Interaction between basement subsidence, eustatic sea-level changes, and varying sediment supply shapes the sediment accumulations along passive continental margins. Detailed analysis of the sediments with seismic stratigraphy and well data permits quantification of the subsidence history and reconstruction of paleoenvironments and sea-level changes through time. Geohistory analysis provides a quantitative analysis of basin subsidence using geologic time-depth diagrams to visualize the total basin subsidence. Long-term eustatic changes are a significant component of the thermo-tectonic subsidence curve. These changes can be quantified by measuring dpearture from an established set of calculated subsidence curves. Short-term, rapid changes of sea level can... |

Since the advent of plate tectonics the active margins of the oceans have been studied according to a model whose basis is a piling up of imbrications of oceanic material units, in front of the upper plate, forming a great tectonic accretionary prism. This model is broadly the same for all the authors; it has been largely used for alpine-type or paleo-oceanic mountain chain, all around the world. The authors have directly taken part in the drillings on western and eastern Pacific active margins (Legs 60 and 67) and they have worked on the tectonics of alpine (paleo-oceanic) chains of the peri-mediterranean, peri-caribbean, and peripacific belts. They compare the geological data acumulated from these tow direct sources. The tectonic constraints constraints... |

Active deformation of the sea-floor of the Hellenic trench has been observed using the Cyana SP-3000 submersible. The strain pattern observed on a scale of a few kilometers is similar to the one deduced from an analysis of Seabeam morphological maps on a scale of tens of kilometers. The overall strain pattern is compatible with subduction of the Mediterranean sea-floor toward the northeast. It is characterized by underthrusting in the Western Ionian branch and left-lateral strike-slip faulting in the Eastern Strabo branch. |
