A simple bioeconomic model was specified and estimated for the central subpopulation of the northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax). Net population growth was described by a power function and harvest by the U. S. reduction fleet was modelled by an exponential production function. When incorporated into a bioeconomic model they allowed the derivation of two explicit functions, Y = Ö(X) and Y = Ø(X) which could be used to depict the bioeconomic optimum. The roots of Ö(X) have important economic interpretations and can be used to characterize the economic status of the fishery. The creation of parks and preserves in less developed countries is seen as an important step in preserving biodiversity and genetic information (Dixon and Sherman 1990). The establishment of a park or preserve, however, is often seen as a threat by rural residents if they are denied access to areas where hunting, gathering or small scale agricultural provided them with food, fuel or marketable products. In a series of papers Norgaard (1981, 1984 and 1985) advocates development strategies that promote coevolution of socioeconomic and ecological systems. In an attempt to address the negative ecological impacts of habitat fragmentation, wildlife corridors have been proposed as a way to connect areas of biological significance. In this paper, a model to maximize the amount of suitable wildlife habitat in a fully connected parcel network linking core habitat areas subject to a budget constraint is introduced. The standard economic framework of maximizing habitat benefits subject to a budget constraint that we employ in this paper is a divergence from other recently proposed models that focus only on minimizing the cost of a single parcel-wide corridor. There is now strong scientific evidence that several species of baleen whale and possibly the sperm whale, have recovered to levels that would support commercial harvest. The stock of fin whales (Balaenoptera physatus) off the eastern coast of Iceland and the minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the Northeast Atlantic, off the coast of Japan and in the Southern Ocean are prime candidates for commercial harvest. A stock pollutant is a residual waste that can accumulate or degrade over time. Aldicarb was a pesticide used by farmers growing fruit and vegetables. Potato growers on eastern Long Island, New York, used aldicarb from 1975 to 1979 to control the Colorado potato beetle and the golden nematode. In August of 1979 aldicarb residues were detected in well water, and subsequent testing found more than 2,000 wells with concentrations in excess of the New York State health standard of 7 parts per billion (ppb). Shortages of wood for burning and construction have begun to create serious environmental problems in sub-Saharan Africa. Kenya is of particular interest both because of its high population pressure and its commitment to au active reforestation movement. This paper examines the contribution that the fast-growing species, Leucaena leucocephala, can make in this effort. A simple statistical model was used to determine the soil and climatic factors that affect its growth; these results are then compared with existing conditions in Kenya. Estimated coefficients for growth and estimated output prices were used to derive a function relating the present value of net revenue to rotation length.
