Strudsholm, Finn; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Larsen, Lotte Bach; Poulsen, Nina Aagaard; Hein, Lisa; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Kargo, Morten; Munk, Arne.

Lactation stage dependent genome-wide association mapping for longitudinal data of milk fatty acids in dairy cattle using Bayesian mixture models Organic Eprints
Shetty, Nisha; Janss, Luc; Zaalberg, Roos Marina; Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes.
In this paper we present the results of a genome-wide association study to identify significant genes that contribute to genetic variation in abundant milk fatty acids (FAs) C14:0 and C16:0 with considering lactation stage effect. FA composition phenotypes were measured using Application Note 64 (FOSS) and were available on 24,661 milk samples from 3,213 Danish Holstein cows. Association mapping analyses was performed using a Bayesian Variable Selection method. Results showed, in total 21 significant SNPs were detected for C14:0 and 18 significant SNPs were detected for C16:0 that are significant in changing over lactation stage for abundant milk FAs C14:0 and C16:0. For both milk FAs most significant SNPs influencing the slope of the lactation curve were...

Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Munk, Arne.
Litteraturen viser...

Detailed milk fatty acid profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population Organic Eprints
Poulsen, Nina Aagaard; Hein, Lisa; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Larsen, L.B.; Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes.
Abstract Milk fatty acid (FA) composition can be manipulated through feeding, and especially effects of grazing have been shown to promote a healthier milk FA profile due to increasing contents of beneficial FAs, like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3, the main n3 FA in milk). In addition to diet-based manipulations, selective breeding for specific FA could also be a strategy for altering the FA profile as milk FA display low to moderate heritabilites (0.07-0.34 in Danish Holstein). Since 2015, milk samples from all Danish dairy cows under yield control have been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy. The FOSS Application Note 64 has subsequently been used to predict content of seven FA groups (short-chain FA (SCFA),...

Detailed milk fatty acid profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population Organic Eprints
Hein, Lisa; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Larsen, Lotte Bach; Demirovic, Dino; Warnecke, Solveig; Nielsen, Niels Henning; Munk, Arne; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Pedersen, Jørn; Kargo, Morten.
The fatty acid (FA) composition of bovine milk may be related to human health and technological properties of dairy products. The FA composition can be altered both through management and breeding. Large scale FA profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population has now been implemented for more than a year. For the first time access to millions of FA observations across an entire dairy population enables in depth analysis of the factors affecting the FA profile of milk. This was the aim of this study. For 12 months more than 3.5 million milk samples from four Danish dairy breeds had been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy and application of FOSS Application Note 64 for predicting content of seven FA groups and four individual FA. The results showed...

Genetic analysis of predicted fatty acid profiles of milk from Danish Holstein and Danish Jersey cattle populations Organic Eprints
Hein, Lisa; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes.
The objective of this study was to assess the genetic variability of the detailed fatty acid (FA) profiles of Danish Holstein (DH) and Danish Jersey (DJ) cattle populations. We estimated genetic parameters for 11 FA or groups of FA in milk samples from the Danish milk control system between May 2015 and October 2016. Concentrations of different FA and FA groups in milk samples were measured by mid-infrared spectroscopy. Data used for parameter estimation were from 132,732 first-parity DH cows and 21,966 first-parity DJ cows. We found the highest heritabilities for test day measurements in both populations for short-chain FA (DH = 0.16; DJ = 0.16) and C16:0 (DH = 0.14; DJ = 0.16). In DH, the highest heritabilities were also found for saturated FA and...

The fatty acid profile of the milk is measured on all cows in Denmark Organic Eprints
Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Kargo, Morten; Munk, Arne.
The fatty acid profile of the milk is measured on all cows in Denmark The GUDP financed project SOBcows has in collaboration with RYK (Registration and Milk recording) collected a detailed fatty acid profile on all the cows, which are in the Danish milk recording system. In the past 16 months during 2015 and 2016, we have collected approximately 3.5 million milk samples. The samples were analyzed with the Foss application note 64, which registers 11 fatty acids or fatty acid groups. It is the first time that the milk fat from so many cows is registered in such detail. The data can be used to exploit the possibilities for genetic selection and feeding strategies to change the fatty acid profile in the milk into a desired direction. The initial...
