The occurrence of health and welfare problems is probably different in organic pig herds compared to conventional production systems. Improved management in the individual herd may reduce problems and to ensure a high level of animal health and product safety it is necessary to be able to monitor and assess risk factors present in the herd. An expert panel of 10 Danish and Swedish veterinarians and pig production advisers has assisted in the selection of common health and welfare problems in organic pig herds and the identification of risk factors. Important health and welfare problems and the corresponding risk factors are presented in the text. Based on this a HACCP programme for organic pig farmers as a management tool is currently being developed. |

Future herd health management systems need to focus on precaution and documentation of how product and process failures are prevented. HACCP-based herd health surveillance schemes have been developed for dairy cattle herds, organic pig and egg production systems and for mink production in Denmark. The generic part of such systems, including definition of hazards and risk factors, can be developed through expert opinion panels. The development of sets of control points, alarm values and corrective actions need typically to be farm specific. On-farm systems focusing on broad topics such as animal welfare and food safety tend to grow too big to be operational. It is suggested that a part of the system is controlled through ‘good management practice’ leaving... |

Productive performance of organic pig farms is lower compared to conventional farms, but only very few data exist. Better knowledge of the productivity of organic herds regarding litter size at birth, piglet losses around birth and during lactation, as well as housing and management conditions should help to identify critical points and hence to improve the situation. Therefore, a research project was initiated in 6 EU countries (Corepig). As part of this, farmers recorded production data during 3-11 months starting between January and July 2008. Farmers were asked to record the numbers of piglets born dead, born alive as well as the number of piglets at weaning. Taking into account the quality of the records and setting a threshold of ≥ 10 litters/farm,... |

In this workshop, we will summarize the results of the QLIF project on food safety issues. The participants discuss safety problems related to organic and low input standards and techniques for both animal and plant products. They will relate the findings to consumers’ perception and concern. Improved production and processing techniques will be suggested. |

Introduction Organic pig production is still a small-scale produc-tion, achieving, however, increased interest by con-sumers who are concerned about the conventional production method. The EU-Regulation (EEC-No. 1804/1999) on organic livestock production, now replaced by EEC-No 834/2007, was introduced to provide a framework ensuring living conditions for organic livestock to be better than those in conven-tional systems and to harmonize the rules across member states. Scientifically based information on how and to what degree the EU-Regulation contrib¬utes to the objective of a high status of pig health in organic farming is scarce. Further information is needed to assess whether consumer expectations in organic pig production in Europe are met.... |

The objective of this paper is to describe the Salmonella transfer risk in different conventional and organic pig production systems. Twelve organic, 12 conventional outdoor and 12 conventional indoor herds participated in the investigation. Faecal sam-ples from approximately 50 pigs per herd collected before and after transport to the abattoir were ana-lysed for density of Salmonella, and meat juice sam-ples from the pigs were analysed for antibodies against S. enterica. The results showed that 9,5 % of the organic and 8,1 % of the conventional outdoor pigs were seropositive, but they were unlikely to shed Salmonella on-farm, and less than 1,9 % of the pigs were shedding Salmonella at the abattoir. The indoor pigs had a seroprevalence of 6,8 %, and 2,6 %... |

Sixty organic pig producers from Denmark, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden have completed a questionnaire concerning health and welfare problems in organic sow herds. Half the farmers perceived they had a problem with piglet mortality. The most common cause of death was crushing of piglets by the sow, but also piglets that were weak at birth and shortage of milk in the sow caused problems in many herds. Weaning diarrhoea concerned 25 % of the farmers, mainly in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands; and respiratory diseases caused prob-lems in 43 % of the farms, especially in the Nether-lands. Diarrhoea was the major cause of death in Danish weaned pigs; in the Netherlands they were more likely to die from respiratory diseases, while insufficient... |

This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently... |

The prevalence of faecal Salmonella shedding has been compared in organic, conventional outdoor, and indoor finishing pig herds in a Danish survey with participation of 34 herds. Individual faecal and meat juice samples were collected from 30-50 pigs per herd and analysed for presence of Salmonella, and Salmonella antibodies, respectively. The results showed a low level of on-farm Salmonella shedding (<0,2 %) in organic and conventional outdoor herds compared to 2,5 % in indoor pigs (P<0,0001), and also a lower prevalence of Salmonella shedding in outdoor systems at slaughter (<2 %) compared to 4,1 % in indoor systems (P<0,01). The overall seroprevalence was 8,5 % with no significant differences between systems. Seropositivity was a significant... |
