The analysis of the Pecten maximus larval productions carried out between 1982 and 1986 in the framework of the repopulating program of the roadsted of Brest demonstrated the existence of a number of factors affecting larval growth in hatcheries: - Larval growth shows important seasonal fluctuations. It is minimal in February-March (3 to 4 µm.D-1) and maximal in June (6 to 8 µm.D-1). The growth of larvae from conditioned spawners does not differ from that of larvae from mature genitors collected in their natural habitat. Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. Calcein staining of calcified structures in pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera and the effect of food resource level on shell growth ArchiMer

Marine mollusc shell growth has been widely measured using fluorochrome marking. In order to test the efficiency and reliability of calcein staining on P. margaritifera shells and pearls, the present study examined two administration methods, different concentrations and several immersion times.Immersion in a 150 mg.L-1 calcein solution for 12 h to 24 h appeared to be the best method for marking P. margaritifera shells. For pearl marking, injection of a 200 mg.L-1 calcein solution into the pearl pouch was the optimal method. Etude sur la reproduction de la coquille Saint-Jacques en milieu artificiel ArchiMer

Avec environ 20 000 tonnes de production annuelle, la pêche de la coquille Saint-Jacques Pecten maximus occupait jusqu'en 1978 une place importante dans les apports des pêcheries françaises. En raison de la surexploitation de stock, les captures en Baie de Saint Brieuc ont chuté de 12 000 tonnes en 1972 à environ 4 000 tonnes. En Rade de Brest qui avant 1963 produisait 1 000 à 2 000 tonnes par an, les débarquements stagnent au-dessous de 100 tonnes. Afin d'augmenter le recrutement en Baie de Saint Brieuc, un captage de naissain inspiré des méthodes japonaises a été mis au point. Production artificielle de naissain de coquille Saint-Jacques Pecten maximus (L.) résultats obtenus en 1982 en Rade de Brest ArchiMer

Des travaux expérimentaux menés depuis 1977 en rade de Brest ont permis la mise au point d'une méthode de production de naissain de coquille Saint-Jacques dont la fiabilité a été démontrée en 1982. La filière d'élevage comprend quatre phases nécessitant chacune la mise en ouvre de techniques originales sur des sites distincts. La première étape réalisée en écloserie (température 17°C - eau de mer filtrée à 1µ) produit des larves pédiveligères de 250µ. Ces larves reprises dans une nurserie (eau de mer brute filtre à 125µ) donnent des postlarves de 1 à 3 mm. Les deux dernières phases se passent directement en mer ; un premier stade permet de produire des animaux de 10 mm environ qui sont ensuite portés à une taille de 30 mm et plus. La production de naissain de Pecten maximus destiné au repeuplement de la rade de Brest a nécessité le déclenchement de la ponte de plusieurs centaines d'individus au cours des années 1980 à 1984. L'analyse de ces données permet de faire quelques constatations sur le cycle sexuel de la coquille Saint-Jacques dans cette zone. - Le cycle sexuel de la population est très étalé dans le temps. Effect of food conditioning on gonadic activity in the oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer

Preliminary experiments allowed defining basic requirements of Pinctada margaritifera for somatic and gonadic growth in controlled conditions. This study was continued by observation of the gametogenesis at a cellular level. In April/May 2008, 125 oysters were conditioned for 30 days in 25 tubular tanks (30 L). Water was renewed 4 times/hour. A mixed (v:v) diet of Isochrysis galbana (T-Iso) and Chaetoceros gracilis was supplied continuously. Au cours de cette deuxième année du programme « Coquille Saint-Jacques en Méditerranée » , a été achevée la mise au point des conteneurs d'élevage utilisables en mer ouverte dans le Golfe du Lion. Chaque conteneur en acier galvanisé mesure 2,5 m x 2,5 m x 1,7 m et pèse à vide 500 kg. Il supporte 120 poches d'élevage de type poches ostréicoles. Ces conteneurs sont adaptés aux nouvelles barges myticoles. Pour l'espèce Atlantique Pecten maximus de bons résultats ont été obtenus lors du prégrossissement qui consiste à amener les juvéniles d'une taille de 1 à 2 mm à une taille de 30 à 40 mm en 8 à 10 mois. Due to the lack of regulation allowing commercial exploitation of abalone (Haliotis tuberculata), French research was directed towards a half extensive aquaculture starting from hatchery juveniles and using the natural production of macrophyte algue of rocky intertidal areas. Spat is produced in the Argenton hatchery (Western Brittany) with an original high density technique (4 000 juveniles of 8 months/m2). About 55 000 juveniles are produced each year and immersed in habitats of 3 types.

Effect of dietary protein level on growth and energy utilization by Litopenaeus stylirostris under laboratory conditions ArchiMer

A study was conducted using a bioenergetics approach to generate information on energy requirement and feed utilization of Litopenaeus stylirostris. Animals (initial mean weight 21 +/- 1 g were fed ad libitum six experimental diets, ranging from 25 to 58% crude protein (CP), for 50 days. Weight gain increased from 21 to 30 g with increasing dietary protein level. Survival rates averaged 80%. Basal metabolism (HeE) and heat increment of feeding (HiE) were monitored using respirometry. In atoll lagoons of French Polynesia, growth and reproduction of pearl oysters are mainly driven by plankton concentration. However, the actual diet of black-lip pearl oysters P. margaritifera in these lagoons is poorly known. To fill this gap, we used the flow through chamber method to measure clearance rates of P. margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia). In seawater, the osmoregulatory capacity (hyporegulation) is a useful tool to compare the physiological condition of shrimp exposed to various stressors. By keeping some shrimp in cages at different locations of a single pond heterogeneous in terms of sediment quality, it was possible, using osmotic pressure (OP), to identify some locations where the stress was maximum and some others where it was minimum.
