Since 1998, the European Biocidal Products Directive (BPD; 98/8/EC), applied to 23 product types (PT) for specific uses, including PT 21 the « antifouling products », regulates biocidal products before they are placed on the market. On the one hand, the efficacy of active substances and their formulations must be demonstrated for their specific employment ; on the other hand their non impact on workers neither users and environment must be proved and specifically against non target species. Standard protocols for the assessment of efficacy or ecotoxicity of antifouling substances are proposed within the framework of the Ecopaint and Paintclean projects which are founded by the french industry Ministery and labellised by the “Pôle Mer” (Paca and... |

The ontogenic variations of nitrogen and carbon stable isotopic signatures (delta N-15 and delta C-13) were investigated in two spider crab (Maja brachydactyla) populations inhabiting in different biotopes of Western Europe. The Iroise Sea population is localized in Western Brittany and characterized by a seasonal migration occurring on a large bathymetric and habitat gradient while the Seine Bay population, in the Eastern English Channel, remains in a more homogeneous environment during its migration. In the Iroise Sea population, delta C-13 Values increased significantly both with body size and age, revealing a shift towards "benthic-component" prey with spider crab growth. On the contrary, neither body size nor ageing gave rise to a significant trophic... |

We used existing bathymetric data to study the macrofauna of a geophysical pockmark field restricted to a benthic habitat engineered by the tubiculous amphipod Haploops nirae in South Brittany (France). Stations inside and outside pockmarks of different morphometric characteristics (location, size, depression depth) were sampled for macrofauna and environmental parameters (sediment characteristics, organic matter, chl a, hydrogen sulfide and methane concentrations). Diversity indices showed higher species richness inside pockmarks, especially for species with medium to high abundances. Most sediment cores showed low methane but high hydrogen sulfide concentrations. We hypothesised that after eruption, the remaining residual methane from pockmark sediments... |

Underwater imagery is increasingly used as an effective and repeatable method to monitor benthic ecosystems. Nevertheless, extracting ecologically relevant information from a large amount of raw images remains a time-consuming and somewhat laborious challenge. Thus, underwater imagery processing needs to strike a compromise between time-efficient image annotation and accuracy in quantifying benthic community composition. Designing and implementing robust image sampling and image annotation protocols are therefore critical to rationally address these trade-offs between ecological accuracy and processing time. The aim of this study was to develop and to optimize a reliable image scoring strategy based on the point count method using imagery data acquired on... |

Since 1973, spat collection bas been conducted by IFREMER in the bay of Brest. This collection aimed at providing juveniles of Pecten maximus (1973-77) and then Chlamys varia(1977-87) in order to improve the management of the fishing grounds of the two species. Since 1982, the efforts have been focussed on the P. maximus spat production through the hatchery/nursery systems and the intermediate culture. Juveniles are seeded above a minimum size to create an additional population. In parallel, the levels of spat yied/collector have been followed as a pre-recruit index. At present time, there is no increase of spat collection during 1985-1990. Moreover, the results rise up the question of water quality in the bay of Brest for this group apparently very... |

In 2000 Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a monitoring strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in order to assess the aftermath of the “Erika” oil spill which took place in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge on coastal benthic habitats, as well as to develop a monitoring tool that detects changes at various spatial and temporal scales. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters using a combination of geoacoustic marine systems together with ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations. Due to the extended area, the overlap of soft and rocky bottoms, and contrasting hydrological... |

Pearl oysters are farmed in oligotrophic tropical atoll lagoons where planktonic communities are dominated by production from cyanobacteria smaller than 2 pm. Paradoxically, the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera only retains particles larger than 2 Pm. In this study, we assess the relative contribution of hetero/mixotrophic microbiota to the available planktonic resource. In Takapoto Atoll, picocyanobacteria are the dominant biomass (20 mug C l(-1)). The carbon biomass of ciliates and dinoflagellates ranges from 1 to 24 and 0.5 to 5 mug C l(-1) respectively, with a mean of 6 mug C l(-1) for ciliates and 2 mug C l(-1) for dinoflagellates. The possible retention by P. margaritifera on a natural protist suspension was investigated. Due to its high clearance... |

Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild... |
