New opportunities for developing tomato varieties with enhanced carotenoid content Scientia Agricola
Leiva-Brondo,Miguel; Valcarcel,Mercedes; Martí,Raúl; Roselló,Salvador; Cebolla-Cornejo,Jaime.
ABSTRACT The development of varieties with a high content of antioxidant compounds, such as carotenoids, has become a major focus in the marketing of tomato. Several mutants have been used in the development of high pigment varieties, but the significant influence of the environment on carotenoid content and the presence of negative side effects in vegetative growth and yield have limited the success of these variants. Consequently, the identification of alternative sources of variation in the quest for high carotenoid content is ongoing. In this study, 12 accessions of Solanum lycopersicum (including the former var cerasiforme) and S. pimpinelifolium have been evaluated in three different environments: open field and glasshouse cultivation at two sites....

Traditional Eastern Spanish varieties of tomato Scientia Agricola
Cortés-Olmos,Carles; Valcárcel,José Vicente; Roselló,Josep; Díez,Maria José; Cebolla-Cornejo,Jaime.
Despite the importance of traditional varieties of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) as sources of variation in breeding programs and varieties targeted to high-price quality markets that value their exceptional organoleptic quality, little is known regarding the structure of these materials at the morphological level. In this study, a collection of 166 populations (137 of them during two years) of traditional varieties of tomato from the east coast of Spain has been characterized using 41 descriptors. The characterization revealed a considerable variation. The segregation observed in several populations (28 %) suggests that apart from the configuration as population varieties, the high variation present in these landraces may be partially due to possible...
