ABSTRACT: Preservation and use of spermatozoa that have been recovered after death can extend the use of genetically superior animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the maximum period for which ovine spermatozoa could be successfully stored in refrigerated dilution medium post-mortem, with or without added seminal plasma. Three samples of spermatozoa collected in an artificial vagina from 10 rams, or from the tails of four epididymes from the same rams at the time of death (G0) and six (G6), twelve (G12), twenty-four (G24) and forty-eight (G48) hours after death were used. After recovery, the spermatozoa were refrigerated at 5°C in either control medium (CM) or control medium plus 20%homologous seminal plasma (SP) and evaluated for 72 hours... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of follicular development in ewes following ablation of all follicles associated with ovarian superstimulatory treatment. After confirmation of reproductive cyclicity using ultrasonography and progesterone levels, five adult ewes of undetermined breed received a vaginal pessary containing 60mg of medroxyprogesterone, maintained for 10 days, with the application of 100μg cloprostenol on the fourth day. On the tenth day, 300UI equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) was applied together with 80mg FSH, and all visible follicles were aspirated by laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU). Following LOPU, ovarian structures were assessed using sonography every 8 hours for a period of 64 hours, and the number and... |

The efficacy of estrus synchronization using short-term protocol was evaluated by ultrasound exams in Suffolk ewes during the pre-breeding season. The control Group (n = 12) was synchronized by treatment for 12 days with vaginal sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate, and 400 IU eCG at sponge withdrawal. Experimental groups I, II and III kept the sponge in place for 4 days, and 100 µg of PGF2a was administered at sponge withdrawal. Additionally, Group I (n = 12) had 0.1 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) administered during sponge placement and 50 µg of GnRH 48 hours after sponge removal. Group II (n = 6) had 35 mg of progesterone (P4) injected, and 0.1 mg of EB administered during sponge placement, 400 IU eCG at withdrawal and 48 hours after, 50... |
