Characterization of entomogen galls from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Urso-Guimarães,Maria Virginia; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides; Kataoka,Eric Yasuo; Koch,Ingrid.
ABSTRACT In this paper we performed a study of occurrence and characterization of entomogen galls from natural vegetation areas in Mato Grosso do Sul. We surveyed natural areas of four biomes from Mato Grosso do Sul State: Pantanal (Corumbá), Atlantic Forest (Bodoquena), Cerrado (Aquidauana), and Chaco (Porto Murtinho). We identified 186 morphotypes of galls in 115 host plant species from 35 families and 73 genera. The richest families were Fabaceae (N = 34), Sapindaceae (N = 24), Bignoniaceae (N = 17), and Myrtaceae (N = 15). Fifty morphotypes of insects (27%) were found in galls of 38 host plants, 78% of which belongs to Diptera, 10% to Hymenoptera, and the other 12% are divided among Hemiptera, Thysanoptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. In this study,...

Pathways affect vegetation structure and composition in the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Bruna Gonçalves da; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides; Koch,Ingrid; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Although impacts generated by gaps can affect vegetation, few studies have addressed these impacts in the Atlantic Forest. Our aim was to investigate the effects of pathways of varying widths on vegetation structure and composition, considering dispersal syndromes, diversity, life forms, successional categories and threatened and exotic species occurrence in the Atlantic Forest. We studied three pathways with widths of 2, 10 and 20 m, intersecting a protected area in southeastern Brazil. To assess edge effects, plots were established adjacent to paths (edge) and 35 m from the edge (neighborhood), and in a control area without pathways. Wider pathways (10 and 20 m) exhibited reduced tree height and diameter, high liana density, exotic species, and...

Analysis of floristic composition and structure as an aid to monitoring protected areas of dense rain forest in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Cardoso-Leite,Eliana; Podadera,Diego Sotto; Peres,Juliana Cristina; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides.
To study forest composition and structure, as well as to facilitate management plans and monitoring programs, we conducted a phytosociological survey in the PE Caverna do Diabo State Park and the Quilombos do Médio Ribeira Environmentally Protected Area, both located within the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We analyzed 20 plots of 400 m² each, including only individuals with a circumference at breast height > 15 cm. We employed cluster analysis and ordination (principal component analysis and correspondence analysis), including species data and abiotic data. We evaluated 1051 individuals, belonging to 155 species in 48 families. Of those 155, 18 were threatened species, 33 were endemic species, and 92 (59.4%) were secondary species. The overall Shannon...

Reestablishment, new records, and a key for the species of Aspidosperma (Apocynaceae) from the Brazilian Amazon Acta Botanica
Pereira,Andreza Stephanie de Souza; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides; Simões,André Olmos; Koch,Ingrid.
ABSTRACT As a result of systematic study of the Neotropical genus Aspidosperma (Apocynaceae), we reestablish the species A. centrale and A. duckei, and report A. steinbachii and A. tambopatense as new records for Brazil. We provide taxonomic descriptions of these species along with plates, distribution maps, and information on their conservation status, habitat and phenology. We also provide an identification key for all the species of Aspidosperma from the Brazilian Amazon.
