Aphid populations, including a widespread pest, Myzus persicae, are known to be affected by cultural practices, plant growth and natural regulation, but their control in orchards most frequently relies on regular treatments aiming to avoid direct damage and virus transmission. This study aimed first at characterising farmers’ management strategies towards aphids and, secondly evaluating them in terms of efficiency and impact on aphid natural enemies from 19 organic and conventional fruit farms in south-eastern France. Comprehensive variables made it possible to differentiate four strategies: intensive, optimised, input-substitution and integrated. The more integrated the strategy, the more diverse and abundant the aphids. The two most effective strategies... |

Peach production in the Rhône-Alps region is increasingly challenged by mediterranean European regions. A possible regional strategy would consist in the development of qualification signs. A significant part of the peach production is already labelled (CCP, Red Label, Organic). How such labels relate with quality attributes at field level ? Can polyphenols be considered as an asset in a re-qualification process of peach production? To contribute to these issues, we present preliminary results derived from field work in Rhône-Alps. The study was conducted on 12 orchards of yellow peach (cv Spring Lady) in farms. 10 orchards were managed according to the above mentioned specifications while 2 were cultivated without specifications. Farmers practices... |

Organic farming (OF) is increasingly considered as a possible alternative for designing a "new rural" in Brazil, where OF covers a wide range of production and certification systems. However, the ways small farmers adopt OF in green belts to meet an urban demand in organic vegetables have not been extensively investigated. Likewise, the impact of such practices on environmental quality components has not been sufficiently documented. Our objective was to relate forms of organisation to environmental assessment in a watershed where organic horticulture significantly contributes to landscape and water quality. We showed how small farmers were organised or how they organised themselves to meet urban demands and develop OF. We assumed that associated practices... |

In spite of the growing demand in green vegetables from three main cities in São Paulo State, smallscale vegetable farmers are still facing economic problems. Subsequently, the maintenance of small farmers and families depending solely on agriculture appears as very difficult. Organic Farming (OF) is increasingly considered as a possible alternative for designing a "new rural" in Brazilian communities (Abreu, 2000). It is seen as an opportunity for economic valuation of horticulture products (root, fruit and leaf vegetables for salads). The existing demand for this type of product, together with favorable green market prices, especially during summertime, would both stimulate and propitiate an expansion in production (Assis, 2002). The consumer of organics... |

Public policies clearly aim at an ecologisation of agriculture. However, few concrete goals or incentives have been established to mobilize the experimental research. Applied to 13-year results of four experimental stations of the South-East of France, the Direct-Indirect-System multi-level analysis grid showed a diversification of their experimental strategies. These three levels of analysis, combined with the identification of different types of agroecosystems, appears as promising for instigating assessment and determining agroecological innovation priorities for an experimental station, a territory or a food chain. |

The overall goal of work package 2, “Identifying research topics for transnational calls”, was to identify research topics for transnational calls within CORE Organic II. This deliverable first provides an overview on the selection and prioritization processes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd call, then presents the research topics initiated under CORE Organic II and finally identifies remaining research gaps. This deliverable refers in several aspects to the deliverables 2.1 and 2.3, finalized earlier. Here we summarize the main experiences to share with other ERA-NETs. Furthermore we provide an update of relevant aspects around research on organic food and farming in the partner countries. Towards the end of CORE Organic II, we made an update of a survey... |

Since organic agriculture is getting legitimate, Brazil has also chosen to be involved, while adopting the legislation n°10.831/2003. As a crossroad between international and domestic rules, we explore (i) the opportunities coming from this text and its application, (ii) the attached production patterns and certification processes, (iii) their socio-economical consequences, and especially for small farming. |

At INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research), the CIAB (Internal Committee of Organic Agriculture) is the main driver of an organic research program. The aim of this paper is to analyze whether these projects comply with the main objectives set out in the program. A database was built with all of the 40 project proposals that were finally approved. The database also made it possible to depict participation in collaborative networks. The analysis highlights four major benefits: (i) Structuring a network of scientific and professional partnerships, (ii) Mobilizing new research teams in the organic program,(iii) Resulting networks and partnerships,(iv) Mobilizing disciplinary or interdisciplinary approaches. We finally draw lessons on the... |

The literature shows that the systems advocating the productivity relatively neglect the ecological services whereas those based on these services, as Organic Farming (OF), are generally less productive. Which balance between these two issues should be found and would contribute to a sustainable agriculture? OF as a value-laden agriculture, whose principles are based on ecology, equity, health and care appears as a candidate for combining performances. In the first section we show results at farm level on environmental and agro-economic performances. In the second section, we underline the challenges facing OF to confirm its prototype’s position. OF as a heterogeneous entity presents different types of trade-offs between the performances. Some performances... |

To help the development of Organic Food and Farming (OFF) systems, there is the need to consolidate conversions to OF, to support entry into organic farming, and to develop existing organic farms. Therefore a group of extensionists, researchers and educators has being working 2 years long to co-design a framework for OFF, taking into account the need to (i) embrace all forms of OFF, and at the same time to (ii) address the specificities of OFF. This project, called REF’AB (REFerentiel de l’Agriculture Biologique, 2010-2012) aims at designing the organization of set of references produced on shared methodological bases. The approach consisted in identifying key-issues of OFF systems, defining indicators, identifying relevant databases and references to feed... |

Sustainable agri-food system approaches are rooted both in the environmental movements and in the political-economic critique of the contemporary system. Organic food and farming (OF&F) as an alternative agri-food system among others encompasses multiple dimensions and performances, enabling the study of conversion as a prototype of transition. We use the multilevel pathways framework to describe the transition process. We first present OF&F as a heterogeneous entity and examine the consequences of acknowledging its diversity. We show that OF&F as an innovation influences the mainstream design of agri-food systems, and we explore the strategies of the actors in charge of its development. We then introduce how different levers can influence... |

No... |
