Soil chemical properties were correlated with microbial biomass and its activity. Different correlations were found at the beginning of the first and second cycles, respectively. Soil samples were grouped with respect to the different climate zones. The main variables that separated the countries were organic Carbon, total Nitrogen, pH and clay content. |

Couch grass (Elymus repens) has large impact on yield and management strategies in temperate areas of the world. The control is to a large extent based on repeated soil cultivations in organic farming. Our aim was to investigate methods to improve the competitive effect of white clover by management. The hypothesis was that cutting (fragmentation) of the rhizomes by making slits in the soil by a spade (spading) would increase the number of couch grass shoots, thus improve the effect of repeated mowing. We conclude that Cross cutting to 10 cm could reduce the amount of rhizomes, but that the effect is variable. We also conclude that the cross cutting do not improve the effect of mowing. Cross cutting reduce the amounts of couch grass shoots. |

The legume content in short rotation mixed leys is generally larger in organic production than in conventional, because application of mineral nitrogen favours grasses in competition with legumes. A large proportion of white clover in the diet of ruminants may cause problems with bloat. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of grass varieties or combinations of varieties on clover percentage and ley yield. Different varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Festulolium (Festulolium braunii Richt.) were compared in mixed swards with white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in a field experiment in east-central (Uppsala) and south-west Sweden (Rådde). The clover DM proportion of total yield was usually more than 50% at Rådde, but generally... |
