Different perspectives of consumers on products of organic agriculture were the focus of a project of the social-ecological research program (BMBF). First results based on empirical data show that food quality - as perceived by consumers - does not only refer to classical parameters such as freshness, ingredients or appearance. Rather, perception of food quality seems to be closely related to how consumers feel about their quality of life. Thus, product characteristics are not only derived from their ingredients - but also from information and personal experiences related to production processes, authenticity, and other aspects.

The presented research project deals with the role of organic farms in transferring knowledge. The main thesis is that some organic farms have the potential to support regional processes towards sustainable development by motivating neighbours and consulting or raising awareness of people in the surrounding region. The article gives an overview of a) the parameters that seem to be important for the potential of a farm for transferring knowledge as well as b) the processes of learning and raising aware-ness as described by neighbours.

Struktur der ökologischen Land- und Ernährungswirtschaft in Brandenburg und Berlin. Anknüpfungspunkte für eine nachhaltige Regionalentwicklung Organic Eprints

Die ökologische Land- und Ernährungswirtschaft – also die Erzeugung, Verar-beitung und Vermarktung von Öko-Lebensmitteln – hat sich in Ostdeutschland seit 1990 vom Nullpunkt aus sehr rasch entwickelt. Ein sehr dynamisches Wachstum erlebte der Ökolandbau, während die Verarbeitungs- und Vermark-tungskapazitäten sowie der Konsum von Öko-Lebensmitteln im gesamtdeut-schen Vergleich bisher unterdurchschnittlich sind. Insgesamt ist die Entwick-lung der Öko-Branche in Ostdeutschland eine Erfolgsgeschichte, aber die un-ausgewogene Branchenstruktur hemmt ihre weitere Entfaltung.
