Discovery of Messinian Canyons and new seismic stratigraphic model, Offshore Provence (SE France): implications for the hydrographic network reconstruction ArchiMer
Tassy, A.; Fournier, F.; Munch, P.; Borgomano, J.; Thinon, I.; Fabri, Marie-claire; Rabineau, M.; Arfib, B.; Begot, J.; Beslier, M. -o; Cornee, J. -j.; Fournillon, A.; Gorini, C.; Guennoc, P.; Leonide, P.; Oudet, J.; Paquet, F.; Sage, F.; Toullec, R..
The interpretation of high-resolution 2D marine seismic profiles together with the analysis of sea-bottom cores allowed a stratigraphic and structural framework of the Provence continental shelf to be proposed. The integration of onshore and offshore stratigraphy, structure and geomorphology provided new insights into Messinian paleotopography and paleohydrography. A geological map of the offshore Provence continental shelf, isobath map of the base Plio-Quaternary surface are presented for the first time in this area. The base Plio-Quaternary surface is a polyphased unconformity that is composed of deep canyons developed by fluvial erosion during the Messinian event, and wave-cut surfaces formed during post-Messinian transgressions. The study evidenced a...

Single foraminifera Mg/Ca analyses of past glacial-interglacial temperatures derived from G. ruber sensu stricto and sensu lato morphotypes ArchiMer
Schmitt, A.; Elliot, M.; Thirumalai, K.; La, C.; Bassinot, F.; Petersen, J.; Movellan, A.; Jorry, Stephan; Borgomano, J..
The ratio of magnesium to calcium (Mg/Ca) in foraminiferal shells is commonly used as a proxy for past ocean temperature. Recent advances in elemental analyses now enable single-specimen measurements of planktic foraminifera and thus, can provide information on past seasonal and interannual variability, owing to the near-monthly lifespan of foraminifera. In this study, we explore the temperature variance recorded by Mg/Ca in tests of foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber, a planktic species that occurs throughout the year in tropical waters. Using LA-ICP-MS, we characterize Mg/Ca variability in single specimens of two morphotypes of G. ruber picked from a sediment core retrieved offshore New Caledonia. We provide an estimate of the range of calcification...

Growth and demise of Cenozoic isolated carbonate platforms: New insights from the Mozambique Channel seamounts (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Courgeon, Simon; Jorry, Stephan; Camoin, G. F.; Boudagher-fadel, M. K.; Jouet, Gwenael; Revillon, Sidonie; Bachelery, P.; Pelleter, Ewan; Borgomano, J.; Poli, E.; Droxler, A. W..
Although long-term evolutions of isolated shallow-water carbonate platforms and demise episodes leading to guyot formation have been the subject of numerous studies during the last decades, their driving processes are still the subject of active debates. The Mozambique Channel (SW Indian Ocean) is characterized by several flat-topped seamounts ranging from 11°S to 21°S in latitudes. Based on a comprehensive geomorphologic study and on dredged samples analysis, we show that these features correspond to tropical isolated shallow-water carbonate platforms. Coupling strontium isotopy and foraminifera biostratigraphy, well-constrained chronostratigraphy results indicate that shallow-water carbonate production started in the Mozambique Channel during distinct...
