Sertularia vervoorti (Hydrozoa: Sertulariidae), an undescribed species of hydroid from Brazil Naturalis
Migotto, A.E.; Calder, D.R..
An account is given of Sertularia vervoorti spec. nov., a small leptothecate species collected in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil. Specimens were found on brown algae, collected at depths of 15-20 m on the inner continental shelf off Espírito Santo state. This hydroid resembles Sertularia tumida Allman, 1877, S. linealis Warren, 1908, and S. longa Millard, 1958, but differs from these and other species of the genus in having an unusual bulge around the hydrothecal wall just distal to its insertion with the hydrocaulus. The colony form of S. vervoorti is more compact than in these species, and gonothecae are annulated rather than smooth as in S. linealis and S. longa.

Some hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, in the North Atlantic Ocean Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Vervoort, W..
An account is given of some hydroids from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, collected during dives of submersibles "Nautile" (operated by IFREMER, France) and "Alvin" (operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U.S.A). The specimens came from three main sectors of the ridge: 15 species from localities near hydrothermal fields (540-1727 m) SW of the Azores, five species from an area (2565-3902 m) west of the Cape Verde Islands near Researcher Ridge, and one species from a site (4529-4578 m) within the Vema Fracture zone west of Guinea Bissau. In all, 21 species were distinguished, comprising two anthoathecates and 19 leptothecates. The families Lafoeidae and Sertulariidae were best represented, with six and four species respectively. Halecium profundum spec....

Lectotype designations of new species of hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa), described by C.M. Fraser, from Allan Hancock Pacific and Caribbean Sea Expeditions Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Vervoort, W.; Hochberg, F.G..
Hydroids of the Allan Hancock Pacific Expeditions, and those of the Allan Hancock Caribbean Sea Expedition, were examined by Charles McLean Fraser in a series of reports published between 1938 and 1948. A total of 159 new nominal species was described from material collected in the eastern Pacific between Peru and southern British Columbia. Accounts of an additional five nominal species were based on specimens from the southern Caribbean Sea. No valid holotypes were designated in accordance with provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature for any of these taxa. The purpose of this report is to establish an objective standard for each species, and to promote stability of nomenclature in Hydrozoa, by designating lectotypes for these taxa,...

Dry season distribution of hydroids in a small tropical estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Maÿal, E.M..
Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio...
