Organic dairy farming and sustainability Organic Eprints

The main cornerstones for enhancing the credibility of the organic dairy sector are: a) to realize an efficient roughage-based production, which requires significantly less inputs from arable land than conventional systems without producing more GHG emissions per unit of products as a whole; b) to enhance dairy cows’ health and welfare, indicated by a clearly improved longevity; and c) to develop the right matches between local conditions (in particular available feed sources) and cow genotypes, in order to achieve functioning systems with the lowest possible need for external nutrient sources.

Weidegang und Genetik beeinflussen die Milchqualität Organic Eprints

Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes LowlnputBreeds wurden Milchproben von 38 Schweizer Braunviehbetrieben aus der Sommerfütterung auf ihre Fettsäurezusammensetzung untersucht. Die Auswertungen zeigten, dass BS-Genetik keinen gesicherten Einfluss auf Milchleistung, Fett-, Protein- oder Zellzahlgehalt hatte.

To investigate the effect of two dosages of an orally hydro-ethanolic Echinacea purpurea (L.) MOENCH spissum extract (EP) on performance, clinical health, antibody production, red and white blood cell count and expression of immunological parameters in calves, a double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial has been performed.

Two different methods to reveal body condition scores (BCS), called independent BCS (iBCS) and dependent BCS (dBCS; similar to the method of Ferguson et al. 1994), were applied in 1111 Swiss Brown dairy cows. Ultrasound measurement of the back fat thickness (BFT) served as validation method. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of assessor’s subjective impression of the overall appearance of the cow on the scoring process. With 67.3% of the BFT variance, the dBCS with its consideration of the overall impression of the cow and its more open approach was more suitable to predict the subcutaneous fat appositions. Einfluss von Diäten aus konventioneller und biologischer Erzeugung auf Fruchtbarkeitsparameter bei Kaninchen Organic Eprints

In order to test the effect of organic vs. conventional diets on fertility traits, we conducted an on-farm study with female rabbits. Eight groups of seven to eight female rabbits kept in systems with litter were fed ad libitum with either organic or conventional pellets. Offspring was weaned with approx. 28 days. In the first series analysed, the conception rate was higher in the conventional groups. Diet type had no significant influence on that trait. Nevertheless, a significant influence of diet on litter size was found: organically fed female rabbits produced more offspring per litter. Impact of US Brown Swiss genetics on milk quality from low-input herds in Switzerland: Interactions with season Organic Eprints

This study investigated the effect of, and interactions between, US Brown Swiss (BS) genetics and season on milk yield, basic composition and fatty acid profiles, from cows on low-input farms in Switzerland. Milk samples (n = 1,976) were collected from 1,220 crossbreed cows with differing proportions of BS, Braunvieh and Original Braunvieh genetics on 40 farms during winter-housing and summer-grazing. Cows with more BS genetics produced more milk in winter but not in summer, possibly because of underfeeding potentially high-yielding cows on low-input pasture-based diets. Möglichkeiten der genomischen Selektion für neue funktionale Merkmale Organic Eprints

Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, genetische Parameter für neue funktionale Merkmale beim Schweizer Braunvieh zu schätzen. Für Melkgeschwindigkeit und Verhaltensmerkmale wurden insgesamt hohe Heritabilitäten geschätzt, obwohl diskrete, subjektive Skalen Anwendung fanden. Der Grund dafür liegt in der gewissenhaften Anwendung dieser Skalen durch die Landwirte. Eine exakte Messung der Eutertiefe in cm über dem Sprunggelenk führte ebenfalls zu einer beachtlichen Heritabilität. Daraus ergeben sich hohe Genauigkeiten der konventionellen Zuchtwerte phänotypisierter Kühen. Dieses bringt große Vorteile bei der Verwendung gemischter Trainingssets aus nachkommen geprüften Bullen und phänotypisierten Kühen in der genomischen Selektion.

Production level, fertility, health traits, and longevity in local and commercial dairy breeds under organic production conditions in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and Sweden Organic Eprints

Our aim was to map the performance of local (native) dairy cattle breeds in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and Sweden with regard to production, fertility, longevity, and health-associated traits and to compare them with commercial (modern) breeds. For this purpose, we analyzed test-day records (July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2014) and treatment records (Austria, Sweden) of cows managed on organic farms. Der biologische Landbau ist weltweit ein Wachstumsmarkt. Die Länder Süd- und Osteuropas haben ein gutes Potential für ein Wachstum im Biosektors. Ein wichtiger Einflussfaktor hierbei ist das Vorhandensein des nötigen Fachwissens vor Ort. Ziel des hier vorgestellten dreijährigen Projektes war es daher, die Lehre zum biologischen Landbau an den beteiligen Agrarfakultäten in Albanien, Bosnien und Herzegowina, Kosovo, Bulgarien und Ungarn durch die Förderung von Wissenstransfer und die Einführung von e-learning Instrumenten nachhaltig zu verbessern. Vergleich lokaler und kommerzieller Milchviehrassen im Biolandbau Organic Eprints

Die Biolandbau-Richtlinien empfehlen die Verwendung lokal angepasster Nutztierrassen. Es existieren bisher jedoch kaum Studien zur Eignung lokaler Milchviehrassen unter den Bedingungen des Biolandbaus. Lokal angepasste Milchviehrassen könnten besser an die Bedingungen des Biolandbaus angepasst sein als kommerzielle Rassen, da ihre Leistung auf die lokale Futtergrundlage und graslandbasierte Fütterungssysteme abgestimmt ist. Auf dem Poster werden die Ergebnisse des Vergleichs von Braunviehkühen mit einem Brown Swiss Blutanteil von mind. 60% als kommerzielle Rasse mit den zwei lokalen Rassen Original Braunvieh und Grauvieh auf Schweizer Biobetrieben gezeigt.

Im biologischen Landbau spielt das Rind auf Grund seiner Veredelungsfunktion für Grünlandressourcen und auf Grund seines hochwertigen Düngers eine besondere Rolle. Allein in Deutschland werden auf 20%, in der Schweiz gar auf knapp 40% der Biobetriebe Milchkühe gehalten. Wegen ihrer niedrigeren durchschnittlichen Milchleistungen sowie des starken Einsatzes von Grundfutter wird die Umweltwirkung der Bio-Milchrindhaltung aktuell verstärkt kritisch diskutiert. Gesundheits- und Produktionsmerkmale der lokalen Rasse Anglerrind alter Zuchtrichtung und der weit verbreiteten Rasse Holstein auf extensiv wirtschaftenden Biomilchviehbetrieben Organic Eprints

Die lokale Rasse Anglerrind alter Zuchtrichtung (AAZ) wurde in Bezug auf Gesundheit, Fruchtbarkeit und Leistung mit der weitverbreiteten Rasse Holstein (HO) verglichen. Milchleistungsprüfungsdaten vom 1.7.2011 bis 30.6.2015 wurden von 340 AAZ-Kühe auf sieben Biobetrieben mit einer Kontrollgruppe von 690 HO-Kühen auf 13 Betrieben verglichen. Die HO-Betriebe wiesen ein vergleichbar extensives Management auf wie die AAZ-Betriebe, um Umwelteffekte zu minimieren. Der Gesundheits- und Fruchtbarkeitsstatus war für AAZ- und HO-Kühe auf einem ähnlichen Niveau, jedoch zeigten AAZ-Kühe ein geringeres Risiko für subklinische Azidose, hatten tendenziell weniger Euterbehandlungen und wiesen tendenziell eine geringere Güstzeit auf. The accuracy of genomic prediction determines response to selection. It has been hypothesized that accuracy of genomic breeding values can be increased by a higher density of variants. We used imputed whole-genome sequence data and various single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) selection criteria to estimate genomic breeding values in Brown Swiss cattle. The extreme scenarios were 50K SNP chip data and whole-genome sequence data with intermediate scenarios using linkage disequilibrium-pruned whole-genome sequence variants, only variants predicted to be missense, or the top 50K variants from genome-wide association studies. Placebo-controlled study on the effects of oral administration of Allium sativum L in postweaning piglets Organic Eprints

Postweaning diarrhoea (PWD) due to Escherichia coli is an economically important disease in pig production. In this placebo-controlled study performed in Switzerland, the effects of oral supplementation of Allium sativum L. (garlic, AS) on performance (bodyweight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG)) and health (body condition and clinical score) were investigated in postweaning piglets. Piglets (n=600) were randomly assigned to the treatment groups (placebo, AS or colistin) and observed from birth until three weeks postweaning. Stature is affected by many polymorphisms of small effect in humans1. In contrast, variation in dogs, even within breeds, has been suggested to be largely due to variants in a small number of genes2,3. Here we use data from cattle to compare the genetic architecture of stature to those in humans and dogs. We conducted a meta-analysis for stature using 58,265 cattle from 17 populations with 25.4 million imputed whole-genome sequence variants. Results showed that the genetic architecture of stature in cattle is similar to that in humans, as the lead variants in 163 significantly associated genomic regions (P < 5 × 10−8) explained at most 13.8% of the phenotypic variance.
