Improving Agriculture Students' Understanding of Global Production Systems through Distance Learning AgEcon
Bernardo, Daniel J.; Cameron, Donald; Conforte, Daniel; Sorokin, Pavel.
Globalization is a fundamental force currently shaping agricultural sector throughout the world. To make sound decisions in a globalised economy, agricultural producers and agribusiness managers must have a high level of understanding of the international dimensions of their industry. To address this need, we are developing a course aimed at helping agricultural students better understand the managerial environment faced by producers worldwide. This course will provide students an opportunity to learn about agricultural production, and the context in which it occurs, by analyzing real-world farm case studies in various countries on four continents in both hemispheres of the globe. Eight case studies are being developed to exemplify the production and...

Participative Approaches to Enhance Adoption of Fasciolosis Control Strategies in Cattle, in Yogya-Karta Province, Indonesia AgEcon
Martindah, Eny; Cameron, Donald; Frank, Bruce.
Fasciolosis is a widespread, significant, endemic problem in cattle in rice-growing areas of Indonesia. Its effects are usually sub-clinical so it remains largely unrecognised by farmers and extensionists. Indonesian and Australian parasitologists have developed a suite of control strategies. Initial attempts to promote these strategies through Transfer of Technology (TOT) approaches achieved increased awareness, but little lasting change in farmer practices was evident 4 years later. This paper reports on the process, and early promising results from, an initiative to trial a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology to stimulate an extension process whose outcome is effective, sustainable fasciolosis control in Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. In...

Improving Living Standards of Small Producers in Lombok Indonesia: Entrepreneurship Can Be the Key AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Cameron, Donald; Russell, Iean W..
There were indications of failure of Indonesia's agricultural credit program in terms of its inability to increase agricultural production, farmers' income, and repayment level. This paper analyses the impact of credit provision on farming activities and proposes strategies for improving livelihood of agricultural producers in Lombok, Indonesia. The analysis is based on two periods of survey conducted in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with farmers who had made use of government or other sources of agricultural...

Research with Subsistence Farmers: Lessons from the Edge AgEcon
Berhanu, Abeje; Cameron, Donald; Coutts, Jeff.
The paper highlights recent fieldwork experiences among subsistence farmers in north-central Ethiopia. It begins by describing two interrelated aspects of subsistence farmer-oriented research. These are planning the fieldwork and increasing farmer response. It is noted that activities relating to each of these two have been mainly influenced by two conventional assumptions: one is the view that farmers will not refuse to provide free information, and the other is the notion that the "village" provides the appropriate setting for gathering information. Challenges to both assumptions came in the wake of sustained fieldwork-focused interaction with subsistence farmers.

Measuring Impacts of an Holistic Farm Business Management Training Program AgEcon
Cameron, Donald; Chamala, Shankariah.
This paper reports on the development of 4 new instruments to measure impacts of an extension program on farming family participants. A case study approach within an action research framework incorporating qualitative and quantitative domains was adopted to explore the impact on Queensland farmers of FutureProfit, a farm business management extension program. Two of these new measures, Management Constructs Change index and Management Objectives Change index, provided evidence of statistically significant changes in participant beliefs about, and attitudes towards farm business management. Although highly correlated with each other, these changes were unrelated statistically to any of seven other commonly used biographical or psychometric indices employed,...

Factors Contributing to the Performance of Agricultural Credit in Lombok Indonesia AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Cameron, Donald; Russell, Iean W..
In Indonesia, national historical records show increasing agricultural credit provision by government, yet farmers seem to be unable to escape poverty. In addition, the repayment of credit has tended to be lower as years proceed. This paper analyses the performance of credit in terms of agricultural production, farmers' earnings, and credit repayment, and factors contributing to the performance. The analysis is based upon a survey conducted in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 farmers who had made use of...

Risk management strategies by Australian farmers: two case studies AgEcon
Nguyen, Nam C.; Wegener, Malcolm K.; Russell, Iean W.; Cameron, Donald; Coventry, David; Cooper, Ian M..
Australian farmers operate in one of the most risky farming environments in the world. They have to cope with numerous sources of risk including weather uncertainty, variable market prices, and institutional changes in their business management. This paper reports results from two case studies undertaken to examine the issues of farming risks and risk management strategies in Australia. The first case study found that unpredictable weather, financial risk, marketing risk, and personal risk were regarded as the major sources of risk among farmers in the Upper Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. The main risk management strategies used by farmers in that region included diversifying crop varieties, adopting minimum tillage farming practices, minimising the...

Acceptance and Repayment of Agricultural Credit in Lombok Indonesia - Farmer's Perspectives AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Russell, Iean W.; Cameron, Donald.
This paper analyzes farmer decisions regarding acceptance and repayment of agricultural credit in Lombok, Indonesia. A survey was conducted during July 2001- March 2002 in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 farmers who had made use of government or other sources of agricultural credit. Capital possession was found to be the starting point for farmers' decision-making in relation to credit use. As long as farmers had their own capital, they tended to avoid using credit, perceiving that credit from any source was...
