Larvae for layers

Companies and researchers are in close collaboration developing a container- based system for cultivating fly larvae at organic poultry farms. In a one week process, manure will be converted to compost and the live larvae will be harvested and used for feeding laying hens. The larvae are expected to have a beneficial effect on the growth performance, intestinal health and on animal behavior in flocks.

Reduction of bacterial pathogens in poultry manure by Musca domestica fly larvae

Adult flies are potential carriers of various microbiological pathogens due to their attraction to animal manure. The common house fly (Musca domestica) place their eggs on the surface of fresh manure and the hatched larvae undergoes three larval stages inside. Whether pathogenic microorganism from the manure may colonize the larva gut and ensure transmission to the adult fly is not known as larvae also nourishes on certain bacteria. In this study we monitored the effect of adding M. domestica fly larvae to poultry manure spiked with different test strains (E. coli, S. Enteritidis and C. jejuni), and followed the quantitative changes in manure, larvae and pupae as well as in the adult fly.

Accumulation of Dioxins and PCB in House Fly larvae (Musca domestica) reared in poultry manure and used in feed for organic laying hens

Eggs from free range hens have frequently higher content of dioxins and PCB. As recycling manure may concentrate contaminants in the larvae, we tested whether larvae reared in poultry manure accumulated dioxins and PCB, and if feeding laying hens with these larvae would increase the levels of dioxins and PCB in the hen eggs.

Extended and short abstracts for the conference "Dioxin 2014": A feeding experiment was set up on an organic farm where four groups of layers were used with 37 hens in each. Two groups of hens received a supplement of 15 g larvae per hen per day, while two control groups received only compound feed. The duration of the feeding experiment was two month. Samples of fly larvae, poultry manure, compost and compound feed as well as pooled egg samples from each group were analysed for levels of dioxins and PCB
