The Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is an invasive pest in Europe and North America, infesting various soft-skinned fruits. Because D. suzukii attacks ripening fruits shortly before harvest, only insecticides with short pre-harvest intervals can be applied. Alternatively, kaolin, lime and rock dusts are non-toxic to non-target organisms, but the whitish coating on fruits potentially deters oviposition of D. suzukii. Therefore, we tested oviposition deterrence and insecticidal effects of such substances. Female D.suzukii flies were exposed to treated blueberries under laboratory conditions for 24 hours. Kaolin, clinoptilolite, clinoptilolite + Heliosol (pine-oil based wetting agent) and calcium carbonate significantly reduced oviposition,... |

Perennial flower strips improve the effectiveness of biological pest control by predators and parasitoids in fruit production. The guide presents results from the European EcoOrchard project and other studies, explains how the flower strips function, introduces suitable plants and describes step by step the procedure for planting and maintenance. The information is supplemented by information on the costs and possible disadvantages of the flowering strips. |

The spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is a newly introduced pest of soft fruits, stone fruits and grapes in Europe. Various trap types are used for monitoring and mass trapping of this pest. In Switzerland, “Gasser-Becherfalle” with a white lid and a liquid wine-vinegar based attractant is the most widely used trap type for both purposes. In order to improve efficiency of monitoring and mass trapping, two different commercially available trap models (red and white lid), as well as a standard bait supplemented with different acetone concentrations were compared in laboratory and field experiments. In addition, D.suzukii populations were monitored in different habitats in order to understand annual migration patterns and assess optimal trapping... |

Orchards, as intensive cropping systems, often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies for pest control. The implementation of agri-environmental schemes, such as flower strips, could enhance biological control. We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species. In the second and third year after sowing, plant diversity and ground cover between flower strips (FS) in the drive alleys and the spontaneous orchard vegetation in control plots (Cont) were compared in 19 experimental blocks of eight organic apple orchards in six European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of FS was on average 43% higher than in Cont. Multivariate... |

Drosophila suzukii is a major pest of soft fruits. Baited traps are widely used for monitoring and mass trapping: different commercial baits, different recipes for home-made baits as well as several literature references on attractive compounds are available. In a series of 15 laboratory experiments we compared the attractiveness of different baits for D. suzukii: the commercially available Dros’attract (Biobest Belgium NV) and the Gasser-bait (Biologische Becherfalle für die Kirschessigfliege Drosophila suzukii; Riga AG), a 4-Component-attractant (Cha et al., 2013) and a self-made wine-vinegar-bait (50 % water, 40 % apple cider vinegar, 10 % red wine, 0.05 % acetone, 0.0125 % soap). Furthermore, we tested if different bait amendments (β-Cyclocitral,... |
