Le développement durable : un défi pour l'aquaculture marine en Méditerranée ArchiMer
Rey Valette, H; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rene, Francois; Lazard, J; Syndhia, M; Chia, E.
Mediterranean aquaculture production has increased extensively over the past 10 years (25% per year) and now constitutes a credible alternative to fishing. It now has to take the concepts of sustainability into account, placing it in a very challenging and competitive context. The current question is to know whether aquaculture companies can face up to this challenge and what the consequences will be. in order to answer this question, several surveys were carried out in the Mediterranean. They aimed at i) establishing a typology of companies based on their developmental logic, management practices and constraints; and ii) collecting information on the main stakeholders' feelings about sustainable development. These studies confirm that while such companies...

Comparative growth and welfare in rainbow trout reared in recirculating and flow through rearing systems ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The objective of this study was to compare fish performance and welfare at different stocking densities in a recirculating system (RS) and a flow through system (FTS) under field conditions. During the 77 days experiment, the fish survival rate was high (99.3%) and stocking density increased from 57 to 98108 kg m(-3). No significant differences in growth were observed between RS and FTS until day 56. Later, growth decreased in the FTS, while it remained similar to the farm reference at 50 kg m(-3) in the RS. Final weight was 17% higher in RS than in FTS. The maximum carrying capacity of the RS was near 100 kg m(-3), limited by NO2 increase up to safe level at the end of the experiment, the maximum carrying capacity of the FTS was near 85 kg m(-3), probably...

Long-term effects of moderate elevation of oxidation–reduction potential on European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in recirculating aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Li, Xian; Przybyla, Cyrille; Triplet, Sebastien; Liu, Ying; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The long term effects of moderate elevation ORP (oxidation–reduction potential) around 300–320 mV on the growth, hematological parameters and the ability of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to react against bacterial infection was studied in recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs). Two RASs, one with a moderate ozonation (RAS-O3) and a control (RAS-C) were used in this experiment. After 60 days, seabass reared in the RAS-O3 were more able to react against a Vibrio anguillarum infection. It was in spite of the fact that seabass in the RAS-O3 showed decreased feed intake, feed conversion rate, growth rate and modified hematological parameters compared with the fish in RAS-C. It is obvious that an ORP level of 300–320 mV is too high for seabass to...

Production d'Algues unicellulaires ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Audineau, -.
Introduction: Monocellular planktonic algae are autotrophic organisms. They represent the starting point of the food chain and are the first link in primary production. They can be found in high density in a natural environment at Springtime and Fall, times at which temperature and salinity conditions are right for their development and when adequate mineral salts availability is high. This alga production meets bivalve and Penaeid's larva nutritional needs. It also promotes the development of rotifer cultures. Selecting which species to exploit is done according to nutritional value, size, and ease of growing. Algal cell sizes vary between 2 to 100 microns. There are numerous families which are determined according to different criteria: - Nature of the...

Adaptation of aquaculture system typologies to the requirements of sustainable development ArchiMer
Lazard, Jerome; Baruthio, Aurele; Mathe, Syndhia; Rey-valette, Helene; Chia, Eduardo; Aubin, Joel; Clement, Olivier; Morissens, Pierre; Mikolasek, Olivier; Legendre, Marc; Levang, Patrice; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rene, Francois.
The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Use of these categories goes beyond the local typologies and prepares a generic meta-typology classification for the systems. This generic...

The 'new' European fish culture systems: Recirculating systems, offshore cages, integrated systems ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bosc, Pierre; Hussenot, Jerome; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Romain, David.
Over the last few decades, European fish culture was developed mainly as a intensive monospecific activity. In most countries, marine aquaculture cannot continue to develop on the shore line where it first settled due to high competition with other activities. It has now to move either offshore or into recirculation systems located in less occupied spaces. Fresh water availability and impact of fish production farms on the environment are strongly restraining the development of the activity, which is even declining in some countries such as France. Recirculation systems make it possible to decrease water consumption and facilitate waste treatment. Their economical feasibility is being demonstrated and they offer an alternative to developing fish farms....

An integrated fish-plankton aquaculture system in brackish water ArchiMer
Gilles, S.; Fargier, L.; Lazzaro, X.; Baras, E.; De Wilde, Nicolas; Drakides, C.; Amiel, C.; Rispal, B.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous...

The effect of density on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) performance in a tank-based recirculating system ArchiMer
Sammouth, Sophie; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Gasset, Eric; Lemarie, Gilles; Breuil, Gilles; Marino, Giovanna; Coeurdacier, Jean-luc; Fivelstad, Sveinung; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus tabrax) (135 +/- 4 g) were reared under tank-based recirculating aquaculture system for a 63-day period at four densities: 10, 40, 70, 100 kg m(-3). Fish performance, stress indicators (plasma cortisol, proteonemia plus other blood parameters-Na+, K+, glucose, pH, total CO2- and water quality were monitored. At the end of the 63-day period, resistance to infection was also studied by a nodavirus challenge. A 25-day test was performed on fish from two extreme densities (10 and 100 kg m(3)) and one intermediate density (40 kg m(3)). With regards to the different density treatments, there was no significant difference between the daily feed intake (DFI) and the specific growth rate (SGR) up to a density of 70 kg m(-3). No significant...

Vingt ans d’aquaculture en Afrique du Nord : évolutions, bilan critique et avenir ArchiMer
Kara, Mohamed Hichem; Lacroix, Denis; Sadek, Sherif; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rey-valette, Helene; Kraiem, Mejdeddine.
This paper presents the evolution of aquaculture in North Africa during the 20 last years, and the assets and bottlenecks for each country. This work uses the results of the European project Aquamed (2011-2013). The analysis of the evolutions of this sector, including research and development allows to establish a diagnosis on the strengths and the weaknesses in the four countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt). The retrospective analysis helps in identifying solutions for a more sustainable development. It also contributes to select priorities for action in a long-term vision (2035). This double overview, on the past and the future, should help decision-makers and experts to identify the best politics for a sector, which has a high potential in the...

Bilan de la première période d'élevage du silure glane (Silurus glanis) en condition tropicale et en circuit recyclé. (Collaboration Ifremer Palavas/Les Viviers de la Castillonne) ArchiMer
Gasset, Eric; Aubry, J.p.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.

Processing traits of European catfish (Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758) from outdoor flow-through and indoor recycling aquaculture units ArchiMer
Adamek, Z.; Grecu, I.; Metaxa, I.; Sabarich, L.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The quality of fish cultured using recycling units may differ from that of fish from outdoor farming units due to a range of deviating environmental determinants. This applies not only to flesh quality but also to morphological (processing) traits. This study evaluates processing yields of sibling fish cultured in two different farming units: (i) an outdoor pond aquaculture system with a flow-through regime (24.6 ± 0.2°C), and (ii) indoor tanks using a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS; 26.0 ± 1.0°C). Clear differences were observed in the most important processing traits, i.e. skinned trunk and fillet yields, which were both significantly higher (P < 0.01) in RAS fish due to significantly smaller (P < 0.05) head weight in fish of the...

Fish growth and health aspects of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) reared in standard vs. high rate algal pond recirculation systems ArchiMer
Mladineo, Ivona; Bocina, Ivana; Przybyla, Cyrille; Fievet, Julie; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) is the type of land-based aquaculture production that interferes the least with the environment, particularly due to low effluent volume and overall water requirement. Water reuse, sometimes limited by the accumulation of waste products excreted by fish, can be improved by incorporating another biotechnical component in the form of high rate algal pond (RAS+HRAP), thus adding to the economy and self sustainability of the system. Our goal was to evaluate whether rearing fish for 1 year in a RAS or RAS+HRAP led to differences in fish production and health, by assessing: (1) fish growth; (2) impact on the morphological structure of sea bass target tissues (liver, kidney, and spleen); (3) susceptibility to monogenean...

A participatory approach frame to integrated social aspect in LCA: the case of aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Mathe, Syndhia; Aubin, Joel; Wilfart, Aurélie; Rey-valette, Helene; Slembrouck, Jacques; Ediwarman,; Fontaine, Pascal; Tocqueville, Aurélien; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Callier, Myriam.
Identification of relevant social impact indicators for a Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) is still difficult and poorly documented (Jorgensen, et al, 2009). In aquaculture systems, the studies based on social aspects are essentially focused on manpower or on conflicts with other activities . In the PISCEnLit project**, we aim to broaden the vision of social impacts of fish farming systems using a new approach of SLCA. We studied fish farming pond systems in France (Lorraine and Brenne) and Indonesia (Tangkit Baru and Kumpeh Ulu in Sumatra island). In this study, we focused on the choice of the impact categories using the participation of stakeholders (James et al., 2002) by the identification and selection of the relevant social impacts to be assessed....

Towards environmentally sustainable aquaculture: Comparison between two trout farming systems using Life Cycle Assessment ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Aubin, Joel.
Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) was applied to evaluate the global environmental impact of two scenarios of trout production systems based on the operational information from an operational farm using a flow through system (FFF) and an experimental pilot low head recirculating system (RSF) located on the same site. The main differences between the environmental balances of the two systems were relative to water use, eutrophication potential and energy use. Independently of the system used, feed is the key indicator in determining the environmental balance (notwithstanding eutrophication potential and water dependence) monitored by fish production, chemical products, buildings and energy consumption. Consequently, when considering the RSF with a lower feed...
