Regaining importance of keeping dairy cows in grassland systems implies a detailed evaluation of breeding strategies on genetic resistances against endoparasite infections. The present study aimed on i) a comparison of different black and white cattle selection lines for three endoparasite traits, and ii) the estimation of genetic parameters for parasite resistances. A research design was implemented to create three different genetic lines within herds on the basis of a German Holstein cow (GHC) population: line 1 = GHC x New Zealand (NZ) sires, line 2 = GHC x GH sires, line 3 = GHC x GH pasture sires. GH pasture sires represent bulls of German origin with high breeding values for the “grassland traits” being important in NZ. A forth genetic line (line 4)... |

Breeding goals of Holstein dairy cattle in New Zealand (NZL) focus on traits reflecting adaptation to pasture-based systems. Due to high prices for concentrates, and advantages for cattle health and welfare, low input grazing systems become important in regions of North-West Germany. The present study addresses the hypothesis that progeny of NZL-Holstein sires are superior in 30 German grassland farms compared to offspring of Holstein sires being progeny tested in German indoor systems. A research design was implemented to create three different genetic groups (F1 generation) within herds on the basis of a German Holstein cow (GHC) population: Group 1=GHC x NZL sires, group 2=GHC x GH sires, group 3=GHC x GH_pasture sires. GH_pasture sires represent bulls... |

Extract from attached abstract: ... results from the present study do not justify general utilization of HF sires from NZL to improve productivity and functional traits in grassland systems in Germany. Heterogeneous results were found with e.g. advantages for NZL_HF regarding health composites of feet and legs, but in contrast impaired udder health. The broad pool of German Holstein sires should be used to select specific sires for distinct environments and breeding goals, e.g. HF_DEU_P for grassland systems. Furthermore, the present study revealed genetic background for traits that are generally related to cattle husbandry and farm management, e.g. the welfare indicator THS. |

The aims of the present study were i) to analyse the genetic structure of the local black and white cattle breed (DSN), and ii) to analyse genotype by environment interactions based on defined herd parameter groups (geographic, environmental, phenotypic descriptors). The study considered 3688 DSN and 3599 HF cows from 46 herds keeping both breeds. Farms mostly reflected pasture based low input production systems. A multiple trait approach, i.e. defining same traits in different clusters as two different traits, was applied to prove genotype by environment interactions based on genetic correlation estimates. Genetic correlations between low heritability functional traits were lower than for production traits. Especially for functional traits such as somatic... |
