Tidal level influence on the spawning process of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) on a rocky shore (Bay of Biscay). ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Mahias, Jeremy; Castets, Virginie; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is an important exploited resource on the Mediterranean coast and has been the subject of much research. In the Bay of Biscay, the situation is different, as some studies have been conducted on the Spanish Basque coast but few on the French part of that coast. However, the Basque coast offers favourable conditions for the development of this species, and its exploitation could be a source of potential diversification for fishermen, especially in the context of difficulties with some other resources. At the request of the managers of this coastal resource, a study was undertaken on sea urchins to improve knowledge of this stock, particularly about its biological characteristics. In this work, assessment consisted of...

Update of striped red mullet abundance indices from professional fishing data (2016-2018) ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noëlle.
The ROMELIGO project included a proposal of abundance indicators for mur-west stock using professional fishing data. The methodolgy is based on the selection of samples of representative vessels grouped in clusters with the same technical characteristics, taking into account their LPUE for specifed period and area. The analysis was conducted on an historical dataset from 2005 to 2015. To be able to update it, conditional decision trees were used to find rules to assign any new vessels to one of the predefined OTB or GNS clusters. Then, the trends of LPUE on the overall period were considered. For OTB, the number of uses shows little variation during the period. In recent years, the LPUEs calculated for the Bay of Biscay show low levels compared to the...

Determination of diet in Manila clams by spatial analysis of stable isotopes ArchiMer
Dang, C.; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Savoye, N.; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Martinez, P.; Millaret, C.; Haure, Joel; De Montaudouin, X..
Spatial changes in the dietary regime of Ruditapes philippinarum from intertidal sediments of Arcachon Bay were depicted by analyzing stable isotope ratios in both its adductor muscles and potential trophic sources. Manila clams were collected from 50 sites in May to June 2006. Dietary reconstruction was based on the IsoSource mixing model, considering trophic enrichments of 3.5%. for carbon and 3.0%. for nitrogen, which were determined experimentally. delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, respectively, averaged -28.2 and 5.2 parts per thousand for riverine particulate organic matter (POM), -20.6 and 4.7 parts per thousand for inner bay phytoplankton, -21.0 and 5.6%. for outer bay phytoplankton, -16.8 and 4.8 parts per thousand. for microphytobenthos, -18.4...

Brown muscle disease (BMD), an emergent pathology affecting Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Dang, C; De Montaudouin, X; Gonzalez, P; Mesmer Duldons, N; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
We describe an emerging pathology, brown muscle disease (BMD), which specifically affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (France). BMD induces a transformation of the posterior adductor muscle, which becomes infused by conchiolin and calcified, reducing the ability of clams to bury. The disease affects both types of muscular tissue, with striated muscle becoming affected to a higher degree than smooth muscle. Two indices were created to quantify the symptoms: the Muscle Print Index, used for empty and live shells, and the Final Disease Index, utilized for live clams only. Histological sections were made and observed under light microscopy to examine the muscular damage and to investigate a causal agent. Sections revealed an...

Spatio-temporal patterns of perkinsosis in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Trumbic, Zeljka.
Pathogens belonging to the genus Perkinsus infect many bivalve molluscan species around the world, including the Manila clam Ruditapes phihppinarum. We investigated the spatial distribution of this parasite at 34 stations throughout Arcachon Bay (SW France). Prevalence of perkinsosis was 93% and mean infection abundance was 96 x 10(3) cells g(-1) wet gill. Lowest mean abundances were found close to the Leyre River mouth and a significant negative correlation was observed between mean abundance and salinity. Perkinsosis was rare at the oceanic site where salinities and other environmental parameters were stable. A second aim of this study was to survey perkinsosis during annual cycles at 4 sites within Arcachon Bay. Prevalence and intensities (+/-SE) of the...

Assessment of the impact of a wastewater treatment process including Advanced Oxidation Technique on environment using chemical and biological indicators ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Pigot, Thierry; Paulin, Thomas; Bru, Noëlle; Sanchez, Florence; Marticorena, Julien; Lanceleur, Laurent; Gonzalez, Patrice; Daffe, Guillemine.
In a context of several directives for transitional and coastal waters masses (Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Bathing Water Directive), the good ecological status of water but also conservation of marine ecosystem should be quickly achieved. The Basque coastline (SE of the Bay of Biscay) is subject to strong human pressures with a high density of population over the year, and especially during the summer with tourist activities. It generates nutrient discharge, water and sediment pollution and impacts the quality of the marine environment. Such pressure and the way to reduce its impacts are the main concerns of authorities Locally, in order to improve wastewater treatment process, an alternative technical solution is...

A methodology based on data filtering to identify reference fleets to account for the abundance of fish species: Application to the Striped red mullet (Mullus surmulletus) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noëlle; Dutertre, Marie-adèle; Saguet, Cassandre.
For data-limited stocks (DLS), professional fishing data can be used as a potential source of information, especially in the absence of appropriate scientific survey, to understand abundance evolution under realistic hypothesis on resource catchability. This work focuses on a data-filtering approach, the selected fishing effort must reflect vessel activity that is least dependent on their technical characteristics and as stable as possible over time. The variable of interest is landing by fishing sequence (landing for a given gear, gear mesh, day and ICES statistical rectangle) called LPUE. In order to account for the abundance of the species, it was necessary to consider the discards. The method thus proceeds in 4 steps: (i) focus on LPUE variability and...

The Manila clam population in Arcachon Bay (SW France): Can it be kept sustainable? ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Gam, Meriame; Paroissin, Christian; Bru, Noelle; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
The venerid clam Ruditapes philippinarum is the most prominent suspension-feeding bivalve inhabiting muddy intertidal seagrass beds in Arcachon Bay (SW France). It is exploited by fishermen, and Arcachon Bay ranks number one in France in terms of production and total biomass of this species. Previous studies revealed a decrease in the standing stock of R. philippinarum since 2003 and unbalanced length-frequency distributions with a lack of juveniles and of adults >40 mm. Consequently, the population dynamics of this bivalve were studied at four intertidal sites and one oceanic site in Arcachon Bay. As clam size structure did not allow classical dynamics computations. field monitoring was coupled with field experiments (tagging-recapture) over two years....

Improvement of the fishery knowledge of striped red mullet of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Leaute, Jean-pierre.
Striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) belongs to the species for which individualization of stocks is advanced by ICES in western Europe for areas including the Bay of Biscay and the areas bordering the Iberian peninsula. Since 2012, ICES has provided recommendations with regards to this stock. These recommendations are given for two years and are based on an approach adopted by ICES in 2012 in the case of insufficient data for an analytical evaluation (Data Limited Stocks, DLS). For 2013 and 2014, ICES advice consisted in a 20% reduction in catches (average of the last 3 years:- 2009-2011) as a precautionary measure. Since that, no new advice has been formulated, the advice remains the same. Considering the impacts of such measurements on the French...

Asari clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in France: history of an exotic species 1972 – 2015 ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, Xavier; Arzul, Isabelle; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Khayati, Alice; Labrousse, Jean-michel; Lafitte, Céline; Paillard, Christine; Soudant, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.
In 1972, France underwent an oyster (Crassostrea angulata) crisis and urgently needed to diversify its aquaculture. Thus, Asari clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) was introduced at that time for aquaculture purpose, concomitantly with the introduction of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). All Asari clam adults and spat originated from the same area (Puget Sound, WA, USA). After a promising start and the implementation of a national Research & Development program, Asari clam culture rapidly faced a series of concomitant handicaps: firstly, in spite the fact that cultural practices were optimized and locking points addressed, leasing ground availability was limited during the 1980s’ due to certain reluctance from oyster farmers to share their leases and/or...

Campagne d'évaluation du stock de palourdes du bassin d'Arcachon - Année 2006 ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Duclercq, Benoit; Morandeau, Gilles.
Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species...

The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is a fish species which inhabits marine environments in the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic regions. This is an important species from an ecological, economic and conservation perspective, however critical information on its population genetic structure is lacking. Most samples were obtained from the Mediterranean Sea (17 sites) with an emphasis around Corsica (5 sites), plus one Atlantic Ocean site. This provided an opportunity to examine genetic structuring at local and broader scales to provide science based data for the management of fishing stocks in the region. Two mitochondrial regions were examined (D-loop and COI) along with eight microsatellite loci. The COI data was combined with publicly available...

Caractéristiques des petites pêches côtières et estuariennes de la côte atlantique du sud de l'Europe. ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
The European contract PECOSUDE (Small inshore fisheries of the south of Europe) accepted in 2000 for 2 years concerns French partners (IFREMER, GEOLITTOMER and CEMAGREF), Spanish (AZTI, UPV and IEO) and Portuguese (IPIMAR). For the renegotiation of the PCP in 2002, the aim is to assess the inshore and estuarian fisheries from the Loire to the Portugal. Three levels of study are considered : halieutics (data 1999), socio-economy and marketing (in progress). Frequentation of 12 miles area for France and continental shelf for northern Spain and Portugal, as well as the fishing period lower than 96 hours was determined as the definition of this fishery for the study

Asari (= Manila) clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is the second bivalve mollusc in terms of production in the world and, in many coastal areas, can beget important socio-economic issues. In Europe, this species was introduced after 1973. In Arcachon Bay, after a decade of aquaculture attempt, Asari clam rapidly constituted neo-naturalized population which is now fished. However, recent studies emphasized the decline of population and individual performances. In the framework of a national project (REPAMEP), some elements of fitness, stressors and responses in Arcachon bay were measured and compared to international data (41 publications, 9 countries). The condition index (CI=flesh weight/shell weight) was the lowest among all compared sites. Variation in...
