Review of records and notes on King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) in Brazil Hornero
Barquete,Viviane; Bugoni,Leandro; Silva-Filho,Rodolfo P.; Adornes,Andréa C..
A review of previous findings and new records of King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) on the Brazilian coast is presented. In total there are six records of the King Penguin and ten records of the Rockhopper Penguin. Juvenile and adults of both species were found stranded mostly on Rio Grande do Sul coast, southern Brazil. Records of King Penguins are restricted to the summer season, while records of Rockhopper Penguins are mostly during winter. Rockhopper Penguin appears to displace more regularly to the Subtropical Convergence area, while King Penguins appear to be vagrant in Brazil, following the Malvinas Current.

Seasonal abundance of the Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) at Lagoa dos Patos estuary, Southern Brazil Hornero
Barquete,Viviane; Vooren,Carolus Maria; Bugoni,Leandro.
Censuses of the Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) were carried out at a power tower near the mouth of Lagoa dos Patos estuary, southern Brazil, from November 2001 to October 2002. At this major roosting site, a total of 309 counts over 47 days of census were performed to estimate monthly variation in the abundance of the Neotropic Cormorant. The highest abundance occurred in January (1390 birds), and the lowest in May (117 birds). The tower was a roosting site for cormorants at night, which arrived around 15:30 h onward, with numbers increasing near dusk. Birds preferentially used the lower levels of the tower (including the concrete base and levels 1 and 2) throughout the year and this preference could be partially due to strong winds in the...

Four decades after Belton: a review of records and evidences on the avifauna of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Franz,Ismael; Agne,Carlos Eduardo; Bencke,Glayson Ariel; Bugoni,Leandro; Dias,Rafael Antunes.
ABSTRACT We present a new update of the list of birds of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on a thorough review of new records and evidences accumulated from February 2011 to July 2017. This is the fifth update since the first compilation based on a reasonably complete geographic coverage of the state, published by William Belton in 1978, and the second produced by a regional (informal) committee. It is also the first to widely use citizen science contributions available on shared portals and digital databases on the internet. Forty-three taxa were added, resulting in a final list with 704 species, 6.5% more than in the previous assessment in 2010. Two species were replaced due to taxonomic changes. Documentation for inclusions based on...

Revisão e atualização da lista das aves do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bencke,Glayson A.; Dias,Rafael A.; Bugoni,Leandro; Agne,Carlos Eduardo; Fontana,Carla S.; Maurício,Giovanni N.; Machado,Diogenes B..

Review of the breeding status of birds in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Maurício,Giovanni N.; Bencke,Glayson Ariel; Repenning,Márcio; Machado,Diogenes Borges; Dias,Rafael A.; Bugoni,Leandro.
Information on the breeding biology of birds is essential for improving avian life-history theory and implementing sound management and conservation actions for these organisms. Comprehensive reviews of this kind of information are lacking for most Neotropical regions, including Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Brazilian state. Aiming to update the knowledge on the reproductive status of birds in Rio Grande do Sul, we reviewed breeding records of all potential breeding species recorded in the state using a set of predefined, restrictive criteria for accepting breeding evidences as effective. Data satisfying our criteria were available for 165 species in the literature. We also collected novel breeding information obtained in the state for an additional...

New records, distribution and status of six seabird species in Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Dias,Rafael Antunes; Agne,Carlos Eduardo; Gianuca,Dimas; Gianuca,Andros; Barcellos-Silveira,André; Bugoni,Leandro.
Distribution records of poorly-known species are currently the most explored theme in the Brazilian seabird literature. If properly evaluated, this kind of information can improve our knowledge on distribution, migration and status of occurrence of these species. In this note we present new records for six species of poorly-known seabirds in the Brazilian coast, reviewing distribution records and defining their status of occurrence in the country. We consider Chionis albus (Gmelin, 1789) a pseudo-vagrant in Brazil and define its status as a scarce seasonal visitor from southern South America. We present the first records of Leucophaeus atricilla (Linnaeus, 1758) for Trindade Island, and of Leucophaeus pipixcan (Wagler, 1831) for the state of Rio Grande do...

The role of avian frugivores on germination and potential seed dispersal of the Brazilian Pepper Schinus terebinthifolius Biota Neotropica
D'Avila,Graziele; Gomes-Jr,Antonio; Canary,Ana Carolina; Bugoni,Leandro.
Frugivorous birds play a key role in seed dispersal and establishment of a range of plant species, including invasive weeds, such as the Brazilian Pepper Schinus terebinthifolius. The potential of seed dispersal of Schinus by birds with varied feeding behaviours was studied through seed-viability tests and germination experiments using seeds obtained from birds in the field and birds kept in captivity. It was found that seeds collected after gut passage in five bird species in the field had higher proportion of germination as well as higher germination rates compared to the control seeds. Viability of seeds ingested by the Blue-and-yellow Tanager Thraupis bonariensis, which mandibulates seeds before ingesting, was significantly lower than control seeds,...
