A lectotype is selected — and its skull figured, for the first time — for Dobsonia pannietensis (De Vis, 1905), which is considered to be a good species. Specimens have been examined from the Louisiades, the D’Entrecasteaux Group, Trobriand Island and Woodlark Island. The species varies per island or island group in dimensions and/or proportions. The skull of the holotype of Dobsonia remota Cabrera, 1920, is figured — also for the first time. The possible synonymy of this species with D. pannietensis is discussed. The holotype, from Trobriand, is still the only known specimen. Specimens from Bougainville, Solomon Islands, referred to remota by McKean (1972), are in fact juvenile Dobsonia inermis Andersen, 1909. |

The genera Scotonycteris Matschie, 1894, Casinycteris Thomas, 1910, Pteropus Brisson, 1762 and Eidolon Rafinesque, 1815 are characterized. An effort is made to assess the possible relationship between the genera Scotonycteris and Casinycteris. Within Scotonycteris zenkeri Matschie, 1894 a number of geographically disjunct or probably disjunct and morphologically distinct population groups are recognized. The available material of Scotonycteris ophiodon Pohle, 1943 suggests that this species may also consist of a number of geographically disjunct and possibly morphologically distinguishable groups. Its distribution shadows that of S. zenkeri. The genus Casinycteris and the nature and function of its peculiarly shortened bony palate are discussed, in... |

Five species of bats are recorded from Kasungu National Park, Malawi: Eidolon helvum (Kerr, 1792); Epomophorus anurus Heuglin, 1864; Epomophorus minor Dobson, 1880; Epomops dobsonii (Bocage, 1889); and Scotoecus hindei Thomas, 1901. Some other Malawian records of these species, based on literature and specimens in collections, have been included. Epomophorus anurus, Epomops dobsonii and Scotoeous hindei are recorded from Malawi for the first time. |

The concept of the genus Rousettus Gray, 1821 as established by Andersen (1912) is revised to accommodate R. madagascariensis Grandidier, 1929, R. obliviosus Kock, 1978 and R. spinalatus Bergmans & Hill, 1980, and to reflect the following mutations. Following Bergmans et al. (1988), the genus Boneia, Jentink, 1879 is treated as a synonym of Rousettus, which adds to that genus the species B. bidens Jentink, 1879. The subgenus Stenonycteris Andersen, 1912 is considered a synonym of Rousettus, and the subgenus Lissonycteris Andersen, 1912 a full genus, to be reviewed in the next part of this series. All African Rousettus species are characterized and their distributions, including many new records, and geographical variation are analyzed. Following... |

This is the last part in a series comprising all Megachiroptera known from mainland Africa and its islands. The concept of the genus Lissonycteris Andersen, 1912 is reviewed and adapted. For the first time, its differential characters vis-à-vis the genera Rousettus Gray, 1821, and Myonycteris Matschie, 1899 as described in the literature have been checked against material of all the species involved. As a consequence, a number of these characters are considered of no taxonomic value and have not been retained, while some new differential characters are described. Lissonycteris and Myonycteris are considered different from Rousettus on generic level, while Lissonycteris and Myonycteris are more closely related to one another than each of these to Rousettus.... |

Dobsonia minor (Dobson, 1879) and D. magna Thomas, 1905 are recorded from Yapen Island for the first time. D. beauforti Bergmans, 1975 is recorded from Biak and Owii Islands; hitherto, it was known from Waigeo only. Dobsonia emersa n. sp. is described from Biak and Owii Islands. A possibly related taxon is reported from Numfoor Island. The taxonomy of Dobsonia species belonging to the moluccensis group sensu Andersen, 1909 is briefly discussed. |

Hitherto unreported australasian Pteropodinae and Nyctimeninae from the collections of the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam and some important samples of Nyctimeninae from the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (formerly: Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie) in Leiden are reported and discussed. The published first occurrence of Pteropus vampyrus on Krakatau Islands after the last eruption is preceded by a specimen found there eight years earlier. The fruit bat material collected on Buru Island by L.J. Toxopeus in 1921-1922, as far as deposited in Amsterdam, is reported for the first time. New localities are reported for Pteropus griseus griseus, P. personatus, P. tonganus geddiei, P. caniceps, Macroglossus minimus nanus, Syconycteris australis papuana,... |

This first part of a revision of African fruit bats contains a short general Introduction and a section Materials and Methods, both pertaining to all parts — as are the first remarks under Results —, and a study of the genus Epomophorus Bennett, 1836. Prior important descriptions of Epomophorus are reviewed and current concepts of the generic characters relative rostrum length; relative palatal length; depression of postdental palate; palatal ridge pattern; and sexual dimorphism are modified. Of all problematical taxa within the genus type specimens have been examined. The following six species are retained: Epomophorus angolensis Gray, 1870; E. gambianus (Ogilby, 1835); E. grandis (Sanborn, 1950); E. labiatus (Temminck, 1837); E. minor Dobson, 1880; E.... |

The genera Micropteropus Matschie, 1899, Epomops Gray, 1870, Hypsignathus H. Allen, 1861, Nanonycteris Matschie, 1899 and Plerotes Andersen, 1910 and the species assigned to them are reviewed. All the currently recognized taxa are maintained except subspecific partitions in Epomops franqueti (Tomes, 1860). The known characters are reviewed and discussed, and new characters presented, and their possible taxonomical implications mentioned. Of the skull characters traditionally used to distinguish Micropteropus from Epomophorus Bennett, 1836 relative rostrum length, relative zygomatic width and the form of the postdental palate are found to be rather in line with the tendencies in that genus. The palatal ridges in both species of Micropteropus are less... |
