MoMAR-D: a technological challenge to monitor the dynamics of the Lucky Strike vent ecosystem ArchiMer
Colaco, Ana; Blandin, Jerome; Cannat, M.; Carval, Thierry; Chavagnac, V.; Connelly, D.; Fabian, M.; Ghiron, S.; Goslin, Jean; Miranda, J. M.; Reverdin, G.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Waldmann, C.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The MoMAR (monitoring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) project was initiated in 1998 by the InterRidge programme to promote and coordinate long-term multidisciplinary monitoring of hydrothermal vents at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The major objective of the project is to study vent ecosystem dynamics using a multidisciplinary approach from geophysics to microbiology over a period of a few decades. MoMAR-D is a demonstration project of MoMAR, partially funded by the European network of excellence ESONET (http://www.esonet-noe.org/). MoMAR-D aims to deploy and manage a multidisciplinary observing system at the Lucky Strike vent field for 1 year. This large hydrothermal field is located at the centre of one of the most volcanically active segments of the MAR. The...

Fe-Si Oxides Tracing the Ongoing Low-T° Hydrothermal Alteration of Exhumed Serpentinites at the Ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge ArchiMer
Karpoff, A. M.; Sauter, D.; Cannat, M.; Ulrich, M.; Manatschal, G..
On the smooth seafloor of exhumed mantle-rocks of the slow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge, the secondary oxide and carbonate mineralizations record specific chemical signatures of the alteration of serpentinites by low-temperature hydrothermal seawater-dominated fluids. The uncommon characteristics of Fe-oxides forming nodule cortex or thick encrustments are their high Si, low Mn contents, trace elements (e.g. Cr) and REE behavior. Oxides composition evolves through time. Associated to oxides, carbonates (aragonite, calcite, dolomite) characterize the matrix of young indurated serpentinite breccias found at ridge axis. Such mineralogical and geochemical sequences trace, as proxies, the ongoing mantle-exhumation and serpentinization process linked to the...

Magnetic signature of large exhumed mantle domains of the Southwest Indian Ridge - results from a deep-tow geophysical survey over 0 to 11 Ma old seafloor ArchiMer
Bronner, A.; Sauter, D.; Munschy, M.; Carlut, J.; Searle, R.; Cannat, M.; Manatschal, Gianreto.
We investigate the magnetic signature of ultramafic seafloor in the eastern part of the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). There, detachment faulting, continuous over 11 Myr, exhumed large areas of mantle-derived rocks. These exhumed mantle domains occur in the form of a smooth rounded topography with broad ridges locally covered by a thin highly discontinuous volcanic carapace. We present high-resolution data combining deep-tow magnetics, sidescan sonar images and dredged samples collected within two exhumed mantle domains between 62 degrees E and 65 degrees E. We show that, despite an ultra-slow spreading rate, volcanic areas within robust magmatic segments are characterized by well-defined seafloor spreading anomalies. By contrast, the exhumed mantle...

Tectonic structure, evolution, and the nature of oceanic core complexes and their detachment fault zones (13°20'N and 13°30'N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) ArchiMer

Microbathymetry data, in-situ observations, and sampling along the 13°20'N and 13°20'N oceanic core complexes (OCCs) reveal mechanisms of detachment fault denudation at the seafloor, links between tectonic extension and mass wasting, and expose the nature of corrugations, ubiquitous at OCCs. In the initial stages of detachment faulting and high angle fault scarps show extensive mass-wasting that reduces their slope. Flexural rotation further lowers scarp slope, hinders mass wasting, resulting in morphologically complex chaotic terrain between the breakaway and the denuded corrugated surface. Extension and drag along the fault plane uplifts a wedge of hangingwall material (apron). The detachment surface emerges along a continuous moat that sheds rocks and...

Steps proposed to resolve potential research conflicts at deep-sea hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Mullineaux, L.; Juniper, S. K.; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Cannat, M..
Biological researchers studying deep‐sea hydrothermal vents occasionally find themselves at odds with their colleagues. The main issue is the incompatibility of two types of investigations—some are aimed at understanding how vent systems function by monitoring them in an undisturbed state and others study processes by manipulating the system or collecting parts of it, or both. The research community could resolve this conflict, we believe, by embracing the concept of deep‐sea hydrothermal vent reserves and by adopting a fair and equitable process for establishing reserves and disseminating information about them. At the same time those who need to manipulate the system or collect specimens could work at nearby sites and share data and samples.

Recent volcanic events and the distribution of hydrothermal venting at the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Ondreas, Helene; Cannat, M.; Fouquet, Yves; Normand, Alain; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
We present new high-resolution bathymetry and backscatter data acquired in 2006 with the ROV Victor 6000 over the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. As long-term monitoring of the Lucky Strike area (MoMAR project) is being implemented, these new high-resolution data offer an unprecedented view of the distribution of hydrothermal edifices, eruptive facies, and small-scale tectonic features in the Lucky Strike vent field. We show that vents located in the NW and NE correspond with wide expanses of lumpy seafloor which we interpret as primarily made of broken chimneys and sulfide edifices. They are found above scarps with relief > 50 m or on associated mass wasting deposits. By contrast, the SE and SW vents correspond with small expanses...

Hydrothermal activity along the slow-spreading Lucky Strike ridge segment (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): Distribution, heatflux, and geological controls ArchiMer
Escartin, J.; Barreyre, T.; Cannat, M.; Garcia, R.; Gracias, N.; Deschamps, A.; Salocchi, A.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Ballu, V..
We have reviewed available visual information from the seafloor, and recently acquired microbathymetry for several traverses across the Lucky Strike segment, to evaluate the distribution of hydrothermal activity. We have identified a new on-axis site with diffuse flow, Ewan, and an active vent structure ∼1.2 km from the axis, Capelinhos. These sites are minor relative to the Main field, and our total heatflux estimate for all active sites (200–1200 MW) is only slightly higher than previously published estimates. We also identify fossil sites W of the main Lucky Strike field. A circular feature ∼200 m in diameter located on the flanks of a rifted off-axis central volcano is likely a large and inactive hydrothermal edifice, named Grunnus. We find no...

Effect of melt/mantle interactions on MORB chemistry at the easternmost Southwest Indian Ridge (61 to 67°E) ArchiMer
Paquet, M.; Cannat, M.; Brunelli, D.; Hamelin, C.; Humler, E..
The easternmost part of the Southwest Indian Ridge (61°-67°E) is an end-member of the global ridge system in terms of very low magma supply. As such, it is a good laboratory to investigate the effect of melt/mantle interactions on the composition of erupted basalts: for a given volume of erupted basaltic melt, the volume of reacted mantle is potentially greater than at more magmatically robust ridges. We analyzed major, trace element and isotopic compositions in three groups of rocks: plagioclase-bearing ultramafic and gabbroic rocks dredged in nearly amagmatic spreading corridors; basalts from the sparse volcanic cover of these corridors (“ultramafic seafloor basalts”); and basalts dredged from the intervening, more volcanically active domains (“volcanic...
