Agency Theory Issues in the Food Processing Industry AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Golden, Bill B.; Tsoodle, Leah J..
The objective is to identify significant determinants of performance for food processing firms over the 1992 to 2003 time period, focusing particularly on the issue of family control. Variables measuring firm effects such as asset size, governance, income distribution, and risk are used to explain return on equity. This study builds upon previous research by including a measure of income distribution in the food processing industry. Governance variables are found to be significant determinants of return on equity. The results found no evidence of agency problems in family-controlled firms during this time period.

HEALTH VALUE IN FOOD SAFETY SURVEILLANCE INITIATIVES AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Mowat, David; Boland, Michael A..
Recognizing the increasing concern about the potential health effects of genetically modified foods, this research provides a framework for economic value of monitoring genetically modified food for their potential long-term human health effects. This is with the view of helping policy makers improve resource allocation decisions in the face of competing public health initiatives. Using a hypothetical population exposed to a hypothetical product, we estimate the health value associated with a post-market surveillance initiative. The analysis indicate that the principal challenge confronting decision makers in the implementation of post-market surveillance initiatives is prioritising products for monitoring given the uncertainty associated with outcomes...

Country-of-Origin Labeling for Uruguayan Beef AgEcon
Perez, Lautaro; Boland, Michael A.; Schroeder, Ted C..
The objective of this research is to identify Chilean consumer attitudes towards COO (Country-of-Origin) labeling, determine the importance of COO, and identify consumers who are most likely to buy COO-labeled beef products from Uruguay. The results suggest that age, number of children at home, whether the interviewee was the primary person responsible for meal selection, and whether interviewees purchased beef from different countries were significant determinants of whether a Chilean interviewee regarded COO as important. Age, income level, beef purchase frequency, and homemaker were significant determinants of whether an interviewee would purchase COO-labeled beef from Uruguay. These results suggest that COO is not a particularly important variable to...

Cargill: Biotechnology and Value Creation in Wheat AgEcon
Boland, Michael A..
About 40 percent of the world's food supply came from rice and wheat-based foods. The genome of wheat (a genome is a set of chromosomes) was much larger than those of other crops such as rice. Deciphering the wheat genome was a much more complex process. Wheat had six DNA strands (e.g., humans have only a double-helix DNA strand) and almost twice as many genes as humans. GM wheat would be available for production by 2004. The objective of this case is to describe: segregation and identity-preservation issues in the wheat value chain, the role of Cargill in that value chain, and issues surrounding the introduction of genetically modified wheat.

The Restructuring of Dakota Growers Pasta Company AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; McKee, Gregory J..
The decision discussed in this case is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of restructuring Dakota Growers Pasta. Cook’s life cycle taxonomy of cooperatives is used to explain how the cooperative moved throughout its life until it restructured as a closely-held organization. The organization does not appear to have changed greatly in its operation since the conversion.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PHOSPHORUS - REDUCING TECHNOLOGIES IN PORK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A..
Soil phosphorus levels have increased as pork production has become concentrated. Phosphorus-based manure management regulations for land application have been proposed by policy makers. The objective of this study is to determine benefits/costs of adopting two alternatives for reducing phosphorus: synthetic amino acids or phytase. An optimization model is constructed to determine optimal excreted nitrogen and phosphorus from alternative feed ingredients. Results are derived using different manure storage and application systems. While the two alternatives are not least-cost ingredients, they become profitable when producers are constrained by land. An important result is that the net cost of manure is negative.

North American Bison Cooperative and North Dakota Natural Beef LLC: Governance of a Contractual Alliance AgEcon
McKee, Gregory J.; Boland, Michael A..
In 2005, North American Bison Cooperative formed a contractual alliance with North Dakota Natural Beef, LLC. The alliance was formed in order to enable the cooperative to enhance returns from its physical and managerial assets by entering the natural beef market. This case describes the resources shared by the cooperative and LLC, how the alliance was governed, the risk of opportunism by the CEO and associated trust building and control mechanisms, and the benefits cooperative members received. Although the two companies operate under different business principles, cooperative members exercise indirect control over the resources they contribute to the venture.

Evaluation of CO2 Emissions by Kansas Agribusiness Retailers AgEcon
Canales, Elizabeth; Boland, Michael A..
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their negative effect on the environment is a growing concern in the world. It is estimated that agriculture is responsible for 7% of the total GHG emissions in the United States. Currently, environmental policies to regulate GHG are in place in different countries and are expected to increase in the future. The objective of this study was to estimate carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions from eight agribusiness retailers in Kansas. Data consisted of energy inputs from the operation of the agribusiness retailers and the crop land these retailers serve. Carbon emission coefficients were employed to determine carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions associated with each energy input used during their operations. Results suggest...

DIVERSIFICATION AND FIRM PERFORMANCE IN THE FOOD ECONOMY AgEcon
Schumacher, Sara K.; Boland, Michael A..
The effects of diversification on firm value in the food economy are analyzed within four major sectors: processing, wholesale, retail, and restaurant. We find that diversification in the food economy contributes to positive excess firm value. Processing firms are most likely to diversify while restaurant firms have the largest positive diversification effect.

THE PERSISTENCE OF PROFITABILITY IN THE FOOD AND AGRIBUSINESS SECTOR AgEcon
Schumacher, Sara K.; Boland, Michael A..
We evaluate the persistence of incremental industry, firm-specific, and corporate-parent effects on firm profitability across the food and agribusiness sector and further analyze the persistence within four major sectors: processing, wholesale, retail, and restaurant. Results suggest that industry effects are more persistent than corporate effects across the food and agribusiness sector. Results also suggest the retail supermarket sector has had relatively stable profits due to both industry and firm effects during the time period under study. The results have implications with respect to research and extension programs targeted toward educating producers and management about producer-owned businesses.

Measuring the Benefits to Advertising under Monopolistic Competition AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Crespi, John M.; Silva, Jena; Xia, Tian.
This paper determines the benefits and costs of firm-level advertising in a monopolistically competitive industry. The model is useful in an environment in which firm-level costs may be absent or imprecise. The empirical example uses data on the advertising for a new line of prune snacks by Sunsweet Growers between 2008 and 2010, revealing average benefit-cost estimates from $1.26 to $4.35 for every dollar allocated to the new product line.

Land O' Lakes AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Barton, David G..
The case begins with an examination of Land O' Lakes' diversified portfolio of businesses. The business had undergone significant changes since 1998 - it dominated market share in butter and deli cheese, had become the largest crop protection, plant nutrient, and feed manufacturer in the US, and was the fourth largest US seed company. Land O'Lakes used mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions of public and private firms, and divestitures/closing of assets to restructure its portfolio to build its portfolio. The main issue was to evaluate its diversified portfolio of businesses and find ways to improve future performance.

Input Quality in the Sugar Beet Industry AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Marsh, Thomas L..
Using 23 years of data (1978-2000), this study examines seven vertically integrated sugar beet plants representing three different companies in the United States. The objective of this research is to identify the marginal costs of producing sugar beets for vertically integrated sugar beet processors as a way of determining the cost savings from higher quality sugar beets. In doing so, we account for quality differences in the sugar beet input that are used to manufacture the refined sugar output. The results quantify links between high quality sugar beets and lower processing costs.

MARGINAL VALUE OF QUALITY ATTRIBUTES FOR NATURAL AND ORGANIC BEEF AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Schroeder, Ted C..
The objective of this research is to determine the marginal value of attributes to consumers with respect to natural beef or beef produced with organic grains. A hedonic model is used to value attributes of 11 different primal cuts. Results suggest that producers under this particular natural/implant-free marketing alliance should market high-yielding animals rather than high-quality grading animals. Consumers of this beef value taste, as measured by dry aging, and leanness, as measured by USDA Select grade. The economic magnitudes of the variables under a producer's control were small relative to those that could be controlled by a processor.
