One of the problems faced by oyster farmers in France is the immediate or delayed mortality of oysters in the storage tanks prior to shipping. This may be due to overstocking and/or improper water management. To investigate the problem, experiments were performed in commercial storage tanks stocked with oysters at different densities. Retention efficiency in oyster Crassostrea gigas exposed to variable food quantity and quality ArchiMer

Relative retention efficiency (Er%) of Crassostrea gigas was estimated in the laboratory with 7 diets consisting of algae and silt. Total particulates varied from 1.34 mg/l in natural sea water to 27.65 mg/l in natural sea water enriched with silt. It was also calculated from field experiment to get high concentration of seston up to 66 mg/l. It appeared that Crassostrea gigas did not adjust its retention according to the food quality and the gill porosity was controlled by the concentration of particulate matter. In low seston load (1.34 mg/l) the oyster showed no change in retention for particles larger than 3-4 µm (Equivalent Spherical Diameter, ESD) but at the highest concentration (66 mg/l) it could only retain with a maximum efficiency particles...

Introducing new species for shellfish farming is essential for expanding farmers' markets and for minimising the pathological risks that endangers professional marine aquaculture activities, which traditionally rely on only one species. Ifremer's Aquaculture and Pathological Genetics (GAP) laboratory participates in the mollusc genetics network (REGEMO). Since 1989, this network has been carrying out a selection programme for resistance or tolerance to Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) to revitalize cultivation of this species on a national level.

Paralytic shellfish poison accumulation yields and feeding time activity in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and king scallop (Pecten maximus) ArchiMer

Pacific oysters and king scallops placed individually in a recirculating flume were fed for 2 weeks with a constant concentration (120 cell ml(-1)) of a toxic strain of Alexandrium minutum. Fluorescence at the outlet of each experimental unit was measured continuously, and biodeposits were recovered twice daily to evaluate feeding time activity (FTA) and rates of organic filtration (OFR), ingestion (OIR) and organic absorption (OAR). Les cartographies annuelles des biomasses microphytobenthiques ont été réalisées pour le bassin de Marennes-Oléron. Parallèlement les cartographies des caractéristiques sédimentaires ont été établies simultanément aux cartes d'abondance et biomasse macrofauniques en portant un effort particulier sur les densités des compétiteurs des huîtres notamment les Crépidules. Simultanément les études des mécanismes contrôlant le réseau trophique sur la vasière de Brouage ont été poursuivies notamment les relations entre les flux de sels nutritifs et le microphytobenthos. Les expérimentations on continu sur le site du Chapus au centre du bassin de Marennes-Oléron pendant le mois de mai 1991 et d'octobre 1991 ont permis de préciser la filtration des huîtres en fonction de la variabilité de la charge particulaire. Ces nouveaux résultats permettent d'affiner les modèles de croissance des huîtres. L'objectif général de l'étude est de simuler les épisodes de contamination de certains bivalves (huîtres et moules) par les toxines d'Alexandrium minutum et A. calenella à partir d'un module expérimental adapté, et en vue de construire un modèle de contamination applicable à ces espèces. Ce modèle sera ensuite susceptible d'être couplé aux modèles biologiques locaux (estuaire de Penzé et étang de Thau) de déterminisme des blooms, ainsi qu'aux modèles hydrodynamiques développés par différentes équipes (Ifremer, Université de Montpellier). La première année (2001-2002) était consacrée à la simulation des contaminations en estuaire de Penzé (Alexandrium minulum) et au développement de cultures en masse d'A. calenella de Thau en bioréacteurs.

Comparison of growth of mussel, Mytilus edulis, on longline, pole and bottom culture sites in the Pertuis Breton, France ArchiMer

Growth of the mussel, Mytilus edulis, was compared for the first time under three culture regimes, longline located in open sea, pole and on-bottom both situated on an intertidal flat, in the Pertuis Breton, on the Atlantic coastline of France. Mussel sampling was performed on a monthly basis over 1 year while monitoring of hydrobiological parameters was conducted on a biweekly basis. Fluctuation of environmental parameters showed a similar pattern on both sea and shore locations with generally higher concentration levels for the intertidal area compared with the open sea, i.e. 4.07 and 3.17 mg 1(-1) for particulate organic matter, 3.16 and 2 mug 1(-1) for chlorophyll-a, 58.43 and 38.72 mg 1(-1) for inorganic-N, respectively. A study of pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera growth and mortality was done on a monthly basis between June 1990 and September 1991 in Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago). Meanwhile, sampling parameters representative of bivalves food showed a remarquable spatial stability whithin the lagoon. The amplitude of temporal variability varied in the order of some days. Carrying capacity appears low : energetic content of particulate material in waters is about 2 joules/liter, ten times lower than in temperate areas. On the opposite, seasonal effect is reduced and particulate food is always available. During a fortnightly tidal cycle, a Mytilus edulis population was submitted to natural food conditions in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. During 4 tidal cycles, in vivo continuous measurements of turbidity and fluorescence were recorded to study the evolution of Total Particulate Matter (TPM), phaeopigments and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Turbidity in the water column is clearly influenced by resuspension of sediment. Degradated cells of phytoplankton were associated with sediments, involving strong correlation between phaeopigments and turbidity. Feeding responses of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) to inclusion of different proportions of toxic dinoflagellates in their diet ArchiMer

An experimental flow-through system allowing determination of the feeding behaviour of individual molluscs was used to study oysters exposed to mixed diets composed of varying proportions of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and two strains (toxic and nontoxic) of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium larnarense. Our results show that, when compared to a T. weissflogii unialgal diet, even a diatomltoxic dinoflagellate ratio as low in biomass as 90/10 reduced clearance rates and biodeposit production by oysters. Ecophysiological study was conducted on the japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), during May 1992. Most of the somatic growth of the oyster occured during that month. The measurements were achieved from a removable laboratory stated in Le Chapus for 3 days at different tide level (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). The food conditions were monitored through a computer with a continuous record of the turbidity during aIl the tidal cycle. The tidal saline ponds on the Atlantic coasts of France were highly productive before being hit by two consecutive epizooties. Parasitic diseases were described on this species, both of them leading 10 economic losses, as heavy mortalities have usually been recorded before the oysters reach the commercial size. La filtration et la consommation d'oxygène d'Ostrea edulis ont été mesurées à différentes températures (10°-30°C) sur des individus de 5 à 120g de poids total (0,1 à 2,7g de poids sec) et hors période de gamétogénèse. Pour chaque température, la relation allométrique entre la réponse physiologique et le poids sec de l'animal (W) a été estimée selon la relation: y=aWb.
