Fluid emissions at the Aquitaine Shelf (Bay of Biscay, France): A biogenic origin or the expression of hydrocarbon leakage? ArchiMer

Fishery acoustic surveys conducted in the Bay of Biscay and dedicated to monitoring and predicting pelagic ecosystem evolution reveal numerous active seeps on the Aquitaine Shelf, east of the shelf break, at water depths ranging from 140 to 185 m. Some acoustic anomalies recorded in the water column with hull-mounted single and multibeam echosounders are clearly caused by fluid escape at the seabed, most likely gases. These fluid emissions are associated at the seafloor with high backscatter subcircular small-scale mounds, on average less than 2 m high and a few metres in diameter. The initial objective of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the biomass of small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Sampling has been extended to study the spatial structure and dynamics of the pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey has produced since 2000 long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. Three decades of continuous ocean exploration have led us to identify subsurface fluid related processes as a key phenomenon in marine earth science research. The number of seep areas located on the seafloor has been constantly increasing with the use of multi-scale imagery techniques. Bubble sweep-down occurrence characterization on Research Vessels ArchiMer

Bubble sweep-down on oceanographic vessels generates acoustic perturbations. We propose in this work to characterize the sub-surface bubbles occurrence conditions from acoustic data analysis acquired during surveys in relatively shallow water with the IFREMER research vessels Thalassa and Pourquoi Pas?. The methodology of data analysis used in this work allows us to characterize the sailing conditions influence on bubble sweep-down occurrence. The correlation between sailing conditions and acoustic perturbations tends to demonstrate that the presence of bubbles under the hull is clearly related to the wind speed and natural aeration, and that surface bubbles are advected differently in the water column by the two vessels

Backscatter calibration of high-frequency multibeam echosounder using a reference single-beam system, on natural seafloor ArchiMer

The calibration of multibeam echosounders for backscatter measurements can be conducted efficiently and accurately using data from surveys over a reference natural area, implying appropriate measurements of the local absolute values of backscatter. Such a shallow area (20-m mean depth) has been defined and qualified in the Bay of Brest (France), and chosen as a reference area for multibeam systems operating at 200 and 300 kHz. Spatial Statistics of Objects in 3-D Sonar Images: Application to Fisheries Acoustics ArchiMer

In this letter, we address the characterization of objects in 3-D sonar images of the water column obtained by a multibeam echo sounder. Compared with classic 2-D images from a monobeam echo sounder, these 3-D images provide finer scale observation of the pelagic biomasses and new tools to characterize 3-D distributions. By viewing object patterns as realizations of spatial point processes, we investigate descriptive spatial statistics. This method is then applied to 3-D fisheries acoustics data set for characterization of the distribution of pelagic fish schools. Analysis of calibrated seafloor backscatter for habitat classification methodology and case study of 158 spots in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea ArchiMer

An automated signal-based method was developed in order to analyse the seafloor backscatter data logged by calibrated multibeam echosounder. The processing consists first in the clustering of each survey sub-area into a small number of homogeneous sediment types, based on the backscatter average level at one or several incidence angles. Methodological developments for improved bottom detection with the ME70 multibeam echosounder ArchiMer

Multibeam echosounders and sonars are increasingly used in fisheries acoustics for abundance estimation. Because of reduced side-lobe levels in the beam-array pattern, the new Simrad ME70 multibeam echosounder installed on board Ifremer's RV "Thalassa" has been designed to allow improved detection of fish close to the seabed. To achieve this objective, precise and unambiguous detection of the water-bottom interface is required, which raises the issue of bottom detection, especially in the outer beams. The new fisheries multibeam echosounder ME70: description and expected contribution to fisheries research ArchiMer

Recently, Simrad in collaboration with Ifremer developed a calibrated, multibeam, vertical echosounder (ME70) for fisheries research. We describe its capabilities and technical limitations. The ME70 has up to 45 beams with distinct frequencies in the range 70120 kHz, spanning at most 150 degrees. All beams are stabilized in vessel roll and pitch. It has reduced side-lobe levels, up to -70 dB (two-way) instead of the -2S dB (one-way) of conventional systems.
