Rupture fragile des pièces minces et méthodes des équations intégrales ArchiMer
Chauchot, Pierre; Labeyrie, Jacques.
The study of the different theories of brittle fracture mechanics shows that the tenacity of a material can be used as a maximum value of the stress intensity factor of the opening mode of a crack to determine the risk of brittle fracture of a thin piece of a structure submitted to a tensile load. Among the different practical methods of determination of the stress intensity factor which are presented: Iterative methods, finite element method (FEM), boundary integral equation methods (BIEM), the last one seems to be the most convenient in a general three dimensional case. Their different formulations are developed. For a three dimensional case, a comparison between FEM and BIEM shows that the second one leads to a simpler surface meshing with far less...

Optimal design of stiffened composite underwater hulls ArchiMer
Messager, Tanguy; Chauchot, Pierre; Bigourdan, Benoit.
This numerical study deals with the stiffened composite underwater vessel design. The structures under investigation are laminated cylinders with rigid end-closures and inter-nal circumferential and longitudinal unidirectional composite stiffeners. Structural buckling induced by the high external hydrostatic pressure is considered as the major failure risk. An optimization design tool has been developed to obtain the reinforcement definition which maximizes the limit of stability: an analytical model of cylindrical composite shell buckling has been coupled to a genetic algorithm procedure. The numerical optimization tests carried out corroborate design tendencies validated previously by experiments.

Optimal laminations of thin underwater composite cylindrical vessels ArchiMer
Messager, Tanguy; Pyrz, Mariusz; Gineste, Bernard; Chauchot, Pierre.
This paper deals with the optimal design of deep submarine exploration housings and autonomous underwater vehicles. The structures under investigation are thin-walled laminated composite unstiffened vessels. Structural buckling failure due to the high external hydrostatic pressure is the dominant risk factor at exploitation conditions. The search of fiber orientations of the composite cylinders that maximize the stability limits is investigated. A genetic algorithm procedure coupled with an analytical model of shell buckling has been developed to determine numerically optimized stacking sequences. Characteristic lamination patterns have been obtained. FEM analyses have confirmed the corresponding significant increases of buckling pressures with respect to...

full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been...
