Consumers' attitudes toward ethical food: Evidence from social farming in Italy AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Gaito, Marco; Senni, Saverio.
Agriculture seems to be capable to foster rehabilitation, work integration and social inclusion of vulnerable people: persons with mental disabilities, people with burn out, long-term unemployed, individuals with an addiction history, and so on. "Social farms", i.e. farms that provide these kind of services, are present in several European countries and their number is growing. The emerging interest of an increasing number of consumers for the "ethical quality" of products suggests that the social functions of these farms could be remunerated, although partially, by the market. The paper discusses the issues mentioned above and focuses on some empirical evidence on consumers' beliefs and attitude about social farms' products. Data are collected through a...

Coordination Mechanisms along the Supply Chain: a Key-Factor for Competitiveness AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Galli, Francesca; Sorrentino, Alessandro.
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of relationships between stakeholders in the supply chain as a potential source of competitive advantage. In the case study, we focus on the wine industry in the Lazio Region (Italy). We observe a significant loss of competitiveness in this industry and we suggest that a higher level of communication and different coordination mechanisms among stakeholders could help in recovering a better market position. We focus on the linkages between farmers and the other food chain stakeholders through the perspective of Institutional Economics and Economics of Organization, in order to identify the key factors that determine the competitiveness of the supply chain’s product. The Lazio...

A Multi-Criteria Approach to Assessing PDOs/PGIs: An Italian Pilot Study AgEcon
Galli, Francesca; Carbone, Anna; Caswell, Julie A.; Sorrentino, Alessandro.
The paper contribute to the assessment of PDO/PGI schemes by building an approach to measuring the actual performance of the PDO/PGI products in relation to the objectives of the European Regulation 510/2006. This is done through a multi-criteria ex-post analysis that compares the performance of different PDO/PGI products with respect to multiple criteria. The research presented, based on a small sample of Pdo cheese products in Italy, can be considered a pilot study that develops a comparative evaluation of the performance of PDO cheeses: i) relative to the different objectives of the schemes, ii) by using a set of suitable and informative indicators that can help to evaluate the effectiveness of a wide number of PDOs/PGIs with respect to the regulation’s...

Consumers’ Buying Groups in the Short Food Chains: Alternatives for Trust AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Gaito, Marco; Senni, Saverio.
Food markets in affluent countries tend to be characterized by increasing complexity under several regards such as the organization of the productive chains, the process that leads to the formation of consumer’s preferences, the information/communication task and the building of trust among stakeholders. In particular, consumers are increasingly concerned about many credence attributes such as food safety, environmental concerns, the fairness of trade conditions, product origin and so forth. The paper focus on short chains and consumers’ buying groups (CBGs) seen as strategies to overcome the emerging difficulties that consumers face in collecting and processing information on credence attributes. The results of a field survey, based on e-mail interviews...

The European Policy for Food Quality and the Fischler’s Reform AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Sorrentino, Alessandro.
Fischler’s Reform of the Cap has introduced economic support to reinforce the range of instruments aimed at promoting food quality. Before the Reform, European Union market intervention for food quality was confined to the regulatory ground. The paper discusses the economic justifications for financial aid in the case of quality improvement and in the case of information circulation and provision of assurance to consumers. The possibility to add new Quality Schemes at the existing ones is criticized because of the information overcrowding. Furthermore, it is argued that a “race to the bottom” mechanism could be enforced as a result of the introduction of the possibility to settle Quality Schemes on a national basis. The paper also shows that the...

THE GENERATIONAL TURNOVER IN AGRICULTURE: THE AGEING DYNAMICS AND THE EU SUPPORT POLICIES TO YOUNG FARMERS AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Subioli, Giovanna.
The scarce presence of young farmers is commonly considered one of the main weak points in the competitiveness of European agriculture. Firstly, the lack of young farmers puts under risk the survival of the sector itself, given that the main effect of an inadequate rate of generational turnover is that the exit of farms from the sector for ageing is not balanced by the entry of new farms run by young farmers. Secondly, the competitiveness of the sector suffer from the lower investment and innovation propensity of elder farmers. For these reasons, and also to slow down the pace of depopulation in most remote rural areas, the EU has always support the entry of young entrepreneurs in the primary sector. With the more recent CAP reforms, the main effort in...
