Additional notes on Phoma herbarum Naturalis
Boerema, G.H..
The sporogenesis of Phoma herbarum Westend., and Phoma species in general, is discussed. Additional data are given on the synonymy of P. herbarum and the status of its various infraspecific taxa is revised. Most of the ‘varieties’ and ‘forms’ appear to belong to the ubiquitous species Phoma exigua. Phoma macdonaldii is proposed as a new species and Stagonospora samarorum (Desm.) as a new combination.

New names in Phoma Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Gruyter, J. de; Noordeloos, M.E..
The names of two species of Phoma, discussed in our recent papers (de Gruyter & Noordeloos, 1992 and Noordeloos et al., 1993) appeared to be illegitimate as later homonyms (Art. 64). Therefore the following new names are proposed as avowed substitutes.

Contributions towards a monograph of Phoma (Coelomycetes) — IV. Section Heterospora: Taxa with large sized conidial dimorphs, in vivo sometimes as Stagonosporopsis synanamorphs Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Gruyter, J. de; Noordeloos, M.E..
The new section Heterospora is proposed for Phoma species producing not only relatively small, mainly aseptate conidia, but also distinctly larger conidia, which may become 1- or more septate: ‘ascochytoid-stagonosporoid’. The majority of the conidia are always phomoid in vitro, but in vivo they may be predominantly large and septate, synanamorphs being therefore referred to Stagonosporopsis Died. The heterosporous species are described in vitro, with additional data on the conidial morphology in vivo. An addendum deals with eight species from other sections which display a similar conidial dimorphism. Five new species and four new combinations have been proposed: Phoma actaeae spec. nov., Phoma alectorolophi spec. nov., Phoma nigripycnidia spec. nov.,...

The nomenclature of two fungi parasitizing Brassica Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Kesteren, H.A. van.
The nomenclature of the perfect and imperfect stages of Mycosphaerella brassicicola (Duby) Lind. and Leptosphaeria maculans (Desm.) Ces. & De Not. is discussed. The imperfect stages of these two parasites of Brassica spp. are often confused. Mycosphaerella brassicicola has a spermagonial stage with the characters of the form-genus Asteromella Pass. & Thüm. In phytopathological literature it is incorrectly known as a Phyllosticta species: P. brassicicola McAlp. A new combination for this stage is proposed: Asteromella brassicae (Chev.) Boerema & van Kesteren. The pycnidial stage of L. maculans is known in phytopathological literature as Phoma lingam (Tode ex Fr.) Desm. Its characters, however, are quite different from those of the type-species...

Contributions towards a monograph of Phoma (Coelomycetes) VI — 1. Section Phyllostictoides: Characteristics and nomenclature of its type species Phoma exigua Naturalis
Aa, H.A. van der; Boerema, G.H.; Gruyter, J. de.
A description is given of the morphological characters of Phoma section Phyllostictoides and its taxonomical position is discussed. A key is provided for the varieties of the type species Phoma exigua Desm., followed by a host-fungus and a fungus-host index. Two new varieties are proposed: Phoma exigua var. forsythiae (Sacc.) comb. nov. and Phoma exigua var. noackiana (Allesch.) comb. nov. The synonymy, selected literature, a representative culture and data on ecology and distribution are given for all varieties.

Phoma Piskorzii (Petrak) comb. nov., the anamorph of Leptosphaeria acuta (Fuckel) P. Karst Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Loerakker, W.M..
The pycnidial state of Leptosphaeria acuta appeared to be identical with the lectotype of Diploplenodomus piskorzii, and belongs to Phoma sect. Plenodomus. The binomials Phoma acuta, Leptophoma acuta and Plenodomus acuta are misapplied ambiguous names often referring to the anamorph of Leptosphaeria doliolum sensu stricto.

Contributions towards a monograph of Phoma (Coelomycetes) — VII. Section Sclerophomella: Taxa with thick-walled pseudoparenchymatous pycnidia Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Gruyter, J. de.
This paper deals with ten species of Phoma, characterized by thick-walled pseudoparenchymatous pycnidia. They superficially resemble the thick-walled pycnidial phenotype in species of Phoma sect. Plenodomus, but scleroplectenchyma is lacking and teleomorphs belong to Didymella, not Leptosphaeria. Keys and indices of host-fungus and fungus-host relations are provided and short comments on the ecology and distribution of the taxa are given.

Conidiogenesis and conidial septation as differentiating criteria between Phoma and Ascochyta Naturalis
Boerema, G.H.; Bollen, G.J..
New definitions of the form-genera Phoma Sacc. and Ascochyta Lib., based on developmental criteria, are presented. Phoma species show phialidic ontogeny. The first conidium is produced within a papillate protrusion of the undifferentiated parent cell; after a conidium secedes the basal part of the papilla remains as a collarette on the conidiogenous cell which may show two or three layers corresponding with the layers of the original papilla. The conidia secede by a three-layered septum and are in principle one-celled, although secondary septation may occur, especially in vivo (0-95%). In vitro under normal laboratory conditions the majority of conidia however always remain one-celled. The pycnidia are usually glabrous but also may be hairy or setose....
