Mathematical model and numerical simulations of the migration and growth of Biscay Bay anchovy early larval stages ArchiMer
Boussouar, Ahmed; Le Bihan, Soizick; Arino, Ovide; Prouzet, Patrick.
The paper presents a mathematical model of the early larval stage, from spawn to the resorption of the yolk-sac, of the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, of the Bay of Biscay. The model describes the temperature-dependent growth and drift of passive larvae by the currents and vertical turbulence. A numerical code has been built and numerous simulations, fed by both biological (egg surveys by AZTI-San Sebastian, Spain, and IFREMER, France) and physical (circulation model by IFREMER-Brest, France) data, were undertaken. Their main features are presented and discussed here, and some conclusions on the possible utilization of the results in improving estimates of anchovy stocks by the daily egg production method are drawn.

Modelling and numerical simulations of larval migration of the sole (Solea solea (L.)) of the Bay of Biscay. Part 1: modelling ArchiMer
Ramzi, Azeddine; Arino, Ovide; Koutsikopoulos, Constantine; Boussouar, Ahmed; Lazure, Pascal.
A spatio-temporal model describing the dynamics of a population of sole is presented. The model is an extension to a 2D-space structure of a 1D model published by the three first authors. Spatial migration is modelled by an advection-diffusion second order operator with constant coefficients. The physical domain is represented by a half-plane with the coast as its boundary. A formula for estimating the proportion of eggs reaching the juvenile stage, depending upon climatic, transport, growth and mortality processes, is derived. Numerical results are deferred to elsewhere.

Analysis and visualization of the glass eel behavior (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour estuary and estimate of its upstream migration speed ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Odunlami, Marc; Duquesne, Elise; Boussouar, Ahmed.
The studies carried out on the Adour estuary on the migration of glass eels lead to the characterisation of their swimming behavior. Individuals migrate passively with the flood tide current behind the dynamic tide front, and their movements into the water column are linked to the surrounding luminosity and water turbidity. A numerical model was built from observations gathered on glass eel densities during scientific surveys. It uses the outputs of a hydrodynamic model accounting for the variations in the river flow and tide coefficient. It allows the simulation of the displacement of a particle in the longitudinal axis of the estuary. The variation of the vertical movements through the water column takes into account the cloud cover, the moon phases, the...

Modelling and numerical simulations of larval migration of the sole (Solea solea (L.)) of the Bay of Biscay. Part 2: numerical simulations ArchiMer
Ramzi, Azeddine; Arino, Ovide; Koutsikopoulos, Constantine; Boussouar, Ahmed; Lazure, Pascal.
This paper is the second part of a work on the modelling of larval migration and growth fur the sole of the Bay of Biscay (Solea solea (L.)). The goal of the paper is twofold: first of all, it aims at presenting a numerical application of the formulae (concerning the recruitment rate) elaborated in the first paper. Results show a high sensitivity with respect to some parameters. Then, a comparison is made with a numerical model using a 3D circulation model provided by Ifremer.
