Cycle de développement d'une population intertidale de Nereis virens (Polychaeta Nereidae) de l'estuaire maritime du Saint-Laurent ArchiMer
Desrosiers, G; Caron, A; Olivier, M; Miron, G.
An intensive study was conducted from 1986 to 1988 to schematize the life history of the intertidal population of the annelid Nereis virens. Spawning occurred between late April and early June on the south shore of the Lower St. Lawrence estuary. Then, epitokous males leave the sediment and move towards female burrows, displaying heteronereid movements before releasing gametes. Femalesremain in their burrow and release oocytes which adhere to sediment surface where they will be fertilized. All mature individuals die after spawning. Larvae go through conspicuous changes during suprabenthic, pelagic and benthic development (monotrochophore, trochophore, metatrochophore, nectochaete). Settlement occurs in the upper intertidal zone and depends essentially on...

Comparaison démographique des populations de deux annélides polychètes seIon l'orientation des baies dans l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent ArchiMer
Caron, A; Desrosiers, G; Retiere, C; Hudier, E.
Variations in demographic parameters between intertidal populations of Nereis virens and Nephtys caeca were studied. These polychaetes are major component of the Macoma balthica community in the Lower St. Lawrence estuary (Quebec, Canada). We compared spatial distribution between differently oriented shores in a small geographic area. Our results revealed an interpopulation variability that appears to be dependent on hydrodynamical processes, edaphic parameters and biological interactions. In north and northeast oriented flats, the higher densities of young individuals of Nereis virens are found in the higher tidal levels where we observed larval recruitment and the highest organic matter contents. On the other hand, the lower densities of adult worms are...
