| As part of the French-American Ridge Atlantic program the French-American Zero-Angle Photon Spectrometer and Rocks (FAZAR) cruise conducted water column studies between 33 and 40 degrees N along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)) to detect hydrothermal activity and map its influence, This paper describes the large-scale hydrography within the axial valley, with particular emphasis on the hydrothermally active Lucky Strike segment (37 degrees 17'N). The FAZAR study area is affected be the presence of the Azores Current and Mediterranean Water (MW). | Axial bathymetry, major/trace elements, and isotopes suggest:that the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) between 56 degrees S and 66 degrees S is devoid of any hotspot influence. PAR (56-66 degrees 5) samples have in-average lower Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 and higher Pb-206/(204)pb than northern Pacific midocean ridge basalts (MORB), and also than MORE from the other oceans. The high variability of Pb isotopic ratios (compared to Sr and Nd) can be due to either a;general high mu (HIMU) (high U/Pb) affinity of the southern Pacific upper mantle or to a mantle event first recorded in time by Pb isotopes. | Whole-rock geochemical data were obtained for 178 samples selected from the petrologically freshest parts of most of the flow units recovered from the nine holes. These data include 170 major element analyses (XRF) and 174 trace-element analyses (XRF and INAA). We include representative microprobe analyses of the primary minerals and fresh basaltic glasses (where present) in 40 selected samples. We also present 87Sr/88Sr ratios for 14 samples selected from the holes at 63"N. These analytical data, together with petrographic data obtained from the study of some 500 thin sections, have enabled us to establish a detailed lithostratigraphy for each basement section. | Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. | The MAPCO cruise of the R.V. Jean-Charcot (October-November, 1979) sampled zero-age basalts along the Mid Atlantic Ridge from the Azores triple junction to 24°N. Preliminary shipboard geochemical analyses together with previOusly collected data show that hygromagmaphile elements are not randomly distributed along the ridge. North from Hayes transform, the chondrite normalised diagrams of these elements show flat to enriched distributions for the most hygromagmaphile elements. South from this transform, these diagrams are systematically depleted for the most hygromagmaphile elements. These data are interpreted in terms of regional upper mantle heterogeneity. | In 1972, chemical analysis of rocks using a dispersive X-ray fluorescence system was shown to be practicable at sea during the "Gibraco cruise" of the R.V. Jean Charcot (Bougault and Cambon, 1973). The same equipment and techniques were used to perform analyses on Glomar Challenger during Leg 37. The aim of this report is to describe the instruments used, the basic routine operations, the problems encountered, and how they were solved. From the experience of analytical work onboard and the precision of the results which is discussed, some brief recommendations are made to IPOD for shipboard chemical analysis.
