Organic food and health – status and future perspectives Organic Eprints
Lauridsen, Charlotte; Jørgensen, Henry; Halekoh, Ulrich; Christensen, Lars Porskjær.
The effect of three iso-energetic and iso-nitrogeneous diets composed of ingredients originating from three different cultivation systems (“Organic”, low input of fertilizer without pesticides; “Minimally fertilised”, low input of fertilizer and high input of pesticides, “Conventional”, high input of fertilizer and high input of pesticides) was investigated with respect to several physiological responses and biomarkers of health using a rat model. The diets were optimized according to the nutritional requirements of rats, except for a high content of fat. The diets consisted of equal proportions of potatoes, carrots, peas, green kale, apples, and rapeseed oil, which were grown according to three different cultivation systems. Even though most of the...

Organic food and health - status and perspectives Organic Eprints
Lauridsen, Charlotte; Jørgensen, Henry; Halekoh, Ulrich; Christensen, Lars Porskjær.
In a recent study it was investigated, through a well-controlled animal feeding experiment, whether conventional and organic food products showed differences in animal physiology of a type and magnitude that could indicate that organic products would affect humans differently. The primary, but still tentative conclusion from this study was that the most significant effects on rats was observed on health aspects that have rarely been assessed in prior studies: Immune status, sleep/activity pattern, accumulation of adipose tissue, liver function, and vitamin E status, while a large numbers of markers of “traditional” nutritional value showed no differences. Although the results of the present study could not directly be applied to organic and conventional...

Rats show differences in some biomarkers of health when eating diets based on ingredients produced with three different cultivation strategies Organic Eprints
Lauridsen, Charlotte; Yong, Chen; Halekoh, Ulrich; Bügel, Susanne; Brandt, Kirsten; Christensen, Lars Porskjær; Jørgensen, Henry.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify health-related biomarkers affected by different growth conditions of plant foods. Rats were fed balanced diets composed of vegetables and rapeseed oil from three different cultivation systems (‘LIminusP’, low fertiliser input, without pesticides; ‘LIplusP’, low fertiliser input, with pesticides; and ‘HIplusP’, high fertiliser input, with pesticides) chosen to cover a broad range of management options, rather than representing actual food production systems. RESULTS: Rats fed LIminusP and LIplusP had a higher serum IgG concentration compared to rats fed HIplusP and 14% less adipose tissue. Rats fed LIminusP showed less movement during the day than the other treatments, with no differences during the...
