What Determines Vertical Mergers in U.S. Food Manufacturing Industries? AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib.
Vertical mergers have become an important business strategy among food manufacturers because it allows them to manage and customize their production according to consumer needs. Economic theories have shown that vertical mergers may be induced by transaction costs, demand variability, and other factors. Using an input-output methodology, a measure of vertical merger is developed for U.S. food manufacturing industries and the transaction cost hypotheses tested in an attempt to examine the factors that motivate vertical mergers in the food manufacturing industries. The results are consistent with previous studies that confirm the role of transaction cost factors, such as lock-in effects in terms of asset specificity and managerial diseconomies.

DETERMINANTS OF FOOD AWAY FROM HOME AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICANS AgEcon
Pert, Calvert; Bhuyan, Sanjib.
The prominence of FAFH on consumers’ food expenditure raises some important questions, particularly those related to the health impact of such a trend. This is particularly true among African-Americans because on average African Americans are twice as likely as white Americans to develop Type 2 diabetes, which has been known to have some correlation with one’s diet. There is a plethora of studies focusing on FAFH by American consumers. However, there are very few studies that focus exclusively on African-Americans. This study tries to fill that gap.

An Examination of Characteristics and Determinants of Success of Cooperatives in the Non-Agricultural Sectors AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Cooperative, a term commonly associated with farmers and the agricultural sector, is also prevalent in a variety of private, non-agricultural sectors. Cooperation among private businesses or public entities has led to cost sharing and more efficiency. However, not all cooperative ventures have been successful. Knowing and understanding what economic, organizational, financial, and operational factors help some cooperatives to succeed could enhance the ability of community leaders and businesses to use the cooperative model to their advantage. With such a goal in mind, this study examines the characteristics of a nationwide sample of cooperative businesses in a variety of non-agricultural sectors and develops a “probability of success” model.

Forward Integration by Farmer Cooperatives: Comparative Incentives and Impacts AgEcon
Royer, Jeffrey S.; Bhuyan, Sanjib.
A model of a three-stage vertical market structure consisting of agricultural producers. an assembler, and a processor is developed to analyze the market incentives farmer cooperatives may have for integrating forward into processing activities and to evaluate the comparative impacts of cooperative forward integration on producers and consumers. Although forward integration by cooperatives generally provides benefits to both producers and consumers under fixed-proportions processing technology and constant assembly and processing costs. the existence of an integration incentive appears to depend upon the ability of the cooperative to restrict the raw product output of its producers to optimal levels.

POTENTIAL ROLE OF NON-AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT: A REPORT ON FOCUS GROUP STUDIES CONDUCTED IN RURAL NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Olson, Frayne E..
Focus group discussions were conducted in April 1997 in two rural North Dakota counties to examine whether the problem of inadequate or missing goods and services in those areas can be solved by using the cooperative business approach. An earlier study (Bhuyan, 1996a) has shown that many rural North Dakota communities lack essential goods and services, such as supermarket or grocery stores, clothing stores, drug stores, bank/credit facilities, and ambulance or fire-services. Focus group participants corroborated those earlier findings at the local level. It was also found that the rural residents were not fully aware of the potential role of cooperatives in the non-agricultural sectors as a means to provide inadequate or missing goods and services....

IMPACT OF BRAND ADVERTISING ON FOOD CONSUMED AWAY FROM HOME AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib.
As consumption of food away from home increases, competition for consumers' dollar is intensifying among the major restaurant brands. This study examines the impact of brand advertising on consumers' choice of food away from home. Study results are in concert with our common sense regarding consumer FAFH behavior.

The Demand for Food Away from Home: Do Other Preferences Compete with Our Desire to Eat Healthfully? AgEcon
Stewart, Hayden; Blisard, Noel; Jolliffe, Dean; Bhuyan, Sanjib.
Health-oriented government agencies have had limited success at encouraging Americans to eat a healthful diet. One reason may be that other preferences compete with our desire to eat healthfully. We explore the effect of consumer preferences on the demand for food away from home, including frequency of eating out and choice of outlet type. Preferences for convenience and ambience are found to influence behavior. Furthermore, omitting these variables from econometric models can bias the estimated effect of preferences for a healthful diet.

WHAT DETERMINES WELFARE LOSSES FROM OLIGOPOLY POWER IN THE FOOD AND TOBACCO INDUSTRIES? AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Lopez, Rigoberto A..
This paper estimates welfare losses in thirty-eight U.S. food and tobacco industries at the four-digit SIC level, then relates such losses to market structure and conduct variables to identify the welfare loss determinants. Empirical findings indicate that these losses are higher in markets characterized by high export intensity, high advertising expenditures, economies of scale, mergers and acquisitions, and market concentration. In addition, losses are larger in industries that sell finished consumer products and face lower import competition.

Formula Price Contracts as an Alternative to Forward Integration by Farmer Cooperatives AgEcon
Royer, Jeffrey S.; Bhuyan, Sanjib.
Firms may seek contractual alternatives to vertical integration in order to achieve transactional economies or adjust for market imperfections. Blair and Kaserman have shown that under fixed-proportions production technology. Firms within bilateral and successive monopoly market structures can use formula price contracts to achieve results economically equivalent to integration. This paper examines whether formula price contracts are a viable alternative to forward integration for farmer cooperatives. Analysis of a three-stage vertical market structure indicates that the conditions under which a cooperative assembler can use a formula price contract are more restrictive than those for an investor-owned firm.

WELFARE LOSSES UNDER ALTERNATIVE OLIGOPOLY REGIMES: THE U.S. FOOD AND TOBACCO MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Lopez, Rigoberto A..
This article systematically estimates the allocative efficiency losses in the U.S. food and tobacco manufacturing industries under alternative oligopoly pricing regimes using a formal model of oligopoly. Using 1987 data for 44 industries and an industry-wide oligopoly pricing scheme, these losses were estimated at approximately 3% of sales--2% in the food industries and 19% in the tobacco industries. Five additional oligopoly pricing regimes, four of which are price leaderships, are simulated and their results compared and tested relative to the industry-wide pricing regime. Findings underscore the importance of cost structure assumptions and that the impact of the type of oligopoly behavior assumed is not as dramatic when differences in demand and cost...

NON-AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES IN THE UNITED STATES: ROLES, DIFFICULTIES, AND PROSPECTS AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib; Leistritz, F. Larry; Cobia, David W..
A wide variety of cooperatives outside the agricultural sector have been playing an important role in the nation's rural and urban areas by providing housing for the elderly and poor, affordable health care, child care, and education. These firms may constitute both business models that reduce the cost of operating a business and effective community development models that forge cooperation among local government and communities. However, limited information is available about how these non-agricultural cooperatives operate, how they were formed, or what are their problems or difficulties as non-traditional cooperatives. This study of 162 randomly selected non-agricultural cooperatives across the United States attempts to answer these questions and...

IMPACT OF VERTICAL MERGERS ON FOOD INDUSTRY PROFITABILITY: AN EMPIRICAL EVALUATION AgEcon
Bhuyan, Sanjib.
Vertical integration is an important business strategy among firms in the U.S. food industries. Our objective is to test one of the perceived benefits of vertical integration - improved profitability of the integrated firm. Findings show that increased vertical mergers in food industries would lower profits.

THE DEMAND FOR FOOD AWAY FROM HOME: FULL-SERVICE OR FAST FOOD? AgEcon
Stewart, Hayden; Blisard, Noel; Bhuyan, Sanjib; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
Consumer spending at full-service and fast food restaurants will continue to grow over the remainder of this decade and the next. However, the larger increase is predicted to occur at full-service restaurants. Simulations assuming modest growth in household income plus expected demographic developments show that per capita spending could rise by 18 percent at full-service restaurants and by 6 percent for fast food between 2000 and 2020. The assumed assumed increase in income alone causes such spending to rise by almost 15 percent and 7 percent at full-service and fast food restaurants, respectively. The increasing proportion of households containing a single person or multiple adults without live-at-home children will cause per person spending to rise by...

MARKET STRUCTURE AND INNOVATION IN AG-BIOTECHNOLOGY AgEcon
Pray, Carl E.; Bhuyan, Sanjib; Hossain, Ferdaus; Naseem, Anwar.
The objective of this paper is to make a contribution to a debated issue in industrial organization that of the relationship between market structure and innovation. We place this topic within a theoretical framework and in the context of the agricultural biotechnology research market. Our theoretical model addresses how firm R&D decisions are affected by upstream and downstream market structures, farmer adoption decisions, and patent strength.
