Notes on marine fishes from the Netherlands Antilles, with the description of a new species, Eutyx tumidifrons (Brotulidae) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A small number of fishes from the Netherlands Antilles has been collected and recently presented to the Leiden Museum by Dr. J. S. Zaneveld, Head of the Biology Department, College of William and Mary, Norfolk, Va., formerly Director of the Caraibisch Marien Biologisch Instituut, Curaçao; and Dr. L. B. Holthuis, Curator of Carcinology at the Leiden Museum. While most specimens proved to belong to known Caribbean Syngnathidae, one very remarkable specimen appeared to belong to an undescribed species. Syngnathidae Syngnathus dunckeri Metzelaar Syngnathus dunckeri Metzelaar, 1919, p. 28, fig. 9 (Plaja Grandi, Curaçao; lake of Bonaire; harbour of St. Eustatius; St. Martin); —, Longley & Hildebrand, 1941, pp. 56, 59 (Long Key; inside Bird Key reef); —,...

Some remarks on the identity of the Japanese rays Raja Kenojei Müller & Henle, 1841, and Raja Meerdervoortii Bleeker, 1860 Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Rejecting without valid argumentation a lectotype selection for Raja kenojei Müller & Henle, 1841, by the present author (1947), Ishiyama (1967) indicated another of the four Leiden types as such. Both selected specimens are shown to represent only the different sexes of the same species, which is not conspecific with R. kenojei sensu Ishiyama et al. (= ? R. japonica Nyström, 1887) but rather with R. porosa Günther, 1847, as understood by Ishiyama. One of the R. kenojei types is referred to R. meerdervoortii Bleeker, 1860, a distinct species not identical with R. kenojei in either interpretation, and of which R. macrophthalma Ishiyama, 1950, may well prove to be a junior synonym. Müller & Henle's coloured illustration of R. kenojei, made after a...

On Sciadeichthys (Selenaspis) Walrechti, a new South American catfish Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Two large specimens of a hitherto unknown species of neotropical catfish have recently been found dead and washed ashore beneath the dike along the Westerscheldt near Biezelinge, Zeeland, at a mutual distance of approximately 300 meters. Both were in excellent condition and have been presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden by Mr. B. J. J. R. Walrecht. A superficial examination already disclosed the fact that the two specimens belong to the (sub)genus Selenaspis, a well known group of catfishes inhabiting the salt and brackish shores and estuaries of the northern part of the South American continent. Some of the species are known to spawn in fresh water. The present specimens must have been transported by ship. Whether they have been...

Notes on the fishes of western New Guinea III. The fresh water shark of Jamoer lake Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION In 1954, during a visit to Hollandia, western New Guinea, it was rumoured that sharks had been observed in the fresh water of Jamoer Lake, at a distance by effluent river of about 130 km from the Arafoera Sea. For further information on the locality, including a map of the area, I refer to the first note in the present series (Boeseman, 1963: 231, fig. 6). With eagerness we welcomed an opportunity provided by Rear Admiral (at the time Captain) G. B. Fortuyn, then Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Netherlands New Guinea, to pay a short visit to the isolated lake. All necessary facilities, including transportation and maintenance, were kindly furnished by the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service and the Royal Marines. Accompanied by my colleagues...

Notes on South American catfishes, including remarks on Valenciennes And Bleeker types in the Leiden Museum Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
I A recent perusal of Valenciennes' accounts on the nematognathous fishes (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1839, 1840) showed that of the numerous South American species newly described or renamed, eighteen wholly or partly were based on specimens in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. It was surprising to find that most of these specimens are stated to have been sent to Leiden from Cayenne, and only a few from Surinam, for most of the pre-1839 South American catfishes in the Leiden Museum are of Surinam origin and few, if any, from Cayenne. Moreover, an examination of the collection showed that up to recently none of the specimens belonging to the pertinent species bear any indication as to a typical status. On...

Frederik Petrus Koumans, 1905-1977, a biography and a tentative list of his biological papers Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
On Wednesday 27 April 1977, my predecessor as a curator of fishes at the Leiden Museum, Dr. F. P. Koumans, after a short illness, rather unexpectedly passed away at the age of 72. Considering his rôle as a staff member of the Museum and the importance of his contributions to science, the publication of a short biographical note and a list of his publications seems an obligation towards his former colleagues, if not a duty for me as his former pupil. Frederik Petrus Koumans was born on 21 January 1905 in the Hague, where he attended elementary and high school. After his high school examination in 1922, he studied biology at the nearby University of Leiden, where he obtained his masters degree in 1927, and his doctorate in 1931. There is no information...

Some preliminary notes on Surinam Sting Rays, including the description of a new species Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In Dr. D. C. Geijskes' collection of Surinam fishes, mentioned in my previous paper on this subject (Boeseman, 1948), I found six specimens belonging to the so-called "sting rays" (Dasyatidae), representing three different species, and all very interesting in some respects. I. Dasyatis schmardae (Werner). Trygon schmardae Werner, 1904, p. 298 (Jamaica). Dasybatus schmardae, Garman, 1913, p. 386 (after Werner). Dasybatus schmardae, Meek & Hildebrand, 1923, p. 81 (Toro Point & Mindi Cut, Panama Canal). Dasyatis schmardae, Fowler, 1931, p. 391 (Vessigny River at Brighton, Trinidad). Four specimens, from Coppenam Point, Surinam, coll. Dr. D. C. Geijskes, Dec. 1942, 2 ♂ ♂ measuring 530 and 575 mm, 2 ♀ ♀ measuring 610 and 705 mm. The condition of the...

An annotated list of Fishes from the Niger Delta Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
At the end of November 1960, the Leiden Museum received an interesting collection of animals, mostly fishes, from the Niger delta. All specimens were collected by Mr. H. J. G. Beets, at the time employed by Shell B.P. — Delta Investigations, during the period May to August 1960, and in the region between Port Harcourt and Brass. Unfortunately, owing to lack of time, the separate specimens or lots were not labelled, but the collecting localities are limited in number and restricted to only the eastern part of the delta. The fish collection, consisting of 130 specimens, proved to belong to 51 species, some of which gave occasion for a reexamination and comparison of Bleeker and Steindachner types in the Leiden Museum collection. Collecting localities and...

On recent accessions of Surinam fishes Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In 1953, Mr. E. C. Stol, naturalist at Leiden, kindly placed at my disposal a small collection of Surinam freshwater aquarium fishes. A second collection, consisting of freshwater and marine specimens from Surinam, mainly collected by Dr. D. C. Geijskes and Mr. H. W. Lijding (Fishery Department), was received during 1954. As the two collections proved to contain several interesting specimens belonging to species not yet reported from Surinam, the following enumeration is given. To the measurements of specimens with damaged caudal fins the mark is added. Dasyatis guttata (Bl.; Schn.) 1 ex., near lightship Surinam River, 5-8 miles E., 12 January 1954, H. W. Lijding, 412 mm, ♂. Further data: length of disc (to anus) 97 mm; length of tail (from anus) 315 mm;...

The Fresh-water Fishes of the Island of Trinidad Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A few years ago, an interesting collection of fresh-water fishes from Trinidad was presented to the Leiden Museum by Mr. J. S. KENNY, fish culturist of the Trinidad Department of Agriculture. For this gift we are also greatly indebted to Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK of the Zoological Laboratory at Utrecht, who kindly acted as intermediary. Most specimens were collected by Mr. J. L. PRICE, a few by Mr. W. A. KING-WEBSTER or by Mr. KENNY himself; a few more were added by Dr. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK. All examples had already been identified and, evidently, represent part of the material assembled during a survey of the fresh-water fishes of the island, reported upon by PRICE (1955) in a valuable though rather scarce publication. During the usual examination...

Note on the Characid genus Brachychalcinus Boulenger (1892), including the description of a new species Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In a previous paper (1952, p. 190) I reported upon a specimen from the Lucie River, Surinam, doubtlessly belonging to Boulenger's genus Brachychalcinus, but had to abstain from giving a definite specific identification on account of the lack of comparative material, the insufficiency of previous literature, and the obviously juvenile state of the single specimen. A possibility to look once more into this matter, and to amend my previous statement, was brought about by the existence of eight specimens from the same river system, and probably belonging to the same species, in the collections of the Chicago Natural History Museum, and the offer to have these sent to me as a loan. For this courtesy, and for the loan of a single juvenile specimen of...

Dilatys sumatransnus, a new Earwig from Sumatra Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A study of the collection of Dermaptera in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden has been made by the author during the years 1942 and 1943, but publication of the results had to be postponed for several years on account of various difficulties arising during and since the war. These investigations yielded some interesting results, including the descriptions of several new species. It is intended to publish these descriptions in the near future after a study of the literature of the group that has appeared since 1943. Of the subfamily Diplatyinae the material of the Leiden Museum contains specimens of two forms that proved to belong to hitherto undescribed species. Together with other representatives of this subfamily these specimens were sent...

A hidden early source of information on north-eastern Brazilian zoology Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Attention is drawn to some hitherto overlooked paragraphs on the north-eastern Brazilian fauna hid- den in a historiographic account of Count Johan Maurits' govenorship (1637-1644), published by Caspar van Baerle (Barlaeus) in 1647, a year before the publication of Marcgrave & Piso's famous Historia naturalis Brasiliae and based on the same sources.

A short review of the Surinam Loricariinae; with additional information on Surinam Harttiinae, including the description of a new species (Loricariidae, Siluriformes) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION The present paper forms the continuation of a series pretending to cover at least most of the Surinam representatives of loricariid armoured catfishes (for earlier papers, see Boeseman, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1974), but for various reasons it is less extensive in scope than its forerunners. The main reasons are that, (1) it seems unnecessary to repeat the general information provided in the earlier papers, especially since the employed methods, the provided measurements (see fig. 1), and the localities (fig. 2) or habitats are the same, or at least similar (exceptions: measurements and counts up to "caudal base" in fact are up to the end of the last, small scute of the lateral series, while in some of tables, to the total (or axial) length, the...

A preliminary list of Surinam fishes not included in Eigenmann's enumeration of 1912 Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In his valuable report on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, Eigenmann (1912, pp. 64-73) gave a list of the species, together with comparable lists on the freshwater fishes of the adjacent regions. In sharp contrast with the number of 266 species reported from the Essequibo area only, the total amount of Surinam species proved to be but 118! Although since Eigenmann compiled these lists some more species have been reported from Surinam, the general situation has remained essentially the same, clearly showing the backward state of ichthyological research in this area. A possibility to improve our knowledge of this subject came when during the last four years the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received several more or less extensive collections...

Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798) and his contributions to the natural sciences, with emphasis on zoology Naturalis
Boeseman, M.; Ligny, W. de.
After a short characterization of the political and economical developments in 17th-18th century Netherlands and some general remarks on the Houttuyn family and its social status, the ancestry of Martinus Houttuyn is thoroughly established. In the medical thesis he presented at Leiden University in 1749 many interesting facts about his early life and scientific development, hitherto overlooked, were found. The six principal zoological publications of Houttuyn are reviewed and are listed together with many others on a wide diversity of subjects. The esteem he received during his lifetime from compatriots as well as foreign scientists, in contrast to the near oblivion in the 19th-20th century, is demonstrated. We tried to entangle the vicissitudes of his...

Notes on new or rare marine fishes from Surinam Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
The fish collection of the Leiden Museum has recently been enriched by the donation of a few small or moderate collections of fishes assembled in tropical Atlantic America. As these proved to contain some representatives of species rarely encountered or even new to science and, moreover, provided interesting distributional information, publication of a few notes containing the principal data seems of interest. Note I. — A collection of about 40 specimens from Surinam, representing 29 species mostly marine, was received from Ir. Z. Salverda, who appears to have collected them himself. Unfortunately, Ir. Salverda omitted adding more detailed locality information, but all marine species can be expected to occur throughout the whole of the coastal region. Two...

Notes on the fishes of western New Guinea : II. Lophichthys boschmai, a new genus and species from the Arafoera Sea Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
During my visit to western New Guinea (1954-1955), a rich collection of marine animals was presented to the Leiden Museum by the Fisheries Department of the Netherlands New Guinea Government. The specimens, mostly fishes, had been captured during previous trips of the Government fishing vessel "De Goede Hoop", and were preserved on the initiative of Mr. D. C. Zwollo, at the time Director of the Fisheries Department there, to whom we are especially indebted. One of the most intriguing specimens of this fish collection, evidently representing a new genus and probably even new higher categories of fish taxonomy, is discussed here. It is a pleasure to dedicate the present species to Prof. Dr. H. Boschma, who has expertly guided the first steps of so many...
