Notes on marine fishes from the Netherlands Antilles, with the description of a new species, Eutyx tumidifrons (Brotulidae) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A small number of fishes from the Netherlands Antilles has been collected and recently presented to the Leiden Museum by Dr. J. S. Zaneveld, Head of the Biology Department, College of William and Mary, Norfolk, Va., formerly Director of the Caraibisch Marien Biologisch Instituut, Curaçao; and Dr. L. B. Holthuis, Curator of Carcinology at the Leiden Museum. While most specimens proved to belong to known Caribbean Syngnathidae, one very remarkable specimen appeared to belong to an undescribed species. Syngnathidae Syngnathus dunckeri Metzelaar Syngnathus dunckeri Metzelaar, 1919, p. 28, fig. 9 (Plaja Grandi, Curaçao; lake of Bonaire; harbour of St. Eustatius; St. Martin); —, Longley & Hildebrand, 1941, pp. 56, 59 (Long Key; inside Bird Key reef); —,...

The systematic position of the Chinese Fish Macrones Sinensis Bleeker (Siluroidea) Naturalis
Jayaram, K.C.; Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION Fishes of the genus Macrones Duméril (= Mystus Scopoli), family Bagridae, are mainly distributed from Syria in the north-west, through Pakistan, Ceylon, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand and Malaya, to the East Indies. Thirty-eight species have been described in the genus, of which six are reported as occurring in China (Jayaram, 1966: 445). In an earlier communication (Jayaram, 1968: 294) it was surmised that the genus may not be found in China and that the six species described from that country be best left out of Chinese lists, or that they may be placed under the predominantly Chinese genus Pelteobagrus Bleeker. Through the kind courtesy and co-operation of Dr. Volker Mahnert, Geneva, Dr. P. Kähsbauer, Vienna and Dr. M.-L. Bauchot,...

Notes on the fishes of Western New Guinea I Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION In the summer of 1954, I received an invitation from the Netherlands New Guinea Government to undertake a faunistic investigation of the fish fauna of the area. It was thought advisable for the promotion of the local New Guinea fisheries, to first obtain a more thorough knowledge of the fish fauna of the region, based on a collection as complete as could be attained within a reasonable time. As such a collecting trip could be expected to yield results of considerable zoological and zoogeographical importance, I gladly accepted this unique opportunity. A most fortunate circumstance was that my visit coincided with an already previously planned collecting trip to the same area by two of my colleagues, Dr. L. D. Brongersma, at the time...

Scientific results of the Surinam expedition 1948-1949 : Part II. Zoology No. 2. The fishes (I) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
The following pages contain a first report on the fishes collected by Dr. D. C. Geijskes and Mr. P. H. Creutzberg during the recent expedition to Dutch Guiana. A deplorable lack of time caused by the necessity to temporarily divert my attention from the present field of ichthyological research, compels me to publish these results before actually having finished the investigation of this rich and interesting collection. In consequence of this, the present paper concerns a part of the actual material only, and, though it includes in number the major part, a report on specimens belonging to some of the most interesting groups has to be postponed. For convenience' sake, the species recorded in the present paper have been arranged in the same order as used by...

Some preliminary notes on Surinam Sting Rays, including the description of a new species Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In Dr. D. C. Geijskes' collection of Surinam fishes, mentioned in my previous paper on this subject (Boeseman, 1948), I found six specimens belonging to the so-called "sting rays" (Dasyatidae), representing three different species, and all very interesting in some respects. I. Dasyatis schmardae (Werner). Trygon schmardae Werner, 1904, p. 298 (Jamaica). Dasybatus schmardae, Garman, 1913, p. 386 (after Werner). Dasybatus schmardae, Meek & Hildebrand, 1923, p. 81 (Toro Point & Mindi Cut, Panama Canal). Dasyatis schmardae, Fowler, 1931, p. 391 (Vessigny River at Brighton, Trinidad). Four specimens, from Coppenam Point, Surinam, coll. Dr. D. C. Geijskes, Dec. 1942, 2 ♂ ♂ measuring 530 and 575 mm, 2 ♀ ♀ measuring 610 and 705 mm. The condition of the...

Some remarks on the identity of the Japanese rays Raja Kenojei Müller & Henle, 1841, and Raja Meerdervoortii Bleeker, 1860 Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Rejecting without valid argumentation a lectotype selection for Raja kenojei Müller & Henle, 1841, by the present author (1947), Ishiyama (1967) indicated another of the four Leiden types as such. Both selected specimens are shown to represent only the different sexes of the same species, which is not conspecific with R. kenojei sensu Ishiyama et al. (= ? R. japonica Nyström, 1887) but rather with R. porosa Günther, 1847, as understood by Ishiyama. One of the R. kenojei types is referred to R. meerdervoortii Bleeker, 1860, a distinct species not identical with R. kenojei in either interpretation, and of which R. macrophthalma Ishiyama, 1950, may well prove to be a junior synonym. Müller & Henle's coloured illustration of R. kenojei, made after a...

The types of Bleeker's Indo-Pacific Elopoid and Clupeoid Fishes Naturalis
Whitehead, P.J.P.; Boeseman, M.; Wheeler, A.C..
Pieter Bleeker described 72 new species and 10 new genera of elopoid and clupeoid fishes from the Indo-Malayan Archipelago. From amongst the Bleeker material in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden and the British Museum (Natural History) in London, it has been possible to find the holotypes or designate lectotypes or putative neotypes for almost all these species. The types are fully described, with notes on synonymies and affinities. Of the species listed, 24 are considered senior synonyms, and 5 Bleeker genera are accepted.

On a collection of fishes from Stanley Pool (Belgian Congo) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
From Mr. A. Werner, collector and animal dealer at Munich, Germany, the Leiden Museum received a collection of 1012 well preserved specimens of fishes from Stanley Pool (Léopoldville), Belgian Congo. As several species proved to be new for this locality and are not mentioned in Poll's paper on the fishes from Stanley Pool (1939), the following publication was considered worth while. Moreover, a new Synodontid species, Synodontis werneri, is described. In the present report, the various species are recorded in the same order as in Poll's account. The name of the locality, being always the same, is omitted further on. Protopterus dolloi Boulenger 2 ex., January 1956, 76-91 mm. Both specimens are juvenile and have the tail slightly mutilated. Scales in 90-98...

A preliminary list of Surinam fishes not included in Eigenmann's enumeration of 1912 Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In his valuable report on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, Eigenmann (1912, pp. 64-73) gave a list of the species, together with comparable lists on the freshwater fishes of the adjacent regions. In sharp contrast with the number of 266 species reported from the Essequibo area only, the total amount of Surinam species proved to be but 118! Although since Eigenmann compiled these lists some more species have been reported from Surinam, the general situation has remained essentially the same, clearly showing the backward state of ichthyological research in this area. A possibility to improve our knowledge of this subject came when during the last four years the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received several more or less extensive collections...

A hidden early source of information on north-eastern Brazilian zoology Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
Attention is drawn to some hitherto overlooked paragraphs on the north-eastern Brazilian fauna hid- den in a historiographic account of Count Johan Maurits' govenorship (1637-1644), published by Caspar van Baerle (Barlaeus) in 1647, a year before the publication of Marcgrave & Piso's famous Historia naturalis Brasiliae and based on the same sources.

Triodon macropterus versus Triodon bursarius : an attempt to establish the correct name and authorship Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A visit to the Leiden Museum by Professor Dr. L. F. de Beaufort, assembling data for his next volume on the Fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, prompted me to investigate the nomenclatorial difficulties still existing around the Plectognath genus Triodon and its single known species. One of the principal items consulted, Herre's 1953 Check List of Philippine Fishes, itself not without serious flaws and therefore illustrative for the present problem, proved a very satisfactory starting-point, especially as it contains the only recent and rather extensive compilation of previous literature on the subject. Still, Herre's enumeration of references is not at all exhaustive, and numerous additions taken both from systematic literature and from general...

On a collection of East Asian fishes Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A collection of 561 specimens of East Asian freshwater fishes has recently been presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden by Mr. A. Werner, Munich, a well known collector and naturalist. A close examination of the present material provided several interesting data, which are given below, while one sample proved to belong to a species and genus new to science. The localities given by Mr. Werner are : Colombo, Calcutta, Bangkok, and Singapore, but some of the Singapore material seems to have been imported, presumably from Sumatra or Borneo. Kryptopterus bicirrhis (C. V.) 18 ex., Singapore, probably 1956, 38-73 (46-87) mm. Occasionally the name Cryptopterus is still used for the present species. The original name was given by Bleeker...

Notes on the fishes of western New Guinea III. The fresh water shark of Jamoer lake Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION In 1954, during a visit to Hollandia, western New Guinea, it was rumoured that sharks had been observed in the fresh water of Jamoer Lake, at a distance by effluent river of about 130 km from the Arafoera Sea. For further information on the locality, including a map of the area, I refer to the first note in the present series (Boeseman, 1963: 231, fig. 6). With eagerness we welcomed an opportunity provided by Rear Admiral (at the time Captain) G. B. Fortuyn, then Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Netherlands New Guinea, to pay a short visit to the isolated lake. All necessary facilities, including transportation and maintenance, were kindly furnished by the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service and the Royal Marines. Accompanied by my colleagues...

Seventeenth century drawings of Brazilian animals in Leningrad Naturalis
Boeseman, M.; Holthuis, L.B.; Hoogmoed, M.S.; Smeenk, C..
Manuscript pictures of NE. Brazilian animals, related to seventeenth century originals described by Marcgrave and Piso (1648, 1658), validated by Linnaeus (1758-59, 1766-68), are studied and identified, comments are supplied, partly based on much neglected old sources, with evaluations of current interpretations.

De Nederlandse meerval, Silurus glanis Linnaeus Naturalis
Boeseman, M..

Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798) and his contributions to the natural sciences, with emphasis on zoology Naturalis
Boeseman, M.; Ligny, W. de.
After a short characterization of the political and economical developments in 17th-18th century Netherlands and some general remarks on the Houttuyn family and its social status, the ancestry of Martinus Houttuyn is thoroughly established. In the medical thesis he presented at Leiden University in 1749 many interesting facts about his early life and scientific development, hitherto overlooked, were found. The six principal zoological publications of Houttuyn are reviewed and are listed together with many others on a wide diversity of subjects. The esteem he received during his lifetime from compatriots as well as foreign scientists, in contrast to the near oblivion in the 19th-20th century, is demonstrated. We tried to entangle the vicissitudes of his...

On recent accessions of Surinam fishes Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
In 1953, Mr. E. C. Stol, naturalist at Leiden, kindly placed at my disposal a small collection of Surinam freshwater aquarium fishes. A second collection, consisting of freshwater and marine specimens from Surinam, mainly collected by Dr. D. C. Geijskes and Mr. H. W. Lijding (Fishery Department), was received during 1954. As the two collections proved to contain several interesting specimens belonging to species not yet reported from Surinam, the following enumeration is given. To the measurements of specimens with damaged caudal fins the mark is added. Dasyatis guttata (Bl.; Schn.) 1 ex., near lightship Surinam River, 5-8 miles E., 12 January 1954, H. W. Lijding, 412 mm, ♂. Further data: length of disc (to anus) 97 mm; length of tail (from anus) 315 mm;...

Revision of the fishes collected by Burger and Von Siebold in Japan Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION The collections made by Burger and Von Siebold during the second quarter of the previous century, in the neighbourhood of Nagasaki, were so extensive that they gave Temminck & Schlegel the opportunity to build the foundation for the knowledge of the Japanese ichthyofauna. In her publication "'s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie, 1820-1915", Dr. A. Gijzen states: "Burger sent among others fishes"; "25 December 1832 Temminck gives him a list of the desired species of animals." As she further states, Burger's position in Japan is not quite clear; in a letter from 9 November 1839, Temminck writes to the Minister that he knows Burger as a collector only, but that he knows no further particulars about him. Burger's name has been mentioned in...

Notes on the fishes of western New Guinea : II. Lophichthys boschmai, a new genus and species from the Arafoera Sea Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
During my visit to western New Guinea (1954-1955), a rich collection of marine animals was presented to the Leiden Museum by the Fisheries Department of the Netherlands New Guinea Government. The specimens, mostly fishes, had been captured during previous trips of the Government fishing vessel "De Goede Hoop", and were preserved on the initiative of Mr. D. C. Zwollo, at the time Director of the Fisheries Department there, to whom we are especially indebted. One of the most intriguing specimens of this fish collection, evidently representing a new genus and probably even new higher categories of fish taxonomy, is discussed here. It is a pleasure to dedicate the present species to Prof. Dr. H. Boschma, who has expertly guided the first steps of so many...
