China Pear Value Chain: Implication for Smallholders AgEcon
Huang, Zuhui; Zhang, Jing; Chen, Kevin Z..
The objective of this paper is to describe different types of value chain, to capture value added activities of each chain, to discuss the organizational and institutional link in each value chain and its implications for the role of small farmers. We focus on two counties in Hebei and Zhejiang of China. Taking pear for example, analysis of value chain is conducted using data of representative samples of pear value chain. For each chain, value added activities, cost composition, profit distribution, organizational and institutional linkages are illustrated, and corresponding conclusions are indicated. After a systematic analysis of organizational and institutional linkage and value adding activities of every chain as well as cost-benefit analysis of...

Japanese Consumers’ Perceptions on and Willingness to Pay for Credence Attributes Associated with Canola Oil AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Chen, Kevin Z.; Yoshida, Kentaro.
In this study we found that Japanese consumers value the conventional health claim “low in saturated fat” more than the relatively newer claims, such as “high in oleic acid.” In addition, consumers do not prefer oil with genetically modified ingredients or oil that is not domestically produced, but they are willing to pay extra for “organic” or “functional food” features. We also found that the scope and source of information on these credence attributes may also affect consumers’ choices and willingness to pay and that the effects may not be completely consistent with what one would expect.

The Changing Pattern of China's Agricultural Trade AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z..
Economic reforms and rapid economic growth in the past twenty years have encouraged increased imports of foreign agricultural products into China. While becoming a potential market for agri-food exporters, China has also grown into a major competitor in international agri-food markets, particularly in Asia. As China is likely to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the foreseeable future, an accurate account of China’s agricultural trade pattern is particularly relevant and timely. The issue of whether or not China’s agricultural trade in the reform era has increasingly reflected its resource endowments is investigated in this paper using Statistics Canada trade data. The advantage of using Statistics Canada trade data is that Hong Kong export...

Consumers’ Purchasing Intentions for Vegetable Oil in the Presence of Generic or Specific Information on Genetic Modification AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Chen, Kevin Z..
In combination with the emergence of genetically modified (GM) food, there has been an urgent call for GM labeling to provide relevant information disclosure. Using data collected in Beijing, China, this study attempts to address the issue of whether different types of information may have distinct impacts on consumers’ stated purchasing decisions. Three types of information are used in this study: one is generic and the other two are linked with two important implications of GM technology—human health and the environment. Results verify that consumers’ purchasing decisions are affected by different types of information through their attitudes and personal characteristics. This finding has potential implications for establishing various GM marketing...

COMPETITIVENESS OF CANADIAN AGRI-FOOD EXPORTS AGAINST COMPETITORS IN ASIA: 1980-97 AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z.; Duan, Yufeng.
Asia is the second largest market for the Canadian agri-food exports after the United States market. The competition in Asia has become more intensive in recent years as the agri-food sector in developed nations such as Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States has increasingly relied on exports for growth because of their own slow-growing domestic food consumption. How did the performance of Canadian agri-food exports to Asia measure up to the performances of its main competitors? This research attempts to identify Canada's competitiveness in agri-food exports to Asia, relative to Canada's main competitors. The analysis is based on the 1980-97 trade data from the World Trade Analyzer (WTA), produced by the International Trade Division of...

REGULATION, MARKET POWER, AND ADVERTISING EFFECTIVENESS AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z.; Weerahewa, Jeevika.
Using the case of Canadian dairy industry, this paper investigates the farm level effectiveness of generic advertising in two vertically related markets under government regulation and oligopolistic power. Comparative static analysis indicates that an increase in advertising may either increase or decrease the farm level profit when the processing industry is oligopolistic. When advertising leads to an increase in the farm level profit under the oligopolistic processing industry, the size of this effect may be more than, less than, or the same as that under perfect competition. Specifications of the retail demand function play an important role in determining both the direction and magnitude of the effect of advertising on the farm level profit under...

Effects of Inclusive Village Level Public Agricultural Extension Service: Policy Reform Experiment in Western China AgEcon
Hu, Ruifa; Cai, Yaqing; Chen, Kevin Z.; Cui, Ynogwei; Huang, Jikun.
The top down public agricultural extension system in China and its early reforms during the 1990’s has left millions of farmers without access to extension services. An inclusive agricultural extension system was introduced in 2005 to better meet the diverse technology needs of small farmers. Three key features of the experiment are 1) inclusion of all farmers as target beneficiaries, 2) effective identification of farmers’ technology needs, and 3) establishment of an accountability system to provide better agricultural advisory services to small farmers. This paper describes design of the reform initiative and examines its effect on small farmers’ access to extension services. Based on the data randomly collected from 950 farmers in six counties from...

The Economics of Generic Income Stabalization Schemes AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z.; Meilke, Karl D.; Turvey, Calum G..
Generic income stabilization schemes, which resemble an actual NISA policy adopted recently in Canada, encourage farmers to set aside funds in high income year for use in low income years through a formal procedure. Their economic effects are investigated using the prudent farm household model. The effects of generic income stabilization schemes are hinged on the interaction between generic stabilization schemes and precautionary saving. It is also found that the designs of generic income stabilization schemes are fundamentally important for their potential supply effects. Conditions for characterizing various generic income stabilization schemes as either production neutral or decoupled are derived. Generic income stabilization scheme operated as a pure...

The Simple Analytics of Transferable Production Quota: Implications for the Marginal Cost of Ontario Milk Production AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z.; Meilke, Karl D..
Using the fact that separate markets exist for used and unused quota, this paper derives a formula to compute the marginal cost of the milk production using a competitive dynamic optimization model. It is showed that, under a perfect competitive quota market, the difference between unused quota and used quota prices gives an exact measure of rental value of quota and thus marginal cost. Policy risk is showed to have no effect on the calculation of equilibrium rental value of quota. The formula is modified to allow for the presence of a transfer assessment. It is showed that the effect of transfer assessment on the calculation of equilibrium rental value of quota depends on the elasticities of demand and supply for quota as well as the level of the transfer...

Symmetry Problem in the Linear AIDS Model: Further Results AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z..
This paper derives a set of linear and nonlinear restrictions to make a n-goods linear AIDS symmetric when all prices are allowed to vary. When prices are scaled by their means, the conventional restrictions are sufficient to make the linear AIDS symmetric at mean. This indicates an additional advantage of scaling prices at their means before estimation. Nevertheless, price-scaling does not produce a globally-symmetric linear AIDS. When prices are measured in natural units, additional nonlinear restrictions are needed to make the linear AIDS globally symmetric. These restrictions can be imposed with relative ease but convert the linear AIDS into the nonlinear one. The significance of the problem was illustrated using both the US and Canada meat consumption...

RELATIVE IMPORTANCE RANKINGS FOR PORK ATTRIBUTES BY ASIAN-ORIGIN CONSUMERS IN CALIFORNIA: APPLYING AN ORDERED PROBIT MODEL TO A CHOICE-BASED SAMPLE AgEcon
Chen, Kevin Z.; Ali, Murad; Veeman, Michele M.; Unterschultz, James R.; Le, Theresa.
This paper reports on a study examining the ranking of selected attributes of fresh pork by Asian-origin consumers in San Francisco, California. Freshness is ranked as the most important attribute, followed by the attributes of the color of meat, lowness in fat, and the whiteness of fat. The attributes of price, freedom from chemicals, and being USDA labelled were also ranked to be of importance. Empirical results from an ordered probit model, postulated to explain respondents' importance rankings of attributes, suggested that particular demographic and socio-economic characteristics of Asian-origin consumers influenced the importance rankings of selected pork attributes. The findings suggest that Asian-origin consumers should not be treated as a...
