Beliaeff, Benoit; Chim, Liet; Della Patrona, Luc; Goyard, Emmanuel; Herlin, Jose; Labreuche, Yannick; Walling, Emilie; Ansquer, Dominique; Brun, Pierre; Castex, Mathieu; Coatanea, Denis; Courties, Claude; De Lorgeril, Julien; Dufour, Robert; Frappier, Julie; Goarant, Cyrille; Huber, Matthias; Lemaire, Pierrette; Lemonnier, Hugues; Loubersac, Lionel; Le Roux, Frederique; Lucas, Ronan; Patrois, Jacques; Peignon, Jean-marie; Pham, Dominique; Ramage, Yannick; Soulard, Benoit; Vic, Marlene; Vourey, Elodie; Wabete, Nelly.
New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government...

Rearing effect of biofloc on antioxidant and antimicrobial transcriptional response in Litopenaeus stylirostris shrimp facing an experimental sub-lethal hydrogen peroxide stress ArchiMer
Cardona, Emilie; Saulnier, Denis; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Chim, Liet; Gueguen, Yannick.
This study compares the antioxidant and antimicrobial transcriptional expression of blue shrimps reared according to two different systems, BioFloc Technology (BFT) and Clear sea Water (CW) and their differential responses when facing an experimental sublethal hydrogen peroxide stress. After 30 days of rearing, juvenile shrimps were exposed to H2O2 stress at a concentration of 30 ppm during 6 hours. The oxidative stress caused by H2O2 was examined in the digestive glands of the shrimp, in which antioxidant enzyme (AOE) and antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gene expression were analysed by quantitative real-time PCR. Results showed that rearing conditions did not affect the expression of genes encoding AOEs or AMPs. However, H2O2 stress induced a differential...

Oxidative stress studies applied to the farmed shrimp Litopenaus stylirostris in new caledonia ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Castex, Mathieu; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly.
The study of the antioxidant status and oxidative stress in shrimp L. stylirostris make it possible to assess risk factors (temperature, shrimp size, pathogen, ..) associated with shrimp farming. From a practical view, this research should lead to zootechnical and/or nutritional recommendations to improve the antioxidant status of the shrimp during their growout stage in farm.

Morphogenese sexuelle et regulation hormonale de l'activite genitale chez la crevette Penaeus japonicus en elevage ArchiMer
Laubier, A; Chim, Liet; Payen, G.
A study of the sexual physiology of penaeid prawns essentially based upon Penaeus japonicus is performed in both descriptive and experimental ways, using the controlled rearings conducted at the Centre Oceanologique de Bretagne (CNEXO-COB), Brest. Sexual morphogenesis is described. This preliminary study enables definition of simple criteria for determination of the stage of genital development of the prawns during their growth. The neuroendocrine control of the genital system development is studied, using eyestalks ablations and male eyestalks extracts injection in prawns belonging to the same sex. A biochemical criterion as a test of the effect of eyestalks extract injections on the genital system development is discussed. The evolution of the specific...

Effect of dietary probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici on antioxidant defences and oxidative stress status of shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris ArchiMer
Castex, Mathieu; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Chim, Liet.
in this study we evaluated the effects of the probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici MA18/5M on shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris (also called Penaeus stylirostris), first on antioxidant defences and secondly on the oxidative stress status in the shrimps' haemolymph and digestive gland. We conducted two experiments with the same protocol in which shrimps were fed two diets for three weeks: a control diet and a probiotic diet containing 1 g of live P. acidilactici MA18/5M kg(-1). In the first experiment, the shrimps were found to be healthy over the trial period; no mortalities and non-detectable signs of infection were recorded. These resulted in high final survival rates (above 90% in both treatments). On the other hand, during the second trial, carried out at...

Live preys in shrimp culture: nutritional and sanitary considerations on the use of Artemia in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Pham, Dominique; Wabete, Nelly; Maillez, Jean-rene; Broutoi, Francis; Chim, Liet.
In aquaculture, Artemia nauplii are commonly used as live prey; and represent 40 % of the total aquaculture feed demands in the early stages. However, the production of Brine shrimp is very unstable from one year to another and in the late 90’s, only 20 % of the world aquaculture need was covered. An insufficient offer leads to higher prices of the Artemia cysts and consequently, the price of shrimp juveniles from hatchery. In New Caledonia, marine aquaculture is mainly based on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. From Zoea 3 to 10 days old post-larvae (P10), the shrimp are mainly fed with live preys. Eleven kilos of Artemia cyst are necessary for producing one million of P10. From a sanitary point of view, Artemia can be a virus carrier and Vibrio...

Relative contribution of natural productivity and compound feed to tissue growth in blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) reared in biofloc: Assessment by C and N stable isotope ratios and effect on key digestive enzymes ArchiMer
Cardona, Emilie; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Geffroy, Claire; Richard, Pierre; Saulnier, Denis; Gueguen, Yannick; Guillou, Gael; Chim, Liet.
The aim of this study was to assess the relative contribution of natural productivity and compound food to the growth of the juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris reared in a biofloc system. Two experiments were carried out based on the same protocol with three treatments: clear water with experimental diet (CW), biofloc with experimental diet (BF) and biofloc unfed (BU). Shrimp survival was significantly higher in biofloc rearing than in CW rearing. The contribution of the biofloc to shrimp diet was estimated through measurement of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in shrimp and food sources. Different isotopic compositions between feeds were obtained by feeding natural productivity with a mixture rich in fish meal and the shrimps with a...

Probiotic P-acidilactici application in shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris culture subject to vibriosis in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Castex, Mathieu; Chim, Liet; Pham, Dominique; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Schmidely, P; Mariojouls, C.
We studied the effects of a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici (strain MA 18/5M, CNCM), as a dietary probiotic on growth performance and some nutritional and microbiological aspects of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Experimental shrimp culture was carried out over 10 weeks, using floating cages of 14 m(2) each set in earthen ponds, in a New Caledonia farm affected by "Summer syndrome", a septicaemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo. The experiment design testing probiotic-coated pellets against control was replicated in two earthen ponds. High mortalities, characteristic of Summer syndrome, were observed during the first 2 weeks of the trial. The probiotic improved production in the treated cages from both ponds with increases...

Manufacture of "fresh/wet" aquaculture feeds based on by-catches, fish by-products and algae ArchiMer
Doudard, Karine; Chim, Liet; Arhaliass, Abdellah; Przybyla, Cyrille; Baron, Regis.
This work focuses on available bio resources transformation such as by-catches or fish by-products and marine plants (seaweed and microalgae) as ren circuit . The objective is to make this production as autonomous and sustainable as possible and fitted to the idea of circular economy. Thanks to previous projects, it seems that by-catches could be a plentiful source of proteins for fish. The challenge associated with this type of aquaculture formulations relies on the ability to incorporate abundant resources readily available and the significant reduction of certain energy‐consuming steps (such as drying) in order to minimize the environmental impact of a fish feed production. The adequacy of this strategy (fresh raw material and wet feed) with a...

Evaluation of floating cages as an experimental tool for marine shrimp culture studies under practical earthen pond condition ArchiMer
Castex, Mathieu; Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Pham, Dominique.
Scientific and technical studies carried out under semi-intensive farming conditions, with large earthen ponds (Fig 1), to assess the effects of treatments on zootechnical results are highly complex due to the many logistical, economic and/or experimental constraints involved. In our study, we evaluated the use of floatingcages (Paquotte et al., 1998) immersed in earthen ponds as an experimental tool in order to design future powerful and economical expe-riments under semi-intensive farming conditions.

Combined effect of temperature and salinity on osmoregulation of juvenile and subadult Penaeus stylirostris ArchiMer
Lemaire, Pierrette; Bernard, Eric; Martinez-paz, J; Chim, Liet.
In New Caledonia, the "syndrome 93," which results in mass mortalities of farmed shrimp Penaeus stylirostris, occurs during the transitional and the cold seasons. The transitional season is characterized by an important fall in the average water temperature from 28 to 19 degreesC in 2 weeks. Besides this marked temperature fall, there are also nyctemeral temperature changes of up to 7 degreesC in 12 h. The cold season is characterized by an average water temperature of 19 degreesC with extreme lows of 14 degreesC. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperature and its variations on the osmoregulatory capacity of juvenile (7-10 g average weight) and subadult (25 g average weight) shrimps subjected to conditions of different salinity....

Feed intake, molt frequency, tissue growth, feed efficiency and energy budget during a molt cycle of mud crab juveniles, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), fed on different practical diets with graded levels of soy protein concentrate as main source of protein ArchiMer
Nguyen, Ngoc Thi Bich; Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wantiez, Laurent.
There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. For this purpose, 54 individually housed crabs were allocated to five dietary treatments (n = 10 or 11). The crabs were fed ad libitum, for 81 days with the allocated diets. The apparent digestibilities of dry mater, crude protein and energy were high (96.2-97.3%),...
