Organic Farming in Cornwall: Results of the 2002 Farmer Survey Organic Eprints
Roderick, Stephen; Burke, Jean.
A detailed survey of organic farming in Cornwall was completed duing the period August 2002 to February 2003. One of the main objectives of the survey was to describe current practices and constraints to organic production so as to aid the Organic Studies Centre in developing a research and training strategy that meets the needs of Cornish organic farmers. all 130 registered producer members of the Soil Association Certification Ltd (SACert) and Organic Farmers anf Growers Ltd (OF&G) were contacted. Of these, 120 were farming and 119 were interviewed. Composting case study Organic Eprints
Burke, Jean; Walsh, Phil.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Garden waste delivered by the public to a recycling centre is stockpiled, shredded and delivered to the on-farm composting site. The material is forced, together with aeration pipes into 60 metre long EcoPods using specialist machinery. The temperatures achieved during the composting process are fully monitored and controlled using a forced aeration system. The composting site operates under a waste management licence exemption and has temporary planning approval. Concerns raised about the site include increased heavy traffic, leachate, noise nuisance, birds and vermin, odours, dust and bio-aerosols harmful to health. Local residents remain intolerant of the composting system. The...

Case study: Duchy College Organic Studies Centre Organic Eprints
Burke, Jean; Le Grice, Phil.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Coswinsawsin Organic Demonstration Farm supports a stockless vegetable and cereal rotation and achieved organic status in January 2001. Over 18 months 430 people attended 18 organic farming events. Work included trials and demonstration plots, monitoring of small mammal and bird populations and a green waste composting project which are ongoing. £972,199 Objective 1 funding was awarded to expand activity across all sectors of production and establish the Organic Studies Centre at Duchy College. The project will link organic research to demonstration, technology transfer and training. The emphasis will be on farmer participation and research will be taken onto commercial farms. 82% of...

Small mammal survey on agricultural land during conversion and into full organic production Organic Eprints
Burke, Jean; Taylor, Nick.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Loss of food and suitable habitat due to modern intensive farming and the decline of mixed farming systems has lead to a reduction in numbers of small mammals on farmland in the UK. Organic production systems are believed to encourage biodiversity. Small mammal surveys were carried out on Coswinsawsin Organic Demonstration Farm in November 1999, April and November 2000 and October 2001. 50 Longworth traps were set in pairs at 5 metre intervals along a hedgerow and checked morning and evening for three days. Trapped mammals were identified, weighed and with the exception of shrews, marked by a small fur clip before release. The wood mouse was the most prevalent species trapped. Other...
