Examining Students’ Perceptions of Globalization and Study Abroad Programs at HBCUs AgEcon
Walker, Stevon; Bukenya, James O.; Thomas, Terrence.
The objective in this paper is to explore students’ perceptions of globalization and study abroad programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Recent statistics reveal that in spite of the current growth in the number of US students receiving academic credit for their overseas academic experience, less than one percent of undergraduate minority students participate in a study abroad program during their degree program. The analysis is based on survey questionnaires administered to 263 undergraduate minority students at Alabama A&M University. The questionnaire contained questions related to respondents’ demographic characteristics and likert-scale questions pertaining to students’ perceptions of globalization and studying abroad...

Financial Feasibility of Simultaneous Production of Pine Sawlogs, Forage, and Meat Goats on Small Farms in Alabama: A Preliminary Analysis AgEcon
Broughton, Brandi; Bukenya, James O..
Small and limited resource farmers and landowners in the Alabama Black Belt region face many challenges as they seek to make their farms and forestlands profitable, productive and environmentally sustainable. A host of problems—farmland conversion, urbanization pressures, reductions in water quality and availability, soil erosion, irregular cash flows, and increased government regulation—make managing family farms or forestland a difficult task. In response to these challenges, many farmers and landowners are considering agroforestry as an opportunity to increase land productivity and to improve their cash flows by combining income from agriculture, forestry, and animal production on the same piece of land. The objective in this paper was to conduct...

Consumer Purchasing Behaviors and Attitudes toward Shopping at Public Markets AgEcon
Bukenya, James O.; Mukiibi, Michael L.; Molnar, Joseph J.; Siaway, Arthur T..
This paper identifies and empirically evaluates factors that explain the variations in consumers’ attitudes toward shopping at farmers markets in general and public markets in particular. The analysis draws on data from a telephone survey conducted in Jefferson County, Alabama. Logit model results point to several factors that seem to be strongly correlated with consumer purchasing behaviors and attitudes toward shopping at public markets, including income, education, age of household head, household size, and price and quality of produce. The insights gained from the study should help farmers increase the profitability of their operations and improve the likelihood that they will continue farming.

ANALYSIS OF RURAL QUALITY OF LIFE AND HEALTH: A SPATIAL APPROACH AgEcon
Bukenya, James O.; Gebremedhin, Tesfa G.; Schaeffer, Peter V..
This paper examines the relationship between quality of life, health and several socioeconomic variables. The analysis utilizes empirical data obtained from a survey questionnaire administered on a random sample of over 2000 residents in twenty-one counties in West Virginia, and spatial data obtained by geocoding the survey respondents' addressees. Quality of life is measured by a three-point categorical measure of overall satisfaction and an ordered probit model is used to examine the relationships. The empirical results are consistent with the theoretical predictions and indicate, for instance, that quality of life satisfaction increases with income and education while it decreases with unemployment.

DETERMINANTS OF CONSUMER ATTITUDES AND PURCHASE INTENTIONS WITH REGARD TO GM FOODS AgEcon
Bukenya, James O.; Wright, Natasha R..
Consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) products has become a vital factor in determining how prosperous the markets for GM products will be in the future. This phenomenon creates increased interest in understanding consumer attitudes and purchase intentions with regard to GM foods. Thus, this paper presents results based on a contingent valuation questionnaire designed to assess consumer knowledge, awareness and willingness to purchase GM-tomatoes in Huntsville metropolitan area, Alabama. The results suggest that attitudes and purchase decisions concerning GM foods are generally negative, highly complex and are based on several factors.

The Impact of Cholesterol Information on Meat Demand: Application of an Updated Cholesterol Index AgEcon
Adhikari, Murali; Paudel, Laxmi; Houston, Jack E.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Bukenya, James O..
We estimate an almost ideal-demand system (AIDS) to assess the impacts of cholesterol information on the market demand of meats in the U.S. Our study indicates a significant negative impact of cholesterol information on the market demand of beef and pork and a significant positive influence on chicken demand. The study further demonstrated that the flow of carbohydrate information lessened the magnitude of cholesterol health information elasticities.

LAND TENURE AND SOCIOECONOMIC INTERACTIONS AgEcon
Ssemambo, James; Bukenya, James O.; Mojica, Maribel N..
The study analyzed the determinants of land tenure insecurity in Uganda using survey data collected by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) during the Policies for Improved Land Management Project in Uganda, 1999-2001. The survey included a sample of 1322 farm households randomly selected and interviewed using a formal questionnaire. The analysis revealed that tenure category, number of households in the village involved in disputes outside the village, and the number of households in the village who lost land as a result of a dispute over land were significant factors affecting tenure insecurity.

CAUSES AND TRENDS OF LAND CONVERSION: A STUDY OF URBANIZATION IN NORTH ALABAMA AgEcon
Mojica, Maribel N.; Bukenya, James O..
Alabama is experiencing significant pressure to convert agricultural land to urban uses. The dominant pattern of urbanization has been the conversion of agricultural land to residential and commercial uses. This paper examined regional, state, and local land use trends and developed a tool for identifying the determinants and impacts of past and proposed land use change in north Alabama using selected cities and towns in Madison County.

CONSUMER PURCHASING BEHAVIORS AND ATTITUDES TOWARD SHOPPING AT PUBLIC MARKETS IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA AgEcon
Mukiibi, Michael L.; Bukenya, James O.; Molnar, Joseph J.; Siaway, Arthur T.; Rigdon, L..
The purpose of this study was to obtain information that could help farmers increase the profitability of their operations and improve the likelihood that they would continue farming. The specific objective was to empirically evaluate which socio-demographic characteristics and purchasing behaviors encourage consumers to patronize farmers markets, in general and public markets, in particular. Data was drawn from telephone survey responses from 502 potential food shoppers in Alabama. Logit model results point to several factors that seem to be strongly correlated with consumer purchasing behaviors and attitudes toward shopping at public markets, including income, education, age of household head, household size, price and quality of produce.

Do fluctuations in wine stocks affect wine prices? AgEcon
Bukenya, James O.; Labys, Walter C..
Globalization and the expansion of world wine trade have caused a wine boom that together with agricultural subsidies have made fluctuations in wine inventories a more critical issue. In the case of domestic and international wine markets, little is known about intertemporal inventory adjustments and how they relate to prices. We investigate possible dynamic relations between these variables in a time series context, so as to better understand how wine producers and traders can face growing price and financial volatility. Countries for whom meaningful data series could be constructed include: Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States. The study begins by examining the empirical evidence on inventories in these markets and...

PRODUCERS’' WILLINGNESS TO ADOPT HACCP PRINCIPLES IN THE GOAT MEAT INDUSTRY AgEcon
Nettles, Latisha; Bukenya, James O..
The major food safety issue now confronting federal policymakers is making sure that consumers can purchase foods acceptably free of microbial contaminants and of hazardous chemicals – including pesticide residues, natural toxins, environmental contaminants, animal drugs, or harmful additives. While these concerns are not new, new dimensions to the problems continually challenge regulators. This paper estimates goat producers’' willingness-to-adopt HACCP systems to reduce microbial pathogen. Data used are drawn from a food safety education project for small ruminant producers funded by the USDA Food Safety Inspection Services (FSIS). The data are collected using contingent valuation survey administered among small ruminant producers in Alabama and...

The Impact of Agricultural Growth on Rural Non-Farm Incomes and Employment in Alabama AgEcon
Brazil, LaTravis; Bukenya, James O..
The rural nonfarm economy is the backbone of the economy of numerous small towns scattered throughout the Black Belt region, as well as the primary source of income and employment. Seen in this light, the rural nonfarm economy will play a key role in determining future prospects for employment growth and poverty alleviation in the Alabama Black Belt region. The objective in this paper therefore is to examine the importance of rural-urban growth linkages with a focus on the Black Belt region and estimate agricultural growth multipliers. The analysis uses cross-section data to estimate econometrically the indirect rural employment and income generated by agricultural growth. Two major sections address the study objective. The first examines the importance,...

Income Convergence in the South: Myth or Reality? AgEcon
Gyawali, Buddhi Raj; Banerjee, Swagata (Ban); Hill, Anquinette; Bukenya, James O..
County-level data for 11 southern states for 1980 and 2000 are used to examine income convergence. Ordinary least squares regression of logarithmic difference on average per capita income in 1980 demonstrated conditional income convergence with higher income changes in counties with smaller initial populations, smaller changes in African Americans, employment, education, age structure, travel time to work, or dependent age populations. The estimated rate of income convergence was 3.82% per year.
