| The evolution of argentine landings, characteristics of trawl fleets, principal ports, landings per fleet and management unit (north and south of 41°S), areas and fishing seasons are described. Main results show a continuous increase of argentine hake landings as of 1987. Freezers, that operated in the Patagonian zone along the whole year, was the fleet that most contributed to said increase while the ice chilling fleet maintained its level of landings in the period considered. During the second and third quarter of 1996 and 1997, in the north management unit, the fleet fished in the argentine sector of the Common Fishing Zone and north of 41°S. | This report contains the objectives, data collected and results from a hake assessment survey carried out in the Argentine Sea between 34° and 46° S, during July and August 1994, on board of the R/Vs "Dr. E. L. Holmberg" and "Cap. Oca Balda". The main objectives of the survey were: 1) to estimate total biomass and total abundance per age class; 2) to study the size and age composition; 3) to define the maturity ogive per size and age; 4) to quantitatively determine cannibalism and predation indexes. | The activity of fishing fleets for hake Merluccius hubbsi south of 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic, is described. In order to establish the standard group of vessels, density indices derived from research cruises and ice-chilling fleets were related. Group four 1,400-1,800 HP related better to the abundance trend. Also, two series of indices associated to different fractions of the population were estimated: juveniles age 2) and adults age 3-5. Finally, a total catch per unit effort CPUE for the region south of 41°S, which showed a declining trend during the period considered 1991-1997, was calculated. |
