SOME EMPIRICAL METHODS OF ESTIMATING ADVERTISING EFFECTS IN DEMAND SYSTEMS: AN APPLICATION TO DRIED FRUITS AgEcon
Green, Richard D.; Carman, Hoy F.; McManus, Kathleen.
Two different methods of incorporating advertising effects into Almost Ideal Demand Systems (AIDS) are presented. Both advertising schemes are designed to allow theoretical restrictions to hold globally rather than at particular sample points. The models are estimated for California figs, prunes, and raisins. Empirical results indicate that generic advertising effects for these three dried fruits are generally weak when compared to price and total expenditure effects. Estimated cross-commodity effects also are relatively small except for the negative effect of raisin advertising on the quantity of prunes demanded.

Economic Aspects of the California Nursery and Floral Industry, 2001–2009 AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
California’s nursery and floral industry is the largest in the United States with a farm value for product sales totaling $3.78 billion in 2009. When floral and nursery product sales are combined, the industry ranks second among all California agricultural products, following the dairy industry. Production is in 55 of California’s 58 counties, although 16 counties account for more than 87% of the value of production. San Diego County dominates the industry with annual sales over $1 billion in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Since its 2008 and 2009 sales increased while California’s statewide sales decreased, San Diego County increased its share of California sales from 26% in 2007 to 30.3% in 2009. California is the largest single retail market for lawn and garden...

Countercyclical Price Movements during Periods of Peak Demand: Evidence from Grocery Retail Price for Avocados AgEcon
Li, Lan; Carman, Hoy F.; Sexton, Richard J..
Using a unique micro dataset and advanced panel models, this study examines the effects of demand shocks on grocery retail price for avocados, a key Californian fresh produce commodity. Retail prices for avocados exhibited countercyclical movements over seasonal demand shocks for avocados associated with some holidays and events. Demand for avocados is shown to be higher during some holidays/events, e.g., Christmas/New Year, Super Bowl Sunday, and Cinco de Mayo. Super Bowl Sunday and Cinco de Mayo are identified as holidays/events associated with idiosyncratic demand peaks for avocados, but not associated with high aggregate consumer demand. Retail price and margin were significantly lower during some holidays/events associated with high demand for...

A MODEL OF NEW ZEALAND APPLE SUPPLY RESPONSE TO TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE AgEcon
Rae, Allan N.; Carman, Hoy F..
A supply response model for New Zealand apples is specified and equa•tions for new plantings, removals, yields and adoption of an innovation are estimated. The model expands on perennial crop models previously estimated by incorporating the time pattern of adoption of a planting innovation and formulation of a measure of yield expectations given technological change.

Marketing the Mediterranean Diet: Some Comments on Issues and Opportunities AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
"The Mediterranean Diet" is a commonly used term in the U.S. denoting healthful eating and a healthy lifestyle. It appears to be inspired by the traditional diets of two Mediterranean countries based on post-World War II studies conducted in Naples, Italy and Crete. Popularization of the Mediterranean diet is associated with increased demand for red wine and olive oil in the United States. As noted in the American Heart Association (AHA) website, there is no one "Mediterranean" diet. The Mediterranean diet, as typically presented, appears to be inspired by traditional diets in Southern Italy, Greece, and Spain. The AHA outlines the common characteristics of the Mediterranean dietary pattern. At least two non-profit organizations promote their version of a...

SYSTEMS ANALYSIS OF LIVESTOCK WASTE MANAGEMENT: A STUDY OF LARGE-SCALE DAIRYING AgEcon
Matulich, Scott C.; Carman, Hoy F.; Carter, Harold O..
The analytical approach to studying waste management is investigated here in the context of large scale dairying. The typical short-run approach that regards waste management as separable from primary production is contrasted with a longer-run systems approach in which waste management is regarded as an interdependent stage of production. Failure to consider interdependencies between waste management and agricultural production could compromise potential efficiencies in the overall system. Furthermore, cooperative waste treatment and disposal among livestock producers may contribute to greater efficiency and afford opportunities for resource conservation and recovery through waste utilization.

An Economic Evaluation of the Hass Avocado Promotion Order’s First Five Years AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F.; Li, Lan; Sexton, Richard J..
The U.S. avocado industry has evolved from an emphasis on seasonal domestic production of a mix of avocado varieties to year-round availability of domestic and imported Hass avocados. California avocado producers, who account for approximately 90% of U.S. avocado production and essentially all U.S. Hass avocado production, have funded promotional programs for avocados since 1961. With few imports of avocados prior to the early 1990s, the benefits from these demand-enhancing programs flowed directly to California producers. Imports of avocados into the United States have increased steadily since then, resulting in a free-rider problem that led ultimately to creation of the Hass Avocado Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 2000. This act established...

Discovering and Promoting Commodity Health Attributes: Programs and Issues AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
There is a growing consumer segment demanding healthy foods and diets, health and nutrition messages can expand food demand, and governments in the U.S. and EU, faced with increasing obesity and associated health outcomes, want consumers to have reliable information to choose healthy diets. California commodity organizations, charged with expanding the demand for almonds, avocados, strawberries and walnuts, are funding health and nutrition research as a means to discover a unique selling proposition for each product. Research and promotion effects are attracting interest by other commodity groups. Policy and regulatory issues abound.

Grocery Retailer Pricing Behavior for California Avocados with Implications for Industry Promotion Strategies AgEcon
Li, Lan; Carman, Hoy F.; Sexton, Richard J..
Rising concentration and consolidation of sales among large supermarket chains in the U.S. and other countries, due in part to a recent wave of mergers in food retailing, have made retailers' role in the food industry a topical issue. Using a unique micro dataset, this paper investigates retailer pricing issues for avocados, a key California specialty commodity, and analyzes the implications of retailer pricing behavior for the effectiveness of avocado industry advertising programs. The methodologies developed and the results achieved in this study should have broad applications across the produce sector, the food industry, and the grocery retail market. We find that retail prices for avocados are highly dispersed both spatially and temporarily. The...

CALIFORNIA MILK MARKETING MARGINS AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
This article uses monthly price data to estimate farm-retail price response equations for three California market areas. The results indicate that there is a strong direct relationship between retail and farm-level milk prices-retailers increase and decrease their prices equally in response to f.o.b. price increases and decreases. While the total retail response to farm price increases and decreases is equal, the timing of the adjustments is not. Farm price increases during a given month led to retail price increases during the same month while farm price decreases were not fully reflected in retail prices until the following month.

THE HASS AVOCADO PROMOTION AND RESEARCH ORDER: OFFSETTING PRICE IMPACTS FROM IMPORTS WITH ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F.; Rodriguez, Ana Maria.
Imported avocados, which accounted for less than 1.5 percent of total U.S. avocado supply during the 1970’s and 1980’s, increased their share to over 44 percent in 2002-03 and further increases are on the horizon. With inelastic demand, imports placed substantial pressure on domestic avocado prices, but demand increases due to generic advertising and promotion, higher consumer incomes and population growth helped offset increased avocado supplies and domestic prices were maintained. The new Hass Avocado Promotion and Research Order will continue to offset a portion of the price impacts of increased imports from Mexico, Chile and other suppliers.

THE DEMAND FOR NITROGEN, PHOSPHOROUS AND POTASH FERTILIZER NUTRIENTS IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
An economic model of the demand for fertilizer is specified and equations for nitrogen, phosphorous and potash are estimated for individual states in the western United States. The results are acceptable from both an economic and statistical viewpoint. The estimated price elasticity of demand demonstrates considerable variation between states and nutrients. The quantity of each nutrient sold per acre has increased with expected crop price increases and land price increases. In general, the sales response to shifts in the crop production function has been very elastic. Future shifts in fertilizer demand will be heavily dependent on changes in agricultural productivity.
