A STUDY OF THE IMPACTS OF TARIFF REDUCTIONS ON AGRICULTURE, LIVESTOCK, AND FISHERY SECTORS IN TAIWAN - AN APPLICATION OF SINGLE-COUNTRY MULTIPLE-SECTOR CGE MODEL AgEcon
Sun, Chin-Hwa; Chiang, Fu-Sung; Lin, Cheng-Hong; Lin, Kuo-Jung.
This study used a single-country 50-sector CGE model to evaluate the impacts of 24.03%, 23.72%, and 33.11%, tariff reductions on agriculture, livestock, and fishery, respectively, after Taiwan's accession to the WTO. Results show that imports of agriculture, livestock, and fishery would increase by 52.98%, 86.48%, and 216.57%, respectively, and the domestic production of agriculture would experience the biggest reduction of 16.2%.

THE IMPACT OF INVENTORY ON TUNA PRICE: AN APPLICATION OF SCALING IN THE ROTTERDAM INVERSE DEMAND SYSTEM AgEcon
Chiang, Fu-Sung; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
This study adopted the scaling approach to examine the impacts of inventories on tuna auction prices in Japan using the Rotterdam inverse demand system. The inclusion of two inventory variables in the model only increases the number of parameters by two. Results indicate that frozen tunas are more likely to be close substitutes, fresh and frozen tunas of the same species are also likely to be substitutes, and inventory had significant impacts on auction prices.

A WELFARE ANALYSIS OF EL NINO FORECASTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE OF FISH MEAL - AN APPLICATION OF STOCHASTIC SPATIAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL AgEcon
Sun, Chin-Hwa; Chiang, Fu-Sung; Liu, Te-Shi; Chang, Ching-Cheng.
This study identifies the potential marine environment and economic effects of El Nino on anchovy, herring and sardine fisheries in the eastern equatorial Pacific. By considering the uncertainly of El Nino, this study used a stochastic spatial equilibrium model to evaluate the social welfare gains of 1997/98 El Nino forecasts in the international trade of fish-meal.

Consumer Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Foods in Emerging Markets: The Impact of Labeling in Taiwan AgEcon
Ganiere, Pierre; Chern, Wen S.; Hahn, David E.; Chiang, Fu-Sung.
In 2001, Taiwan enacted a law for genetically modified food (GM foods) labeling. Beginning January 1st 2003, food containing more than 5% of GM ingredients must be labeled. Taiwan imports most of its soybeans from the United States. In order to assess the effects of the new policy, a telephone survey was conducted in 2002. A total of 257 interviews were completed. A typology of consumers' attitudes towards GM foods is constructed from the use of a multiple correspondence analysis and a classification method. Four profiles are identified: proponents, 52%, moderate opponents, 32.5%, extreme opponents, 12.5%, and those with no opinion, 5.5%.
