A new race of Dicrurus from the Island Morotai (N. Moluccas) Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
In preparing a Handlist of the birds of the Moluccan islands, I found among the material in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, a race of Dicrurus that needs description: Dicrurus bracteatus morotaiensis nov. subspec. Diagnosis: Distinguished from atrocaeruleus Gray (1860) — Batjan and Halmahera — by smaller culmen and wing. Habitat: Island Morotai (N. Moluccas). Measurements in mm: ♂♂ culmen: 29; 29; 28.5; 28.5; 30 wing: 150; 148; 147; 152; 149 ♀♀ culmen: 27; 29; 30 wing: 149; 147; 145. For comparison the following measurements are given: Halmahera: ♂♂ culmen: 32; 32; 32; 31; 33; 33; 32; 32 wing: 162; 161; 175; 169; 166; 169; 168; 168 ♀♀ culmen: 32; 34; 33; 31; 31 wing: 160; 165; 168; 162; 162 sex inc. culmen: 32; 32; 31; 33 wing: 159; 167;...

Contribution to the knowledge of the genera Muntiacus and Arctogalidia in the Indo-Australian Archipelago (Mammalia, Cervidae & Viverridae) Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
As I have pointed out before, big game animals are very scarce in Museum collections. Many treatises are based on material from Zoological gardens, changed by captivity and often from unknown origin, from collections of frontlets, skulls and other trophies, bought haphazardly during expeditions which used all their time in thoroughly collecting the more interesting small animals. As a matter of fact, the rare species are better represented than the common ones, and the more a well-known species of game-animal is hunted, the fewer the specimens in the collections of the official Musea. The same is true for our knowledge of the biology of tropical big-game. Rare species, threatened by extinction, are studied with haste and often when it is too late to...

Planning a census of the Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina L.) on the coasts of the Netherlands Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
Scientific research into the occurrence and population density of the Harbour Seal ( Phoca vitulina L.) in the coastal regions of the Netherlands, necessary for any efficacious nature conservancy programme, was started in September 1953 by the author. A reliable calculation of the total number of Harbour Seals in the coastal regions of the Netherlands soon proved to be extremely difficult. Estimations of the number of Harbour Seals occurring in these regions had been made several times before. BROUWER (1927) took the total number of seals in the Netherlands part of the Waddenzee at 1500 and the total number of seals in the estuaries of the provinces of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland at 800. The first number had been arrived at by means of countings in the field,...

De stand van de Ooievaar, Ciconia c. ciconia (Linné), in Nederland in 1955 (The status of the White Stork in the Netherlands in the year 1955) Naturalis
Terlingen, H.; Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
The results of a complete census of the breeding population of the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) in the Netherlands, carried out in the year 1950 by the State Forestry Service, have been published by MÖRZER BRUIJNS and BRAAKSMA in Beaufortia 5, Nr. 45, April 15, 1955, p. 23—42. A new census was performed during the year 1955 ; it is the intention to repeat the census from now on every year. The results of the last census are even more alarming than those from 1950 (see table, p. 113). The number of occupied nests decreased from 83 nests in 1950 to 58 nests in 1955. The number of fledged young decreased from 195 in 1950 to 96 in 1955. Many nests, still occupied in 1950, were either in a state that they could no longer be used or they had vanished altogether...

Contribution to the knowledge of the geographical races of Pongo pygmaeus (Hoppius) Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
Keeping and breeding animals which are threatened with extinction in their natural habitat, should be one of the most important tasks of zoological gardens today. Efforts should be focussed on finding the zootechnical solution of problems which will arise inevitably, especially if rare species, or those that have the reputation of being difficult to keep or to breed, are concerned. The Orang-Utan ( Pongo pygmaeus (Hoppius)) has been kept in Zoos for more than a century. As a matter of fact this species was on exhibition regularly in the Zoos of the Netherlands during the nineteenth century. Orang-Utans were, a hundred years ago, much more common in the Zoological Gardens of Amsterdam and Rotterdam than Chimpanzees. Longevity records however were very poor...

Breeding the Congo Peacock Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
The discovery of the Congo Peacock (Afropavo congensis CHAPIN) is one of the most recent in ornithology. Certainly it is the most famous one. The history of the discovery has been described by CHAPIN in detail (5, 6). The first living specimens exported from Kongo reached the United States June 1949. CHARLES CORDIER told the story of this remarkable transport and of the painstaking work which he undertook to secure these first specimens (7, 8).

Ouderdomsbepaling bij herten van het genus Rusa (voorlopige mededeling) Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.

On the meaning of movable attachment of the incisiviform teeth in Ruminantia Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
In Ruminantia, the roots of the incisiviform teeth in the lower jaw are only partially enclosed in the bony alveolus. Only the lingual part of the alveolus continues in oral direction, the labial part being open at the anterior side, and occupied by fibrous tissue, which is elastic and compact. One look at the skull of a cow, sheep, goat or deer will suffice to convince anybody of the correctness of this statement. Closing its mouth, the animal will press downwards the incisiviform teeth in the lower jaw with the gum pad of the upper jaw, till the lingual side of the crown of the front teeth meets the gum pad. Curiously enough, this mobility of the incisiviform teeth in Ruminantia has never been explained in any handbook on dental anatomy and, in some...

One of the rarest deer of the world Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
The days of big game seem to be numbered. Lists of mammals recently extinct are growing longer and longer and many more species are in danger of extinction. Of course, the last world war has hastened the fate of several species of animals. Eastern Asia and the Pacific region without doubt have suffered most in this respect. For example, the number of Javanese Rhinoceros, Rhinoceros sondaicus DESM., has diminished to such extent that survival seems hardly possible, owing to the aftermath of the Pacific war, which put out of action all painstaking measures of protection. Even before the last war two Asiatic species of deer were on the list of nearly extinct animals, viz. the Milu and Schomburgk’s Deer.

Some remarks on the African wild ass Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
INTRODUCTION Without any doubt the African Wild Ass should be considered a species threatened with extinction. Therefore, it seems worth-while to collect as many data on this species as possible and to do this quickly. Data and material, however, are scarce. Many sportsmen and zoologists observed the animal in natural conditions and hardly any book or paper on the wildlife of regions in which Wild Asses occurred or still can be found, fails to record some observations. However, these observations mostly are more or less incidental. Only during the last years some special studies have been made on the last remnants of the Wild Ass in Ethiopia and Somalia (Simon, 1966, 1968; Blower, 1968; Klingel, 1971a, b), in order to prepare some measures for the...

Supplement to the Faunal List of the Birds of the Moluccan Islands Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van; Voous, K.H..
A faunal list of the birds of the Moluccan Islands has been previously published by the first author (Treubia 19, part 2, May 1948, pp. 323— 402). Additional data have been collected since by Mr. G. A. L. de Haan during a period of several years in which this zealous collector lived in Halmahera and visited the islands Morotai, Ternate and Gebe. It seemed us worth while to publish the species and new localities from the data collected by Mr de Haan, which are not contained in the previous list. We take this opportunity to add some data from literature, published after May 1948 or overlooked by the first author, some data from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, New York, and the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie. Leiden, and to...

De stand van de Ooievaar, Ciconia c. ciconia (Linné), in Nederland in 1956 (The Status of the White Stork in the Netherlands in the Year 1956) Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van; Schuilenburg, H.L.; Zweeres, J.J..
The result is given of a complete census of the breeding population of the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) in the Netherlands, performed during the year 1956. The results of the census of 1950 and 1955 have been published in Beaufortia 5 (45), April 15, 1955: 23—42, and 5 (52), March 24, 1956: 101—115. The result of the census 1956 shows a less alarming picture than that of 1955. The number of nests occupied by pairs increased to 65 (57 in 1955)¹). The number of young fledged increased to 95 (94). However, three newly fledged young perished in the neighbourhood of their nests, so that the ultimate breeding result of the species in 1956 is somewhat less than in 1955. The number of nests on which breeding occurred was higher than in 1955. From 65 (57) nests...

Ir. F.J. Appelman Naturalis
Bemmel, A.C.V. van.

Lüttschwager, Joh.; Bemmel, A.C.V. van.
