Organic agriculture can and should play an important role in solving future challenges in producing food. The low level of external inputs combined with knowledge on sustainablity minimizes environmental contamination and can help to produce more food for more people without negatively impacting our environment. Organic agriculture not only includes farming as a production practice but it also includes processing, trade and consumption. Nevertheless, Organic agriculture must always evolve to overcome emerging challenges. Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges. In 2010, a global discussion about Organic 3.0 was initiated to address current problems...

EFFECT OF LIVING MULCH ON PEST/BENEFICIAL INTERACTION Organic Eprints
Burgio, Giovanni; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Franc; Bavec, Martina; von Fragstein und Niemsdorff, Peter; Depalo, Laura; Lanzoni, Alberto; Canali, Stefano.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on pest/beneficial dynamics and to test the potential of living mulch on enhancing biological control against insect pests. The research, carried out in the frame of the InterVeg (Core Organic II) project, involved four European countries: Germany, Slovenia, Denmark and Italy. Three crops were tested: cauliflower, leek and artichoke. The preliminary results obtained in Italy on cauliflower, indicated that the living mulch did not affect the infestation of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae, showing no detrimental effect of this technique on pest dynamics. A very high level of parasitization against cabbage butterfly was detected either in the living mulch crop (88%) and in the sole one...

Can living mulches in intercropping systems reduce the potential nitrate leaching? Studies of organic cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) and leek (Allium porrum L.) production across European conditions Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Tittarelli, Fabio; von Fragstein, Peter; Bavec, Martina; Canali, Stefano; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
The effect of introduction strategy for living mulches (LMs) to reduce the potential nitrate leaching was investigated when grown with vegetables with high nitrogen (N) demand and low use efficiency in four European countries: Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Denmark over 2 yr. The plant N uptake and soil nitrate N content at harvest, in the autumn, and in the following spring were measured below open-pollinated and hybrid cultivars of cauliflower and leek crops. The cultivars performed differently over the 2 yr. In Italy and Slovenia, when LM of burr medic or white clover was broad sown (addition design ADD) at the same time as crop transplanting, the N uptake of crops was hampered without increasing the total aboveground N accumulation. Delaying LM sowing by...

Report on Italian Research in Organic Food and Farming (2000–2005) Organic Eprints
Puliga, Serenella; Marzetti, Annamaria; Canali, Stefano.
In Italy since the eighties, the scientific community opened a discussion on how to face many agricultural critical points, reconsidering old but renewed approaches to make agriculture more environment and consumer-friendly. In 1988 the first coordinated project on OF&F (Biological and integrated control of crop and forest pest and disease) was financed by MIPAF, involving 46 researchunits (research centres and universities). But it was only in the last decade that interest in organic farming really took off, when production methods continued to develop, along with consumers’ keen concern to be supplied with more wholesome, environment-friendly products. There was a major increase in the number of producers, and new initiatives got on the way for...

Soil quality of organically managed citrus orchards in the Mediterranean area. Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano.
Soil quality can be defined as the capacity of a soil to function, whilst maintaining the environmental quality and promoting plant and animal health. It also refers to the capability of soil to function at present and in the future for an indefinite period of time. Soil quality is a basic concept in the sustainable management of any agricultural system aimed at producing, avoiding or reducing negative effects on the environment, preserving resources and saving energy on a medium- or long-term basis and its assessment might be considered a means for the evaluation of the environmental sustainability of agricultural systems. A study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the contribution of the introduction of organic farming system to the environmental...

Soil quality comparison among organically and conventionally managed citrus orchards in Eastern Sicily (Italy) Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano; di Bartolomeo, Emanuela; Torrisi, Biagio.
The aim of this work was to compare soil fertility status of conventional and organic managed citrus orchards, using specific soil system descriptors. The research was carried out in a Mediterranean environment (Sicily region, Southern Italy), on Navelina and Tarocco orange orchards. Soil characteristics were analysed in 54 farms under both organic and conventional management. Farms were selected to obtain similar pairs (27) in the same environmental conditions. For each soil, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, mineral NO3-N and NH4-N were determined. In addition, in order to evaluate biological fertility status of soils, carbon mineralisation and nitrogen mineralisation in anaerobic conditions were studied. Soils humic fraction was at least...

Effect of different management strategies on soil quality of citrus orchards in Southern Italy Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano; Emanuela, Di Bartolomeo; Alessandra, Trinchera; Luigi, Nisini; Fabio, Tittarelli; Francesco, Intrigliolo; Giancarlo, Roccuzzo; Maria Luisa, Calabretta.
Twenty-six soil samples were collected from 13 paired orchards (organically vs. conventionally managed) homogeneous for age, rootstock and cultivars, belonging to the Eastern Sicily Organic Citrus farm Network. The soil quality was evaluated by chemical and biochemical indicators. The total organic C, humification parameters and isoelectric focusing of extracted organic matter were measured to quantify the size of relevant soil C pools. In addition, C turnover was evaluated by determining microbial C mineralization, C microbial biomass and by calculating the mineralization and metabolic quotient (qCO2). The results obtained demonstrated that organic citrus soils were characterized by a general increase in all the organic matter pools, which means a...

Il ruolo della fertirrigazione in agricoltura biologica. Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano.

There is a lack of results on the advantages and limitations of combining different crop diversification strategies both in time and space, which makes it difficult for famers and advisers to find relevant information for the transition towards more diversified cropping systems. A network of ten field experiments (diverIMPACTS project) was built across seven European countries, covering a range of pedo-climatic conditions and different farming systems: arable and vegetable systems under both conventional and organic management. Each field experiment tests one or several diversified cropping systems, which combine three diversification strategies with low input practices. These diversified cropping systems are compared to reference systems, which are less...

Can new organic cropping systems produce vegetables with lower use of resources and losses of nitrate? Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Hanne L.; Xie, Yue; Bavec, F.; von Fragstein, Peter; Campanelli, Gabriele; Ortolani, Livia; Canali, Stefano.
To secure a sustainable production of plant foods for the future, there is a need to develop new cropping systems. These systems should have reduced needs of external resources and reduced environmental impact, while product yields are maintained at high level. Therefore, field trials were performed in Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Denmark with the aim to study new organic cropping systems for production of vegetable crops; and the systems’ effect on labor and energy consumption and the risk of losing nitrate to the water environment. The cropping systems included an in-season living mulch to exploit ecosystem services by attracting beneficial insects, suppressing weeds, and taking up excess nitrogen during production of two high-value crops of leek and...

Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints
Ortolani, Livia; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Martina; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Bergmam, Astrid; Leteo, Fabrizio; Canali, Stefano.
This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Organic food and farming research in Italy: A review by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Policies (MIPAF) Organic Eprints
Puliga, Serenella; Marzetti, Annamaria; Canali, Stefano; Zecca, Francesco.
In Italy, as in other countries, Organic Food and Farming (OFF) research suffers from a very high fragmentation as it is carried out by many public research institutes, universities and private centres. In recent years, due to the increasing relevance of OFF within national rural development programmes, strong efforts have been addressed towards an improvement of the efficiency of the distribution of funds, the research system and the reorganization of its activities, and a reduction of overlapping initiatives. This paper presents projects and institutions currently working on OFF research in Italy, focusing on the available public financial instruments and the main projects funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry MIPAF. Most of the Italian...

Living mulch in vegetables Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano.
The video shows the findings of an INTERVEG project on the cultivation of vegetables in association with a living mulch (the living mulch is a cover crop intercropped with a cash crop). Pest control, weed and nutrient management have been compared for sole crops and for cash crops grown into a living mulch. Living mulch is a practice that has shown positive impact on all the factors under study. Some cash crops/living mulch combination work better than others, but in all cases farmers report that very useful insights have been obtained. As an advanced technique, it addresses more to experienced organic farmers, but when applied to small scale can be used also by newcomers.
