The aim was to quantify the factors influencing the detailed milk fatty acid profile. The results of large scale screening of the Danish dairy cattle population for a detailed milk fat composition revealed profound effects of breed, production system, parity, lactation stage and genetics. This opens up the possibility to differentiate the milk at farm level, by management and breeding strategies. |

This presentation provides an overview of the results from the projects "The optimal cow" and "SOBcows". The aim of "The optimal cow" is to derive economic values for breeding goal traits in four different production systems, among them an organic production system. The aim of "SOBcows" is to enhance the size and the profitability of the organic dairy production by adapting the breeding material to organic production circumstances and by indicating sustainable methods for sustainable niche production based on animals with specific genetic characteristics |

In this paper we present the results of a genome-wide association study to identify significant genes that contribute to genetic variation in abundant milk fatty acids (FAs) C14:0 and C16:0 with considering lactation stage effect. FA composition phenotypes were measured using Application Note 64 (FOSS) and were available on 24,661 milk samples from 3,213 Danish Holstein cows. Association mapping analyses was performed using a Bayesian Variable Selection method. Results showed, in total 21 significant SNPs were detected for C14:0 and 18 significant SNPs were detected for C16:0 that are significant in changing over lactation stage for abundant milk FAs C14:0 and C16:0. For both milk FAs most significant SNPs influencing the slope of the lactation curve were... |

Litteraturen viser... |

Abstract Milk fatty acid (FA) composition can be manipulated through feeding, and especially effects of grazing have been shown to promote a healthier milk FA profile due to increasing contents of beneficial FAs, like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3, the main n3 FA in milk). In addition to diet-based manipulations, selective breeding for specific FA could also be a strategy for altering the FA profile as milk FA display low to moderate heritabilites (0.07-0.34 in Danish Holstein). Since 2015, milk samples from all Danish dairy cows under yield control have been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy. The FOSS Application Note 64 has subsequently been used to predict content of seven FA groups (short-chain FA (SCFA),... |

The fatty acid (FA) composition of bovine milk may be related to human health and technological properties of dairy products. The FA composition can be altered both through management and breeding. Large scale FA profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population has now been implemented for more than a year. For the first time access to millions of FA observations across an entire dairy population enables in depth analysis of the factors affecting the FA profile of milk. This was the aim of this study. For 12 months more than 3.5 million milk samples from four Danish dairy breeds had been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy and application of FOSS Application Note 64 for predicting content of seven FA groups and four individual FA. The results showed... |
