Modelling (partly) cohesive sediment transport in sewer systems OMA
Berlamont, J.; Torfs, H..
Although the basic mechanisms of sediment transport in sewers are the same as in rivers, it is not necessarily appropriate to use the many mode1s that have been developed for sediment transport in rivers also in sewers. Different reasons are: 1) sewer sediments are often mixtures of cohesive and non cohesive material, and the bed is often stratified: 2) due to consolidation of the (partly cohesive) bed material, the erosion resistance of the bed may vary with time; 3) the flow conditions in sewers are usually unsteady, which is not accounted for in the classical sediment transport mode1s; 4) existing models have been derived from experiments in rectangu1ar flumes: the results are not directly applicable to sewers with circular cross section where the...

Tidal flow simulation in the English Channel and southern North Sea OMA
Yu, C.S.; Fettweis, M.; Hermans, I.; Berlamont, J..
This paper presents the results of the II Tidal Flow Forum experiment of the English Channel and the southern North Sea. The model applies the FADI (falsified alternating direction implicit) scheme and uses the data base of the Tidal Forum. Discrepancies between the model results and the distributed field data of 11 tide stations and 8 tidal current measurement points are shown graphically and are quantified by calculating the RMS (root mean square) errors and the standard deviations. Sensitivity tests have been carried out by changing some parameters (frictions, Coriolis, ...). The results which best fit the reference data were obtained by using the Manning's friction law. By doing so, the model can more appropriately adapt the complex bathymetry.

The characterisation of cohesive sediment properties OMA
Berlamont, J.; Ockenden, M.; Toorman, E.; Winterwerp, J.C..
This paper describes apparatus, techniques and methods used by participants in MAST G6M project 4 (Cohesive Sediments) for determining cohesive sediment properties. This comparison of methods aims to stimulate a more general discussion on standardisation of techniques which will lead to characterisation of muds in terms of physical parameters. Such characterisation would allow intercomparison of muds from different sources. Methods are given for sediment properties of grain size distribution, settling velocity and rheological parameters and for water-bed exchange properties of permeability, effective stress and critical shear stress for erosion and deposition. Accuracy and repeatability are discussed. A typical range of values is indicated for each of...

Bottom friction dissipation in the Belgian coastal regions OMA
Luo, W.; Monbaliu, J.; Berlamont, J..
The effect of bottom friction dissipation and of the different formulations used for this term on the wave evolution has been investigated in the Belgian coastal regions. Two eddy viscosity models for the bottom friction dissipation, the Madsen et al. (1988) model and Weber's (1991 a) model have been implemented in the Cycle 4 version of the third generation WAM model (Gunther et al., 1992). The wave conditions for the area of the southern North Sea were hindcasted for the February 1993 storm. The results are compared with buoy data. It is found that the net effect of bottom friction dissipation on the significant wave height hindcast is quite big, in the order of 80% (of the wave height when the bottom friction dissipation is taken into account) along the...

Future observational and modelling needs identified on the basis of the existing shelf data OMA
Berlamont, J.; Radach, G.; Becker, G.; Colijn, F.; Gekeler, J.; Laane, R.W.P.M.; Monbaliu, J.; Prandle, D.; Sündermann, J.; Van Raaphorst, W.; Yu, C.S..
NOWESP has compiled a vast quantity of existing data from the North-West European Shelf. Such a focused task is without precedence. It is now highly recommended that one, or a few national and international data centres or agencies should be chosen and properly supported by the EU, where all available observational data, including the NOWESP data, are collected, stored, regularly updated by the providers of the data, and made available to the researchers. International agreement must be reached on the quality control procedures and quality standards for data to be stored in these data bases. Proper arrangements should be made to preserve the economic value of the data for their "owners" without compromising use of the data by researchers or duplicating...

Pumping fluid mud: theoretical and experimental considerations OMA
Berlamont, J..
In many cases maintenance dredging in harbors and access channels could be much cheaper and easier if the deposited mud could be pumped using fixed equipment. Therefore the feasibility of pumping fluid mud was examined. It is found that homogeneous mud can be pumped efficiently up to densities of 1150 kgm-3 (for the Zeebrugge (Belgium) mud). For higher densities the influence radius of the pumps becomes very small. A 1-D model can be used to determine the static equilibrium slope and the equilibrium profile of the mud-water interface. Layered mud deposits are more difficult to remove by pumping, since after each pumping cycle a layer of mud remains. As a consequence, layered mud deposits must be homogenized before pumping. This can...
