1. Species distribution modelling is an important and well-established tool for conservation planning and resource management. Modelling techniques based on central estimates of species responses to environmental factors do not always provide ecologically meaningful estimates of species-environment relationships and are being increasingly questioned. 2. Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer

The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. The Channel Programme: A Large-Scale Integrated Approach ArchiMer

The Channel programme is a collation of interlinked multidisciplinary projects supporting ecosystem-based management in the English Channel by integrating works carried out in the past thirty years including novel approaches to the spatial modelling of ecosystems. The Channel programme has required a coordination of efforts and expertise by both scientists and stakeholders to address the challenges of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and of its national implementations. The Channel programme has also consisted of harmonising information, regulations and habits in terms of ecosystem management in the English Channel.

Identifying these priority areas often involves using specific conservation-planning software. Eastern English Channel fish assemblages: measuring the structuring effect of habitats on distinct sub-communities ArchiMer

Multivariate and spatial analyses are used to identify and locate fish, cephalopod, and macrocrustacean species assemblages in the eastern English Channel from 1988 to 2004. Four sub-communities with varying diversity levels were identified in relation to depth, salinity, temperature, seabed shear stress, sediment type, and benthic community nature. From 1997 to 2004, some 25% of overall community structure variance could be related to the available environmental descriptors and 20% to persistent factors such as depth, seabed shear stress, sediment, and macro-invertebrate community type. Valuable marine habitats and living resources can be found in the Eastern English Channel and in 2003, a Franco-British Interreg IIIA project, ‘Eastern Channel Habitat Atlas for Marine Resource Management’ (CHARM), was initiated to support decision-making for management of essential fish habitats. Fish habitat corresponds to geographic areas within which ranges of environmental factors define the presence of a particular species. Striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus, Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea: growth and reproductive biology ArchiMer

Biological information is necessary for population structure assessment of economically important species. There are no known published studies on the age and reproduction of Mullus surmuletus in the north of the Bay of Biscay. The aim of this study was to estimate growth and reproductive biology of this species in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea from 1089 individuals, observed from February to December 2004. The length–weight relationship was described by the parameters: a = 3.284.10−6 and b = 3.243, being allometrically positive. lfremer carries out a yearly bottom trawl survey named Channel Ground Fish Survey (CGFS) in order to collect essential biological data on major exploited fish species in the Eastern Channel. These data are also provided to feed the indispensable historie series to the yearly assessment of resources. This report presents results of the CGFS surveys for 1997 and 1998, under two aspects: a multispecific approach of the biological assemblages and integrating an interannual analysis, then a monospecific analysis of 7 species of commercial interest, as whiting, pout, cod, red gurnard, plaice, black bream, red mullet.
