Fiber optic monitoring of active faults at the seafloor: I the FOCUS project ArchiMer
Gutscher, Marc-andre; Royer, Jean-yves; Graindorge, David; Murphy, Shane; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Aiken, Chastity; Cattaneo, Antonio; Barreca, Giovanni; Quetel, Lionel; Riccobene, Giorgio; Petersen, Florian; Urlaub, Morelia; Krastel, Sebastian; Gross, Felix; Kopp, Heidrun; Margheriti, Lucia; Beranzoli, Laura.
Laser reflectometry (BOTDR), commonly used for structural health monitoring (bridges, dams, etc.), will for the first time be applied to study movements of an active fault on the seafloor 25 km offshore Catania Sicily. The goal of the European funded FOCUS project (ERC Advanced Grant) is to connect a 6-km long strain cable to the EMSO seafloor observatory in 2100 m water depth. Laser observations will be calibrated by seafloor geodetic instruments and seismological stations. A long-term goal is the development of dual-use telecom cables with industry partners.

Societal need for improved understanding of climate change, anthropogenic impacts, and geo-hazard warning drive development of ocean observatories in European Seas ArchiMer

Society's needs for a network of in situ ocean observing systems cross many areas of earth and marine science. Here we review the science themes that benefit from data supplied from ocean observatories. Understanding from existing studies is fragmented to the extent that it lacks the coherent long-term monitoring needed to address questions at the scales essential to understand climate change and improve geo-hazard early warning. Data sets from the deep sea are particularly rare with long-term data available from only a few locations worldwide. These science areas have impacts on societal health and well-being and our awareness of ocean function in a shifting climate. Substantial efforts are underway to realise a network of open-ocean observatories around...

The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) provides power, communications, sensors, and data infrastructure for continuous, high-resolution, (near-)real-time, interactive ocean observations across a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary range of research areas including biology, geology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science, from polar to subtropical environments, through the water column down to the abyss. Eleven deep-sea and four shallow nodes span from the Arctic through the Atlantic and Mediterranean, to the Black Sea. Coordination among the consortium nodes is being strengthened through the EMSOdev project (H2020), which will produce the EMSO Generic...

Toward a Comprehensive and Integrated Strategy of the European Marine Research Infrastructures for Ocean Observations ArchiMer
Dañobeitia, Juan Jose; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Johannessen, Truls; Basset, Alberto; Cannat, Mathilde; Pfeil, Benjamin Gerrit; Fredella, Maria Incoronata; Materia, Paola; Gourcuff, Claire; Magnifico, Giuseppe; Delory, Eric; Del Rio Fernandez, Joaquin; Rodero, Ivan; Beranzoli, Laura; Nardello, Ilaria; Iudicone, Daniele; Carval, Thierry; Gonzalez Aranda, Juan M.; Petihakis, George; Blandin, Jerome; Kutsch, Werner Leo; Rintala, Janne-markus; Gates, Andrew R.; Favali, Paolo.
Research Infrastructures (RIs) are large-scale facilities encompassing instruments, resources, data and services used by the scientific community to conduct high-level research in their respective fields. The development and integration of marine environmental RIs as European Research Vessel Operators [ERVO] (2020) is the response of the European Commission (EC) to global marine challenges through research, technological development and innovation. These infrastructures (EMSO ERIC, Euro-Argo ERIC, ICOS-ERIC Marine, LifeWatch ERIC, and EMBRC-ERIC) include specialized vessels, fixed-point monitoring systems, Lagrangian floats, test facilities, genomics observatories, bio-sensing, and Virtual Research Environments (VREs), among others. Marine ecosystems are...

ESONET - European Seas Observatory Network. Project Deliverable D45b. 3rd Demonstration Mission Periodic Report ArchiMer
Beranzoli, Laura.
Aim of this document is the reporting of the activities developing over the period June 2009 – December 2009 in the frame of WP4 the ESONET Demonstration Missions (DM, ref. ESONET NoE DoW). In addition, critical aspects for each DM are pointed out and suggestions are give in order to improve the mpact of the DMs work on ESONET and to help in the fully completion of the DM activities and achievements of the results. In this period, the DMs approved in the 1st call (LIDO, LOOME, Marmara-DM, MOMAR-D, Fig.1)) are either at the completion of the first year or in the second year of activity. The DM implementation plans have in general a first work phase which include a significant effort of the partners for the integration/adaptation of the instrumentation and...
