Erste Ergebnisse mit dem Einsatz von K-hydrogencarbonat in Südtirol Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Casera, Claudio; Lardschneider, Ewald.
In the EC at the moment only cupper and sulphur products are allowed to regulate a multiplicity of diseases in different vegetable crops. On the other hand it is well know that both have also negative side effects on beneficial organisms and the soil. Since many years researches are looking for alternatives to reduce and substitute the use of the mentioned products. Bicarbonates are substances which were pointes out for many years. They are present in nature and were used in the past in organic farming. Until now there was no registration for them in the EC as plant protection materials. There is a palpable possibility that it would change in future, what will open the possibility to apply for the introduction of potassium bicarbonate in annex 2B of the...

Was bringen die derzeit 'verfügbaren' Bioherbizide? Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Casera, Claudio; Lardschneider, Ewald.
Mainly in Anglo-Saxon countries (USA, New Zealand etc.) the market for organic agriculture inputs offers different natural substances for the use as bio-herbicides. The most important ingredients of these products are acetic acid, citric acid and clove-extracts (eugenol) in the case of post-emergence herbicides and corn-gluten in pre-emergence products. In a first screening test we compared the efficacy of these ingredients with some other natural substances. The most interesting ones were later compared in a field trial where the efficacy and the required dosages to clean a strip of about 40 cm under the trees were assessed in an ap-ple orchard. A few products showed interesting results (vinegar, pine oil), but the required dosage to keep the strip under...

Residues of copper and sulphur on fruits from organic orchards Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Matteazzi, Aldo; Casera, Claudio.
Copper und sulphur compounds are listed in annex 2b of the EC regulation 2091/92 and are used in organic orchards to control scab, mildew and sooty blotch also during summer time. In Italy, copper compounds have a waiting period from 20 days between last treatment and harvest, for sulphur compounds it differs and can reach until 30 days for lime sulphur. The trials carried out showed that using the recommended low dosages for copper and lime sulphur it should not be a problem to reduce these waiting periods. The residues remained clearly under the legal values, also when the samples where collected the same day of the treatment.

Results of 5 years of thinning trials with lime sulphur in South Tyrol Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
Thinning trials with lime sulphur were carried out for 5 years on different sites in South Tyrol. The sprays were applied during blossom to various varieties. During these trials different amounts of active ingredients, water volumes and numbers of treatments were used. Beside the thinning effect the influence on yield (kg/tree) and Fruit quality (average size of the Fruits, fruit-russetting, fruit-deformations) and the return bloom of the treated trees were evaluated. In several cases the use of lime sulphur gave satisfactory results (thinning effect >20%). The results showed a correlation with the amount of active ingredient, water volume, and number of treatments. In most of cases it was possible to increase the average Fruit size. The influence on...

Versuche zur Regulierung der Wühlmäuse im biologischen Obstbau Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lösch, Robert; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
In the organic apple orchards in South Tyrol different voles (Fam. Arvicolidae) are the cause of big damages on the trees. At present there isn't any product listed t the annex 2b of the EC- decree 2092/91 for organic agriculture, which could control the voles efficiently. Therefore it is quite difficult to control the voles in organic orchards. It is necessary to convince European and national authorities, associations and organs of control to allow the use of suitable products. Our trials showed that Silmurin, an extract of the red sea-onion (Uriginea marsitima) controls quite efficiently the field mouse (Microtus arvalis), but hasn't any effect against the earth vole (Arvicola terrestris). Against these voles we obtained good results with...

Pflanzenverträglichkeit von verschiedenen Schwefelpräparaten auf Braeburn bei Behandlungen mit dem Sprüher oder mit der Oberkronenberegnung Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Casera, Claudio; Lardschneider, Ewald.
The apple variety Braeburn is very popular among the organic apple growers in South Tyrol. Braeburn brings high and regular yields and good prices at the north European fruit and vegetable market. Braeburn is quite susceptible to scab and mildew. To regulate this latter disease the organic orchardists use mainly sulphur products. Braeburn however is sensitive to sulphur treatments. Mainly during summer at high tem-peratures the leaves of Braeburn treated with sulphur develop a yellowish colour and necrotic spots. A field-trial was carried out for 2 years to investigate which sulphur formulations and application techniques give less phytotoxic problems to leaves and fruits of the apple variety Braeburn. The results show only small dif-ferences between the...

Tree shading: an efficient method to control alternate bearing? Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
Conventional and integrated fruit growers, but not organic producers, have the possibility to use thinning agents (e.g. benzyl adenine), which allow crop regulation at a relatively late stage (10-16 mm fruit size). A few surveys have shown that by reducing net photosynthesis after blossom, June fruit drop increases. This could be an interesting new approach for organic apple orchards. Since 2003, different trials have been carried out at the Laimburg Research Station on the variety Golden Delicious rootstock M9 to devise a method for practical use by fruit growers. Unfortunately, there are still several constraints to the practical application of the shading method, not least because it does not sufficiently reduce alternate fruit bearing in the...

Thinning effect of lime sulphur applied during blossom with the overhead irrigation system in comparison to the sprayer Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
A large number of organic fruit-growers in South Tyrol regulate scab with scab-stop treatments using the overhead irrigation system. They use mainly lime sulphur, because it is particularly suitable for scab stop treatments. Treatments during blossom can also thin the flowers. The aim of the field-trials was to understand if lime sulphur applied with the overhead irrigation system gives the same thinning effect like the normal application with the sprayer. The results from the 2 years of trials show that there is no significant difference between the two application systems. Other factors like the influence of the different climatic parameters in each year play a more important role.

Degradation behaviour of potassium K-phosphite in apple trees Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Matteazzi, Aldo; Casera, Claudio.
Although potassium phosphite is not registered for organic fruit production in Europe, it has long been regarded as a potential alternative to sulphur- and copper-containing fungicides. In 2005/2006 a field trial was carried out to verify the presence of residues of phosphoric acid over time in apples after applications of potassium phosphite at different time-points. No residues were present on fruits if treatments were applied before flowering, whereas treatments after flowering, in the summer or in autumn resulted in comparable residue levels irrespective of the period of application. Residues were eveneven found in leaves and fruits of the following years, 2006 and 2007.

Effects of the period of application of K-phosphite on residues on apple fruits Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Matteazzi, Aldo; Casera, Claudio.
K-phosphite is very efficient against several plant diseases. Nevertheless at the moment there is no official registration in Europe as a plant protection material. In conventional winegrowing K-phosphite is used in different countries to regulate the main disease ‘Plasmopora viticola’ under the disguise of a foliar fertilizer or a plant strengthener. In organic apple production only a few fungicides to regulate scab are available. In addition, copper products are limited by European and national legislations. The discussion about Kphosphite for organic farming points always at the problem of synthetic residues on the edible parts of the vegetables. The aim of this field-trial carried out during the season of 2005 was to assess the residues on...

Vinasse: an alternative to lime sulphur for flower thinning? Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
Thinning trials with vinasse in comparison to lime sulphur were carried out for 4 years at different sites in South Tyrol. Beside the thinning effect, the influence on fruit quality, phytotoxic damage on the leaves and the return bloom of treated trees were evaluated. Depending on the dosage the vinasse treatments showed a good thinning effect, but russetting and leave damages were significantly higher in comparison to lime sulphur. Return bloom of vinasse treated trees was lower than of those treated with lime sulphur. In conclusion, vinasse treatments can not substitute lime sulphur for flower thinning in organic apple orchards.

Winter treatments against the woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum): products and timing of applications Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
In organic apple growing the woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) is still an unsolved problem. Various approaches to use beneficial insects were not really effective. Only winter treatments with mineral oils showed partial and fluctuating success. In 2006 and 2007 field trials were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of winter treatments to control woolly apple aphids. The efficacy of several products (different mineral oils, lime sulphur, and lime sulphur + mineral oil) was tested in comparison to an untreated control, and possible side effects on the population of predatory mites were investigated. The study furthermore aimed at establishing the best timing of the application against the target pest.
