Growth and reproductive performances of juveniles and sexually mature pollack Pollachius pollachius in different conditions ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Severe, Armelle; Barone, Herve; Suquet, Marc; Buchet, Vincent; Le Roux, Annick; Gaignon, Jean-louis; Fostier, Alexis; Fauvel, Christian.
The pollack Pollachius pollachius is a commercially important fish, considered as a candidate for aquaculture in France. Rearing attempts are promising (Suquet et al., 1996), and more information is required about its reproduction, to contribute to a better management of breeders for this species. This study was designed to examine the first maturity in pollack and the effects of conditions such as origin and delayed reproduction season, on gonad maturation, reproductive and growth performances of adults.

Relationship between PAH biotransformation as measured by biliary metabolites and EROD activity, and genotoxicity in juveniles of sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Wessel, Nathalie; Santos, Raphael; Menard, Dominique; Le Menach, K.; Buchet, Vincent; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Loizeau, Veronique; Burgeot, Thierry; Budzinski, H.; Akcha, Farida.
Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the marine environment Their toxicity is mainly linked to the ability of marine species to biotransform them into reactive metabolites PAHs are thus often detected at trace levels in animal tissues For biomonitoring purposes this findings have two main consequences (i) the determination of the PAH tissue concentration is not suitable for the evaluation of individual exposure to PAHs (ii) It can explain sometimes the lack of correlations obtained with relevant markers of toxicity such as genotoxicity biomarkers The aim of the present study was to better investigate the link between PAH exposure and genotoxicity in marine flatfish During a laboratory experiment juvenile soles were exposed...

Buchet, Vincent; Palvadeau, Hubert; Boussard, O..
Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results. Furthermore the phase with artemia yields, systematically, better results than with harvested zooplankton ; then artemia seems a excellent substitute food representing a...

Pollack (Pollachius pollachius): Acquisition of biologic data in a breeding purpose ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Suquet, Marc; Omnes, Marie-helene; Petton, Bruno; Normant, Yvon; Severe, Armelle; Quemener, Loic; Barone, Herve; Fauvel, Christian; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
The fishing of pollack which concerns essentially, France, United Kingdom and Norway, and at a lower level Ireland and Denmark, is situated between 10 and 15000 tons a year. In 1996, France was the first producer of Pollack. Since 1980, a decrease of production is observed in Europe. In France, landing reached 3000t. in 1998 (Suquet, 2001). However, the demand remaining strong, aquaculture could be a solution to satisfy the deficit between the French production and the domestic demand.

Etude d'un élevage intégré bars-huîtres ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Bluteau, A.
Whatever the hydraulic gestion, an épuration of the fishes sewages is possible with the integrated system studied. The main action is situed in the intermediary pond with a significant decrease of nutrients, especially ammonia, and particulate mineral matters. The oyster's pond have no significant action on nutrients, but their action is real on chlorophyll which become limiting factor in 20% renewal system. One of the effluent, system 1 (renewal 10%) had high suspended matter and low nutrient concentrations. The other (renewal 20%) was poor in supcnded matters (chlorophyll). The system 2 give best oyster's growth, close to traditional nursery performances, with an highest mortality (32%). In the first system, suspended matter concentrations are too high...

Induced spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus: use of multivariate and univariate analysis methods in the search for side effects of LH-RHa treatments and ovarian development state upon spawn quality ArchiMer
Gardes, Lionel; Villanove, Philippe; Buchet, Vincent; Fauvel, Christian.
The present work examines the usefulness of the combination of multivariate analyses and further one-way analysis of variance in the search for links between causes and effects in heterologous stimulation of spawning in fish. Stimulations with both 20 and 50 mu g . kg(-1) doses of [D Trp(6)] luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LH-RHa) were effective in inducing and synchronizing spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus. Oocyte development monitoring using ovarian biopsy allowed treatment injections at different stages of maturation. The influence at stimulation time of female oocyte development state upon further development was shown. An interesting potential of second stimulation, leading to high quality spawns, was established and factors...

Comparative study on the contamination and decontamination of Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and blue mussel Mytilus edulis by oxytetracycline and oxolinic acid ArchiMer
Pouliquen, Hervé; Le Bris, Hervé; Buchet, Vincent; Pinault, Louis.
Marine fish farms use many antibacterial agents to prevent or fight bacterial diseases. The major part of the orally supplied drugs reach the environment, either directly due to excessive feeding and reduced appetite of the cultured fish, or indirectly after passing through the fish. Some of the drugs entering the environment may be taken up by bivalves. Comparative contamination and decontamination of Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and blue mussel Mytilus edulis were studied when these bivalves were kept during 10 d in seawater containing oxytetracycline (OTC) or oxolinic acid (OA) at concentrations of 0.15 and 1.50 mg l(-1). After the 10 d exposure at the seawater concentrations of 0.15 and 1.50 mg l(-1), OTC and OA concentrations in bivalve tissues...

Effects of temperature on the growth of pollack (Pollachius pollachius) juveniles ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Buchet, Vincent; Vincent, Benoit; Le Delliou, Herve; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of juvenile pollack was assessed at five constant temperatures (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 degrees C) in an 84-day trial. Duplicate groups of 75 fish (initial weight 143 +/- 2 g) were held in O-2 saturated water (102-103% saturation) and fed to apparent satiation. Growth increased as temperature increased from 9 degrees C up to a plateau at 12-15 degrees C (NS differences between 12 and 15 degrees C) followed by a decrease from 18 degrees C. No growth occurred at 21 degrees C. For the overall period, specific growth rates were 0.52% and 0.53% day(-1) at 12 and 15 degrees C compared to 0.40% day(-1) at 18 degrees C. Feed intake was maximum at 15-18 degrees C (0.68-0.69% day(-1)) and it was significantly lower at 21 degrees C (0.45% day(-1)). Apparent feed...

Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Buchet, Vincent; Dupuy, Beatrice.

Effect of lipid level in a compound diet on the development of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larvae ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
Red drum larvae were fed from day 11 to day 24 post-hatch, with Artemia (LP group) or two isoproteinic-formulated diets with varying lipid levels, 15% (L15 group) and 30% (L30 group). The lipid fraction was composed of a mixture of cod liver oil and soy lecithin. Larvae fed Artemia exhibited the greatest length, L30 diet induced a larvae length significantly greater than that obtained with L15 diet (P < 0,05). No difference was observed in larvae survival among the three dietary groups. The increase in dietary lipid concentration led to an increase in amylase and trypsin secretion levels in 24-day-old larvae. The pancreatic secretion level measured in L30 group was close to that of LP group, suggesting that the maturation of the pancreatic functions was...

Buchet, Vincent; Villanove, Philippe.

Comparative Allometric Growth of the Mimetic Ephippid Reef Fishes Chaetodipterus faber and Platax orbicularis ArchiMer
Barros, Breno; Sakai, Yoichi; Pereira, Pedro H. C.; Gasset, Eric; Buchet, Vincent; Maamaatuaiahutapu, Moana; Ready, Jonathan S.; Oliveira, Yrlan; Giarrizzo, Tommaso; Vallinoto, Marcelo.
Mimesis is a relatively widespread phenomenon among reef fish, but the ontogenetic processes relevant for mimetic associations in fish are still poorly understood. In the present study, the allometric growth of two allopatric leaf-mimetic species of ephippid fishes, Chaetodipterus faber from the Atlantic and Platax orbicularis from the Indo-Pacific, was analyzed using ten morphological variables. The development of fins was considered owing to the importance of these structures for mimetic behaviors during early life stages. Despite the anatomical and behavioral similarities in both juvenile and adult stages, C. faber and P. orbicularis showed distinct patterns of growth. The overall shape of C. faber transforms from a rounded-shape in mimetic juveniles to...

Stavrakakis, Christophe; Papin, Mathias; Dupuy, Beatrice; Riou, Karen; Penisson, Christian; Nourry, Max; Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Buchet, Vincent; Palvadeau, Hubert.

Infectivity and RNA Persistence of a Norovirus Surrogate, the Tulane Virus, in Oysters ArchiMer
Polo, David; Schaeffer, Julien; Teunis, Peter; Buchet, Vincent; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Oysters, being filter feeders, can accumulate some human pathogens such as norovirus, a highly infectious calicivirus, most common cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Accumulated virus decays over a period of days to weeks, possibly rendering contaminated oysters safe again. Sensitive molecular methods have been set up for shellfish analysis but without answering the question of infectious virus detection. Using the Tulane virus (TV), a norovirus surrogate that recognizes the same ligand as human norovirus in oyster tissues, the genome and infectious virus decay rates were estimated using inverse linear regression in a Bayesian framework for genome copies. Infectivity decreased faster than genome copies but infectious viruses were detected for...
